FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

A. Research Findings

1. Goals of Teaching Speaking Skill through Animation Video

Before entering to the classroom, Mrs. Novi as a teacher prepared a lesson plan that contains the intended process of teaching and learning. In this preparation, teacher also prepared the goal of teaching. As she said at interview,

“In this meeting, by using animation video as a media, my teaching goals are to make students are able to mention the type of command and request expressions and also able to differentiate both expressions clearly. Then, I have to really make sure that after the classroom activity, my students know those expression, understand when and where they must use the expression”.61

It is supported by group interview done by the researcher after the class with students. Noval, one of students said:

“Mrs. Novi said that we must be able to mention a kind of expression of command and request and able to differ them in this meeting.”62.

Kamila added:

“Yes, that’s right. Mrs. Novi also said that we must focus to the explanation and animation video in order to understand the difference between both expressions well”.63

Researcher concluded from interviews that there were two goals of teaching in meeting 1 which discussed about command and request, those are: a) students

are able to mention the type of command and request clearly, b) students are able to differentiate both command and request expression well.

This data is also supported by class observation. Researcher noted that before teacher started the explanation of command and request expression, she said salam and greeted the students by asking their condition at that time. She then mentioned two goals of learning for ‘command and request’ material, those are; student could mention the type of command and request expressions clearly and differ both expressions well after classroom activities.64

Researcher also found the goals of teaching mentioned in the lesson plan was arranged by teacher to guide her teaching and learning process at classroom meeting of 28th January 2022. It was mentioned that after the process of teaching and learning, the students are intended to be able to: a) mention the expressions of command and request and respond to the expression by English, b) differentiate the expression of command and request and it use.65

In the next meeting for ‘command and request’ material, teacher added the goal with the ability of student to practice those expressions in the class with partner. The teacher said:

“In this meeting, my teaching goals are almost same with my last meeting. But, now I add one more goal, I will more focus on the ability of student to practice the expressions discussed in the last meeting.

That’s why in this meeting the animation video is all about the example of conversation. I will ask my students to look at the video and imitate the way of uttering words on that video. It because I think my student need some practices in order to make me sure that they really pronounce the words well and shows a good face expression when they talk as well”66.

It was supported by the interview to the students of class five after classroom activities. Rizky said:

“We remember that in this meeting we must be able to practice the expression of command and request. Because we have learned the way to utter those expression by watching the animation video.67

Nazil, one of student strengthened:

“But, not only practice, we must imitate the way speaker talk in the video. We must able to imitate the pronunciation and fluency”

From the interviews, researcher concluded that in meeting 2 of ‘command and request’ the teacher added one more goals toward her last goals of teaching.

Then, there were three goals of teaching in this meeting, those are: a) students are able to mention the expressions of command and request and respond to the expression by English clearly, b) students are able to differentiate the expression of command and request and it use well, and c) students are able to practice the expressions with their friends fluently.

Moreover, in the class, researcher also observed that students take a much practice of command and request expressions. The teacher often paused the animation video and asked students to repeat the sentences that showed on animation video. Students sometimes succeed to utter the words well in one time trial but sometimes they also had to try more than one to pronounce the words correctly.68

This data was strengthened by review of lesson plan of 4th February 2022, it was mentioned in lesson plan that after participating teaching and learning process, students are hoped to be able to: a) mention the expressions of command and request and respond to the expressions by English, b) differentiate the expression of command and request and it use, and c) students are able to practice the expressions with their friends.69

In the other occasion, teacher explained the goals of teaching for the meeting discussed about material of shopping. Teacher also stated. She explained:

“I want my students are able not only to mention the expressions of shopping clearly, but also to practice them in a real conversation, fluently and well-pronounced. Using animation video, my students also have to know the different use of shopping expressions. When they enter to the store to buy something, they have to know which expression they must use, which one is used to ask the availability of merchandise, which one is used to ask the cost, etc. By watching animation video, I’m sure that my students could imagine the use of the expressions in their real life. And to reach those all, I will encourage them to do a lot of practices in the class with the partner”.70

Researcher concluded that in the meeting of shopping material the teacher focused on three goals of teaching, those are: a) students are able to mention the expressions of shopping clearly, b) students are able to differ the use of some shopping expressions, c) students are able to practice the expressions fluently in a real conversation.

The interview was supported by class observation. Before explaining the material of shopping, researcher found that teacher explained the goals of learning

to the students. She mentioned that after the process of teaching and learning activity, the students have to be able to mention the expressions of shopping and it uses, and able to practice a kind of expression with the right pronunciation in a real conversation.71

In addition, the goals were also written in the lesson plan that after participating the class, students are hoped to be able to: a) mention a kind of shopping expressions, b) Differ the use of some shopping expressions, c) Practice the expressions well in a real shopping conversation72.

Based on the interviews, observations and documents review, researcher concluded that the teaching goals in the implementation of teaching speaking skill through animation video at fifth grade of MI Tarbiyatul Islam were: 1) students are able to mention a kind of expressions explained in a speaking class clearly, 2) students are able to differ some expressions used in some different context well, 3) students are able to practice the expressions fluently in the class with their partner and in the real life with people around them as well.
