CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD
E. Technique of Analyzing the Data
The analysis sheets above are used by the researcher to analyze reading materials
for modeling provided in the English textbook for grade X Senior High School related to
criteria of good texts for English as Foreign Language (EFL) students.

Totally Lacking: appearance causes misunderstand about the information in the text
To determine the quality of the reading text in the forms of the fulfillment of the criteria related to both aspects, the researcher used the following scoring criteria.
Iin order to avoid the difficulties in determining the quality of the reading texts since one indicator, sometimes, has more than one sub variables and the score will be the sub variables’ average score in the form of decimal number. Yusuf (2005:305) states that the score may become interval data because of score given to each sub variable, rounding off system used, and basic reason used in classification. The researcher used scoring criteria which has a bit elaboration to obtain appropriate quality. The scoring criteria can be presented as follows:
1. If the text achieves the requirement of 3.51 – 4, it is qualified as excellent.
2. If the text achieves the requirement of 2.51 – 3.50, it is qualified as good.
3. If the text achieves the requirement of 1.51 – 2.50, it is qualified as adequate.
4. If the text achieves the requirement of 0.51 – 1.50, it is qualified as weak.
5. If the text achieves the requirement of < 0.50, it is qualified as totally lacking.
Based on the criteria of the data analysis in the table 1 – 10, the researcher analyzed and judged the text in terms of their fulfillment toward each descriptor. If a text fulfills each criterion, it is scored 4 and it does not fulfill it, it is scored 0 as the following example:
Identification:
- Name of the book : Linked to the World - Publisher : Yudhistira
- Indicator : Genre
- Variable : To what extent does the text match the genre for grade X?
- Sub Variable : Is the text in the form of genres for Grade X Senior High School?
Judgment
After analyzing each text, it is concluded that the genre of the text can be easily recognized and the data can be filled in the following checklist as an instrument.

1. Is the text in the form of genres for Grade X Senior High School?
√ 4
Based on the analysis, all the texts provided in this textbook as text modeling in
reading activity of written cycle fulfill the indicator. The description of judgment is
indicated in the following table:

In the table 3.13 above, it can be seen the score of each text of the textbook.
There is only one sub variable in this indicator and each text gets 4 in fulfilling the indicator. Based on the data, all the text can be qualified with excellent related to genre.
When an indicator has more than one sub variable the score is the number of scores for all sub variables is divided by the numbers of sub variable as the following example:
Identification:
- Name of the book : Linked to the World - Publisher : Yudhistira
- Indicator : Exploitability
- Variable : To what extent does the text match the objectives of the reading lesson?
- Sub Variables : 1. Do the aims and objectives of the text correspond to the goals of reading lesson?
2. Do the aims and objectives of the text correspond to those
delineated in the syllabus?
Each text is analyzed to know the quality possessed and then the result of analysis is filled in the following table:
