The purpose of this research is to improve speaking ability after using pair work technique among the eleventh graders in SMA Negeri 1 Trimurjo Central Lampung. This bachelor's thesis entitled "Improving speaking ability through pair work technique among the eleventh graders of SMA Negeri 1 Trimurjo Central Lampung", the research is presented to fulfill one of the requirements for the degree of Sarjana Pendidikan (S.Pd) in English department.

The table below is the students' test result from the preliminary survey of students' speaking ability in the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Trimurjo. From the above explanation, the researcher uses the pair work technique to solve the speaking problems of students in the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Trimurjo.

THEORETICAL REVIEW

Definition of Speaking

Based on the description above, the researcher can conclude that speaking is an activity of saying something or activity that earlier shared or expressed ideas and feelings of someone using verbal symbols that have meaning and can be understood by the people talking inside. Speaking is very important in everyday interaction, because it is used to share information with other people, deliver ideas and express ourselves, and the first impression of a person is based on his/her ability to present their ideas or express. of many people.

Types of Speaking

Planned Unplanned Interpersonal Transactions In monologues, one speaker uses spoken language for any time, such as in speeches, lectures, reading, news broadcasts, and the like. The listener must process long stretches of speech without interruption; the stream of speech will continue whether the hearer understands it or not.7 While dialogues involve two or more speakers and can be subdivided into those exchanges that promote social relations (interpersonal) and those for which the purpose is to convey proportional or factual information (transactional).

Problem of Speaking

According to Thonbury, speech is produced utterance by utterance in response to word by word, and utterance of utterance production or the person we are talking to.8 So speech production is the essential thing in speaking English because it will explain about characteristic of the form of the spoken language. According to Segalowitz, the term fluency is the ability in the second language to produce or understand utterances smoothly, quickly and accurately.15 While Matthews stated that fluency refers to speaking smoothly with as few hesitations and repetitions.16 Then the researcher concludes that fluency is the accuracy of the speech, the rhythm, the tempo to be more easily understood by the listener.

Teaching Speaking

Students can learn to speak on a topic of their own choice or a topic set by the teacher. Based on the above statement, students can practice speaking in their peers before speaking in a larger group.

The Measurement of Speaking Ability

Mostly effective use of vocabulary for the task with some examples of inappropriateness. Some mistakes in the use of sentence structures and grammatical forms, but they don't get in the way of understanding.

According to the definition above, the researcher concludes that pair work is an activity of students in the classroom that can be used to make students more active in the learning process because they work together. Pair work means that students work together in pairs to complete the task and achieve its goal. There are many pair work activities that can be used in the speaking class.

Harmer stated that students in pairs can practice language together, study a text, research language or participate in informational activities. Conversation is the first form of pair work because students communicate or share opinions, ideas and feelings with their friends. Pair work is a technique that was used in class, this technique was chosen as pair work can increase students' motivation and concentration.

This means that working in pairs gives students maximum opportunity in terms of time spent talking. Working in pairs creates a safer and more positive atmosphere in the classroom. By applying pair work to teaching speaking, it gives students more time to speak and allows them to use a greater variety of English to express what they really want to communicate. 28.

In this research, the researcher observed the students with the aim of knowing the problem in the learning process. A pre-test was given to the students to know the students' speaking ability before the treatment by the researcher and gave a post-test to know the students' speaking ability after they were taught by using pair work technique. In this case, the researcher will compare the scores of the students before and after using pair work technique.

It was to know how far the students speaking ability by using pair work technique. d. In this research, the researcher observed the students with the aim of knowing the problem in the learning process. A pre-test was given to the students to know the students' speaking ability before the treatment by the researcher and gave a post-test to know the students' speaking ability after they were taught by using pair work technique.

In this case, the researcher would compare the students' results before and after using the pair work technique. Using the technique of working in pairs, it was necessary to find out how far the students' speaking skills are.

Data Collecting Technique

The students can express their feeling or ideas or give information to their friends, and then the researcher evaluates the students' ability. There were five aspects to evaluate the students' speaking ability, such as: Fluency, Pronunciation, Vocabulary, Grammatical Accuracy and interaction strategies. Post-test was conducted to know the progress of the students' speaking ability using pair work technique after the treatments.

The teachers asked the students to perform their dialogue in front of the class to assess the students' speaking ability. Documentation is a method used to obtain information from written sources or documents such as books, journals, regulations, meeting notes and daily reports. 33. The researcher used this method to obtain data on the history of the school, total teachers, employed officials and students in SMA Negeri 1 Trimurjo Central Lampung.

To collect the data more accurately, the researcher used field notes to make it easy to analyze the data.

By looking at the result of pre-test and post-test, the student score was found to be higher than the average in pre-. The researcher was a teacher and the English teacher was a staff member who observed the students' activities during the learning process. During the learning process, there were four activities that used to know the activity of the students in the classroom.

From the result of pre-test and post-test 1, we knew that there was an improvement from the students' result score. Although there was an improvement in the students' speaking ability, cycle 1 was not yet successful, because only 11 students (39.29%) passed post-test 1. The researcher started the meeting by praying and checking the students' attendance list. , and ask the students' condition.

Based on the result above, it can be seen that the students' average score in post-test 2 was 77.18. In learning process there were four indicators that were used to know the students' activities as in the learning process before.

According to the result above, it could be deduced that pair work technique could improve the students' speaking ability, because there was an improvement from the average in post-test 1 67.64 became 77.18 in post-test 2. From the students' result ' score in pre-test and post-test 1, there was an improvement in the students' performance scores. After analyzing the students' scores in post-test 1, the researcher had to conduct the next cycle.

From the results of the students' results in posttest 2, it was possible to conclude that the results have improved. Based on the results of pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test 2, it was known that there was a positive significant improvement of the students. Based on the graph above, we can conclude that the technique of working in pairs could improve students' speaking skills.

According to the results of using the technique of working in pairs in speaking ability, it was possible to conclude that there was an improvement of the students. In the 1st cycle, the students' activities in the learning process could not reach 70% of the learning process success indicator.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

Suggestion

Ini menganalisis fungsi sosial, struktur teks dan unsur kebahasaan dalam hal mengungkapkan pendapat dan pikiran sesuai dengan konteks penggunaannya. Menyusun teks lisan dan tulis untuk mengungkapkan dan menanggapi ungkapan pendapat dan pikiran, dengan memperhatikan fungsi sosial, struktur teks, dan unsur kebahasaan, secara benar dan sesuai konteks. Dengan bimbingan dan arahan guru, siswa menentukan ciri-ciri interaksi mengungkapkan pendapat dan pikiran (fungsi sosial, struktur teks, dan unsur kebahasaan).

Siswa membandingkan ungkapan mengungkapkan pendapat dan pemikiran yang dipelajari dengan yang ada di berbagai sumber lain. Siswa menuliskan masalah menggunakan bahasa Inggris untuk mengungkapkan pendapat dan pemikirannya dalam jurnal pembelajaran (learning diary). Menerapkan fungsi sosial, struktur teks, dan unsur kebahasaan teks interaksi transaksional lisan dan tulis yang melibatkan memberi dan meminta informasi tentang pendapat dan pemikiran, tergantung pada konteks penggunaannya.

Menghasilkan teks interaksi transaksional pendek dan sederhana, lisan dan tulis, termasuk tindakan memberi dan mencari informasi tentang pendapat dan buah pikiran, dengan memperhatikan fungsi sosial, struktur teks, dan unsur kebahasaan yang benar dan sesuai konteks. Mengidentifikasi fungsi sosial, struktur teks, dan unsur kebahasaan teks interaksi interpersonal lisan dan tulis yang melibatkan pemberian dan pencarian informasi tentang pendapat dan pemikiran, sesuai dengan konteks penggunaannya. Penyajian fungsi sosial, struktur teks, dan unsur kebahasaan teks interaksi interpersonal lisan dan tulis, yang meliputi tindakan memberi dan mencari informasi tentang pendapat dan pikiran, sesuai dengan konteks penggunaannya.
