3. Methods of Teaching Speaking Skill through Animation Video

Moreover, The lesson plan also viewed that the learning sources used in teaching speaking skill through animation video were book entitled ‘Buku Bahasa Inggris Kelas V semester 2’ and internet source. The teaching media was animation video which also contain the material discussed in the class.

Based on the data gathered from interviews, observations and documents review, it was concluded that the material of teaching speaking skill through animation video are; (1) command and request and (2) shopping. The discussion of vocabulary and grammar was adopted from book entitled ‘Buku Bahasa Inggris Kelas V Semester 2’ that matched with main competency and basic competency of class five elementary school, especially for English subject. The way to utter the words and to speak fluently was adapted from animation video.

An additional explanation is also adapted by teacher from internet source.

don’t understand my explanation. If they still don’t understand, it means that I have to repeat the explanation and ask them anymore”.82

From the interview, it can be concluded that the method of teaching speaking skill through animation video was question and answer method. Teacher chose question and answer method because she thought that it is easier for her to analyze students understanding by using this method.

It was supported by observation where in classroom activities teacher explained the material and questioned the students at same time. She asked the students one by one to know how far they listen to and understand the material.

Researcher noted that students didn’t just sit down looking at the teacher and listen to teachers’ explanation. Students and teacher became active oftentimes because they have much opportunity in the class discussion with question and answer method.83

In the time allocation of classroom activities, researcher found in the field that teacher divided the meeting into three time allocation; opening section, whilst teaching, and closing activity. In opening section teacher started the class with salam, continued to the review of last discussed material and linked it to the new material that will be discussed, so that she told students about what is going to be learned and mentioned the goals of teaching. Teacher said:

“As usual, I open the class with salam, bring my students to the memory of last material and then link the last material with a new one before telling them the goals of learning, but sometimes I forgot to tell the goals of learning and directly started my explanation”84.

This was supported by the interview to the students, they said:

“Mrs. Novi always open the class with salam, then ask about our condition, so she ask about the last discussed material before continue to the new material”.85

Nazil also argued:

“She sometimes told us the teaching goal, but sometimes she didn’t”

It was concluded from interview that in opening section, teacher said salam and told the goals of teaching before explaining the material.

In observation, researcher also noted that after entering the class, teacher directly greeted the students with salam, made sure that all students are in the good condition to participate in the class activity, she then check students’

attendance, continued to the review of the last material, stated what would be discussed, mentioned teaching goals and started a discussion of new material. 86

Teacher then took 30 minutes in whilst teaching activity to transfer the material. She ordered the students to open their guidelines book at some pages and read them, next she viewed an animation video through LCD, she asked students to; focus on the animation videos, listening to the speaker voices, looking at the way speaker talked in the video. Lastly, teacher explained the material in the book combining with what students can learn from video.

In the next step teacher let students ask any questions they didn’t understand. The questions must be related to the material they have read from the book or seen from the video. After that, teacher explained anymore what are being not understood by the students. After making sure that all questions are already answered, teacher moved to the next practice section.

In practice section, teacher asked students to remember a kind of expression found in the book and animation video. She let students mention the expressions as much as they can. She then responded them with ‘right’ or ‘wrong’

expressions. After that, teacher gave them a conversation related to the material and let them to practice it with the partner in front of their friends. This section made a class atmosphere is alive because of the acts of students while practicing the conversation, some of them showed a good practice invites an applause and some others are full of shy invites laughter.

Lastly, teacher ended the class with closing activity. In this part, both teacher and student made a conclusion of the day discussion. Teacher told the important points of teaching and learning process at that day, gave a simple motivation, then closed the class with salam.

This data was strengthened by document review of lesson plan, it was written that the classroom activities were divided into three section which have different time allocation, those are: 10 minutes of opening section, 40 minutes whilst-teaching activities, and 10 minutes of closing section.87

From the interviews, observations, and documents review, researcher concluded that the methods used in teaching speaking skill through animation video was question and answer method where teacher and students were active in the class. This method encouraged teacher and students to do a lot of communication in classroom activities. The time allocation in every meeting was 60 minutes including 10 minutes of opening section, 40 minutes of whilst teaching, and 10 minutes remaining used for closing activity. The main media used was animation video showed on LCD.
