Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is still a serious problem. It can be seen from the high incidence rate, especially in tropical and subtropical countries. Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever is a disease that is caused by Flavivirus. It is spread by Aedes aegypti. The existence of Aedes aegypti larvae can be affected by some factors, like human behavior, environment (temperature, climate, weather, humidity, ventilation), and Container (color, material, and position). In this study, researcher focused on Container factor especially from its color, dark and bright, as one of existence factor of Aedes aegypti larvae.

Container is a place for saving our water that is used in our daily life, where this container can be used Aedes aegypti for hatching their eggs and growing up as larvae and mosquito which is a vector of DHF.

This study investigated the differences between the mean number of Aedes aegypti larvae in the dark container and bright container. The method that is used in this study is observational analytic with cross- sectional design. Samples in this study are taken from 100 respondents’ houses in the Tambak Cemandi Village, Sedati, Sidoarjo, on may until august 2016.

The result of this study showed a significant value in the differences between the mean number of Aedes aegypti larvae in the dark container and bright container, where p= 0.001 ( p < α; α = 0,05 ). So, there was significant difference between the mean number of Aedes aegypti larvae in the dark container and bright container in Tambak Cemandi Village, Sedati, Sidoarjo.

Background: Increasing consumption of high-fat foods may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The influence of oxygenation by using hyperbaric oxygen has activity that induces the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can increase monocyte polarization to M2 macrophage, activation of ATGL (adipose triglyceride lipase) which produces fatty acids as ligands of PPAR in order to oxidize fatty acids, LDL can occur.

Purpose: This research aimed to find out whether hyperbaric oxygen effect with duration of 3x30 minute with O2 100% and pressure of 2,4 ATA (absolute atmosphere) for 5 days on HDL, LDL, total cholesterol and triglyceride wistar white rat (Rattus norvegicus) which induced a high-fat diet.

Methods: The study was carried out in an experimental post-test only control group of three groups of mice. 1) group of standard fed animals, 2) group fed standard and induced high fat diet for 6 days, 3) group fed standard and induced high fat diet and hyperbaric oxygen therapy 2,4 ATA for 3x30 minutes interspersed within 5 minutes at each session for 6 days. On the 7th day examination of HDL, LDL, total cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Result: For HDL level, Kruskal-Wallis test, obtained significance value p = 0,882 (p <0,05) which mean there is no significant difference mean of HDL cholesterol level of blood between the three treatment groups. For total cholesterol, One Way Anova parametric statistic test showed p = 0.007 <α which showed that hyperbaric oxygen therapy had significant effect on total cholesterol among the three treatment groups. For LDL level, Kruskal-Wallis test showed no significance value, p = 0,115 (p <0,05) which mean there was no difference of mean of LDL blood level between treatment group. For triglycerides, the crucified walls test shows no significance of p-value = 0.400 ie> α (0.05). The data show that descriptively average triglyceride levels are lower than the control group, but not statistically significant.

Background: Free radical due to a hyperlipidemic condition can raise the level of Malondialdehyde (MDA) and trigger memory deficits. The extract of Cyperus rotundus rhizome can act as an antioxidant which has been shown to prevent memory deficits and lowering MDA level.

Objective: Investigate the effectiveness of Cyperus rotundus rhizome extract to prevent memory deficits through lowering the MDA level.

Method: This experimental study used post-test control group design, that was conducted for 36 days in 25 male wistar rats. The samples were divided into five groups: negative control with normal diet, positive control with hyperlipidemic diet, and three groups with hyperlipidemic+extract of Cyperus rotundus rhizome diet with the dosages of 125 mg/kgBW/day, 250 mg/kgBW/day, 500 mg/kgBW/day.

On the 36th day all wistar rats were tested with Morris water maze and terminated to get the intracardiac blood for MDA level test.

Research result: Statistical analysis showed that the extract of Cyperus rotundus rhizome significantly lowered the time needed to reach the platform of Morris water maze test (p<0.001) and MDA level (p<0.001). Linear regression test showed that 85% of decrease time needed to reach the platform and 83% of MDA level reduction were caused by the extract of Cyperus rotundus rhizome.

Conclusion: The results show that the extract of Cyperus rotundus rhizome effectively act as an antioxidant to prevent memory deficits.

Background. Indonesia has abundant varieties of sea creatures those beneficial for medicinal or food.

One of them is golden sea cucumber (Stichopus horrens). Studies have shown that Stichopus Horrens has amino acid, omega3 fatty acid, saponin and collagen which has the effect as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and speed up healing of burned injury.

Purpose. This test had been done to proof the effect of Stichopus horrens gel extract applied topically to stage IIA burned injury from the level of mononuclear inflammatory cells in male rats (Rattus norvegicus) wistar strain back .

Methods. This test was using Post Test Only Control Group Design with simple random sampling technique. Sample included 16 white male (Rattus norvegicus) Wistar strain those further divide into 2 groups, Control group and Intervention group (using stichopus horrens gel extract applied topically).

This test had been done in Animal Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Faculty of Widya Mandala Catholic University.

Results. Analysis data using independent t-test showed decrease of mononuclear cells in intervention group (p < 0.05) with level of significance 0.05 (one-tailed) results t-value > t-table (3.480 > 1.761)

Conclusions. There is a decrease of mononuclear inflammatory cells in white male (Rattus norvegicus) Wistar strain with stage IIA burned injury.

APPROACH TO A JOURNAL ARTICLE

Ronald Pratama Adiwinoto

Faculty of Medicine, Hang Tuah University Email: [email protected]

Background: Reading journal articles is one of many important academic activities for medical students, clinicians and researchers to keep them updated with ever changing medical knowledge. With a vast array of medical journal articles published each year, it is essential to develop a systematic approach to find and read a journal article.

Methods: The systematic approach to find and read a journal article is described as the following: the reader should first enter the appropriate keywords relevant to the reader’s interest, only then the reader begin by reading the title, abstract and conclusions first. If a decision is made to read the whole article, the key sections of the article can be appraised in a systematic manner effectively and efficiently. That systematic manner was elaborated in this paper.

Conclusions: The reader should be able to read and appraise a journal article if a systematic approach is used in a simple and rational manner. The reader should hone this particular reading skill by familiarizing oneself to read every scientific manuscript using this systematic approach.
