INTRODUCTION

Problem Identification

The students have a low motivation to learn English especially in reading because they assume that they need a long time to read the text. The students have a low ability to grasp the main idea and information from the text. The students are not interested in the learning method that the teacher uses in the reading subject.

Objectives and Benefits of the Study

  • Benefits of the Study

The use of Numbered Heads Together (NHT) strategy can increase the learning activity of students in tenth grade MAN 1 Lampung Timur. The researcher asks the students to discuss the answer in group work. f) The researcher calls one number. The researcher gives reinforcement to the students. h) The researcher and the students draw conclusions together.

In this research, the researcher gives the students two tests which are pre-test and post-test to determine the improvement in the student's reading comprehension ability. In this research, the researcher observes the use of Numbered Heads Together (NHT) strategy and students' activities in the learning process to know how the learning process is going. The classroom action research material used the Numbered Heads Together (NHT) strategy to increase students' reading comprehension.

Therefore, the researcher used the Numbered Heads Together (NHT) strategy to enhance students' reading comprehension skills. The researcher also planned to give assessment to measure students' mastery of the given materials. The researcher started the lesson by praying, greeting, checking the attendance list and asking about the condition of the students.

The students' test score in the post test 1 was better than the test in the pretest before. There was an increase in students' pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test 2 scores in cycle I and cycle II. As a result, by implementing the Numbered Heads Together (NHT) strategy, the reading comprehension skills of the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Lampung Timur can be increased.

As a result, Numbered Heads Together (NHT) strategy could increase students' activities in teaching learning process at tenth grade in MAN 1 Lampung Timur.

THEORETICAL REVIEW

Aspects of Reading Comprehension Abilities

Levels of Reading Comprehension Abilities

-reader, those readers who are able to recognize the writing symbol, words and expressions used in some texts that contain general topics about their shared experiences, such as basic classroom objects, colors, numbers, story times and dialogues with an understanding at . minimal other than simple memorized material. Intermediate Readers Those readers who are able to find the main content, key ideas and some supporting details in narrative text types on familiar topics such as simple instructions, general information, meeting arrangements, well with some common misconceptions at best. Level reader refers to the reader who has the ability to understand main ideas, most supporting details of the abstract and factual topics with known context in description, narrative and non-technical prose which includes newspaper reports, directions, academic texts, current events , press, politics, economy, with an improvement in the understanding of detail, but still not completely accurate. level reader refers to those readers who have the ability to understand most material on concrete and abstract topics, get the main idea and most supporting details, and understand new vocabulary in context through contextual guessing strategies.

It is assumed by Smith that it refers to the following:10 1) the literal level, at this level the basic facts are understood. For example, knowing that the lady's name is Miss Chow; she lives in an apartment on the 10th floor; .. her neighbors are noisy; she has previously complained to the owner. The last level is 4) The creative level, in this level the reader can take information or ideas from what has been read and develop new ideas from them.

Concept of Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Strategy

  • Principle of Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Strategy

It can be a powerful way to encourage students to investigate and problem-solve.”13 It can be argued that Numbered Heads Together in cooperative classrooms empowers students to be an independent learner. It means that Numbered Heads Together (NHT) is a learning strategy with a number of procedures in a small group. 14 Munawaroh, "The Comparative Study of the Cooperative Learning Model of Numbered Heads Together (NHT) and Student Team Achievement Division (CITY) on Learning Performance in Social Subjects" IOSR-JRME, Vol.5/Jan-Feb.

Of course, in a collaborative classroom, students and teachers work together to achieve goals. Kagan states that there are four (4) steps to the Numbered Heads Together strategy in the classroom as follows:17. Numbered Heads Together (NHT) can motivate students as this strategy has a sense of competition and fun for students.

Heads Counted Together (NHT) reduces dominance by smart students so that equal student participation is evident. It can improve students' academic achievement and apply to almost all subject areas. There is a possibility that students reject the group that is shared by the teacher.

If the students from another group cheat, the teacher will punish the group by not giving marks to the group even though the group's answer is correct. 21.

Using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Strategy to Teach

Helping the English teacher to ask the students to form a group as the teacher wants. 2) There is a possibility for students to hear or cheat from another group. For example, when reading a story, students may be tasked with analyzing one of the characters. They can be asked questions such as, "Which character traits are directly stated and which are implied by the author?" and "What information do you get from the character's speech and actions?" etc.

RESULT OF THE RESEARCH

Description of the Research

  • Cycle I
  • Cycle II

In relation to the problem in class and the analysis, the researcher made a lesson plan. In this phase, the condition of the class was effective because the collaborator gave the researcher to ensure that of the students. Then the researcher asked the students to find difficult words and asked her.

The researcher started the lesson by praying, greeting, checking the attendance list and asking the students. In the observation, the researcher presented two meetings in the first cycle of the lesson to find the information of the text in the reading. In the second meeting, the researcher explained the heads-counted-together (NHT) strategy before giving the task.

The researcher and staff prepared the lesson plan and the observation sheet of the students' activities, identified the problem and found the causes of the problem in the first and last learning activity. Before the meeting started, before the students had gathered with their groups, the researcher narrated an untitled text. The researcher then divided the students into several groups, each consisting of five students.

Then the researcher discussed and explained to all the students about the reading comprehension problem that the students often face because of the effective strategy;.

Interpretation

From the increase in each cycle, it can be concluded that using the Head Counted Together (NHT) strategy can increase students. It means that students can achieve the target, the target is 80% that students can get score ≥75. There was an increase in students scoring up to standard from pre-test to post-test 1 and from post-test 1 to post-test 2.

Based on the explanation above, the researcher concluded that the research was successful because the students' result score had achieved the indicator of success which was 80% with MMC was 75. Based on the above data, it could be inferred that the students felt comfortable and active in following the teaching and learning process. Based on the graphic above, it could be concluded that there was an increase in the students' learning activity during the study period came by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) strategy to increase the students'.

Therefore, this research was declared complete and could be stopped in cycle II because the results of the students' activities achieved the indicator of success which was 80%. The average of the students' reading score at the tenth grade of MAN 1 Lampung Timur in pre-test was 62, post-test 1 was 73 and in post-test 2 was 77. The percentage of the students' activities at the tenth grade of MAN 1 Lampung Timur in cycle I was 58% and there was an increase in cycle II, it was 81.72%.

It is suggested to the teacher to use numbered heads together (NHT) as the teaching learning strategy because it can increase the students'.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

Suggestion

We suggest the English teacher to include Numbered Heads Together (NHT) in the teaching process. Teachers should creatively use NHT in teaching, especially in reading lessons, to engage students to be active in the learning process. Other researchers who want to develop this study are suggested to include another skill in English learning, such as speaking, listening or writing, and include different subjects and also different text.
