Northern Phalarope. — On
the26thofSeptem-ber, 1890, whilepursuinga
wounded
duck,a bird ofthisspecies flewpastme
and alighted not a dozen pacesaway,showing
nomore
fear or sus- picionthan woulda Least Sandpiper.My
shotgun missed firetwice be- fore I at last secured it, in a condition unfortunately quite unfit for ]M-eservation.The
only note it uttered wasthe chirp, which,more
or lessmodified, characterizes nearly all the Shore-birds.Tringa bairdii. Baird's Sandpiper.

specimens have been taken thus far, one onMay

— A very interesting collectionof birds made
by
Mr.James
E. Benedict, of the NationalMuseum,
on the coast of South
Carolina (near Charleston), inJanuary,1S81, contains several specimens
ofthe first-named of the above mentioned species and one eacli of the
othertwo—
allperfectly typical. The
Cisiotlioriis is so exceedingly dif-
ferent from C. paliistris, in bothplumage
and proportions,judgingfroiTi
thesespecimensalone,thatIcould notdoubttheir specific distinctness.
