Consolidated Operating Profit increased by 13.88%, while Current Year Profit of the Company in 2017 increased significantly by 20.74%, which were from IDR 211,15 Billions in 2016 to IDR 254,95 Billions in 2017. This was mainly caused by very significant drop of Interest Expenses which was from IDR 66,24 Billions in 2016 to IDR 27,54 Billions in 2017, or a decrease of (58.42)%. The very significant drop of Interest Expenses, apart from the decrease of interest rate, was mainly because of an extremely lower amount of Bank Loan as compared to the previous year. The substantial decrease of Bank Loan demonstrated the success of Management in negotiating the extension of credit term for Trade Payables payment with major principals. With the current arrangement, the Working Capital required by the Company also considerably decreased.
In 2017 there was Other Comprehensive Income (Loss) – After Tax in amount of IDR (4.09) Billions. Therefore Comprehensive Net Profit of the Company became IDR 250.87 Billions or an increase by 19.08% from IDR 210,67 Billions in the previous year. After subtracting it with Comprehensive Net Profit of Non-Controlling Interest of IDR 10,60 Billions, Comprehensive Net Profit of Owners of Parent Entity became IDR 240.27 Billions or an increase of 20.59% from IDR 199.24 Billions in 2016.
NOPAT (Net Operating Profit After Tax) turun sebesar (4.25)%, sedangkan CoC (Cost of Capital) juga turun sedikit yaitu sebesar (0.54)%. Sebetulnya Cost of Debt After Tax atau Beban Bunga Setelah Pajak turun cukup drastis, yaitu dari Rp 56,56 Milyar di tahun 2016 menjadi hanya Rp 21,56 Milyar di tahun 2017. Peningkatan sangat besar justru terjadi di Cost of Equity, yaitu dari Rp 74,08 Milyar di tahun 2016 menjadi Rp 108,37 Milyar di tahun 2017, sehingga efek penurunan Cost of Debt ter-eliminir, bahkan Economic Profit yang dihasilkan menjadi tergerus karenanya.
Kenaikan jumlah Cost of Equity ini terjadi karena adanya kenaikan tarif menjadi 11.0%.
Tabel perbandingan NOPAT dan CoC adalah sbb:

Cost of Equity 108.37 74.08 46.29%
Cost of Capital (CoC) 129.93 130.64 -0.55%
Economic Profit Konsolidasian
Consolidated Economic Profit 116.18 126.41 -8.09%
Perlu dijelaskan bahwa untuk menghasilkan perhitungan NOPAT atau Laba Bersih Operasi Setelah Pajak diatas, komponen Beban Usaha yang diperhitungkan hanyalah Beban Usaha murni diluar kelompok Beban Usaha Lain- lain Non-finansial. Sedangkan CoC atau Biaya Modal adalah kombinasi dari Beban Bunga (Cost of Debt) dan Beban Modal Sendiri (Cost of Equity).
Unit usaha Educational Products (EP) mencatat adanya kenaikan pencapaian Economic Profit yang cukup signifikan dibandingkan dengan tahun sebelumnya, sedangkan unit usaha Consumer Products (CP) dan Blue Gas Indonesia (BGI) walaupun tetap memberikan kontribusi positif terhadap pencapaian Economic Profit Perseroan, pencapaiannya di tahun 2017 menurun dari tahun sebelumnya. Pencapaian Economic Profit unit usaha Manufacturing Services (MS) di tahun ini bukan saja menurun malah jadi negatif.

Internally, the Company has adopted Economic Profit system based on EVA (Economic Value Added) concept since 2005 for measuring profitability of the Company.
In accordance with the Company’s internal calculation, the Economic Profit generated in 2017 was IDR 116,18 Billions, a decrease of IDR (10.23) Billions or (8.09)% lower than the previous year which was IDR 126.41 Billions in 2016; NOPAT (Net Operating Profit After Tax) decreased by (4.25)%, while CoC (Cost of Capital) increased by (0.54)%. As a matter of fact, Cost of Debt After Tax or Interest Expenses After Tax decreased substantially from IDR 56.56 Billions in 2016 to only IDR 21.56 Billions in 2017. While, in contrary, Cost of Equity increased significantly from only IDR 74.08 in the previous year 2016 to IDR 108.37 in 2017, consequently the impact of Cost of Debt reduction was neutralized by the increase of Cost of Equity, furthermore the Economic Profit was eroded. The substantial increase of Cost of Equity was caused by the hike of CoE rate to 11.0%
