Mapping the socio-religious spaces of a kampong: A case of Kauman Semarang
(Conference Paper) (Open Access),
Department of Architecture, Engineering Faculty, Diponegoro University, Indonesia
Abstract
Cultural identity and creativity in diversity rise up as dominant issues in international development agenda. Identity is an important element of a nation to show who the citizens really are in the era of globalization. The existence of an urban kampong is often marginalized due to 'bad' infrastructure and social conditions. But a kampong as the residence of common people in the city center is also recognized as a successful place in reflecting human values.
Kauman is a kampong where people live around the city's great mosque and demonstrate characters of a devout Muslim community in the Javanese traditional city. In Semarang Kauman is a pioneer of a city characterized by the social life of non-elite class, coastal Islamic culture, and trading activities. The role as a spiritual-religious area has been continually attached to Kauman since the Mataram Kingdom's era to the present despite different improvisation of developments. At this moment Kauman seems to experience the effects of Johar Market burning in . As a kampong with stories of the history of the city's development, Kauman has many local cultures that potentially become a city identity. However, the condition of infrastructure and socio-cultural aspect appears to be in degradation due to aging and modernization-capitalization pressure from its surroundings. This research aims to explore the spatial phenomenon influenced by socio-religious aspect that makes Kauman able to survive with the identity of a 'religious spiritual' place. This research employed ethnographic methods. The results showed that socio-religious values influenced community's everyday life and encouraged the community participation in the making of place. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Beyond sustainability: reconsidering the healing qualities of the built environment

Abstract
Sustainability, resilience and other concepts have recently emerged as a response to the most urgent problems of our time including the ones of the built environment. Throughout the last century little attention if any at all was paid to the adaptability of the built environment to nature and the needs of human beings. The ideology that shaped Modernism was hostile to the psychological qualities of the built environment and instead cared about shaping new aesthetics and advanced technology in building industry. The ascent of Modernism during the last century among other things was associated with dissemination of certain building doctrines and dogmas that neglected environmental issues and played their role in discrediting traditional ways of building architectural structures as well as traditional urbanism. As a result the built environment lost its adaptability to natural environment as well as its human qualities.
Thus a new approach to building and rethinking of the legacy of Modernism as well as current practices is urgently needed. Though the rise of environmental consciousness gave an impetus to reconsider present quality of built environment, more steps in this direction are required. Reconsideration of architectural and urban design practices could and should be triggered by the new findings in psychology, neuroscience as well as re-reading of pioneering work in architectural and urban theory done by Christopher Alexander and his co-workers and more recently revisited by Nikos Salingaros. Reasoning that the development of technology in itself can solve the problems of the built environment is deeply flawed and thus should be transcended.

IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, Volume 213, The 2nd International Conference on Sustainability in Architectural Design and Urbanism 29 August 2018, Semarang, Indonesia
Abstract
Urban design and planning can contribute to the making of enjoyable civic environments. Urban places beloved by the citizens do not only exhibit visual comfort and convenient urban structure, but also provide a feeling of
satisfaction and psychological rewards. In the article, urban places like the entertainment zones in the United States and playable places in South Korea are described. A sense of liking, desires for social activities, and immersive environments (mental involvement in urban environment) associated with play and participatory experience are discussed as part of the playable features embedded in cities.

Abstract
Rapidly expanding urban agglomerations create various industrial and developmental challenges, and trigger debates about globalization in many fields especially in relation to basic need, self-resilience, and eco-development. As a consequence, it is urgently necessary to promote the perspectives of peripheral villages in regards to the resilience concept based on sustainable local development. This research focuses on the peripheral area of Bangke Village, located in the peripheral hilly area of Kota Agung Subdistrict, Lahat Regency, South Sumatera Province, Indonesia. It has distinctive cultural heritage richness both material and immaterial, specific landscapes and natural resources, as well as social and historical values. However, the conditions are vulnerable, which not only threatened its existence of the local and national characteristics but also the subject of the local development. The objective of this research is providing a focused analysis of local potential toward the explorative scenarios as an initial step to promote sustainable local development within the framework of village alliance. The village alliance is an innovative and applicative analysis framework for the context of peripheral development area, especially in Indonesia. It connects Bangke Village as an axis with other eleven villages in the district as an alliance. Regarding the local potential, this research outlines five explorative scenarios such as food network, tourism, wood production, new village, and centre of learning. Hence, the methodological framework used the case study that consists of multiple tools of field survey, mapping analysis, and SWOT analysis.

From sacred to secular: Baruk architecture on secular buildings in Sarawak
Atta Idrawani Zaini , Bambang Karsono and Awang Hasim Awang Sulong Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd
IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, Volume 213, The 2nd International Conference on Sustainability in Architectural Design and Urbanism 29 August 2018, Semarang, Indonesia
Abstract
The Bidayuh people of Sarawak are known for their baruks. A baruk is often observed as having a round form with a conical roof that has various functions such as a courthouse, a meeting place and a residence for the male adolescents.
These are all secular purposes built around its religious functions, constructed based on their traditional beliefs that qualify it to be considered as a sacred building. Recently, the pursuit for fulfilling political and commercial objectives has made the architecture of baruks to be copied onto various secular buildings in Sarawak, ranging from a visitor centre to a governmental building. Despite much have been praised as an attempt to revive this endangered
architecture, applying its language onto contemporary secular buildings sparks a debate whether the sacredness of the original baruks are respected or is it just a cultural commodification. This paper attempts to justify the adaptation of baruk architecture into secular buildings. It is discussed through a grounded theory approach, with the methods used were in the form of literature review and on-site observations. This paper suggests the extent of applying baruk sacred architecture into secular buildings should be observed, allowing more potential discussions in the academia pertaining adaptation of sacred indigenous architecture in contemporary buildings.

Mapping the socio-religious spaces of a kampong: a case of Kauman Semarang

Abstract
Cultural identity and creativity in diversity rise up as dominant issues in international development agenda. Identity is an important element of a nation to show who the citizens really are in the era of globalization. The existence of an urban kampong is often
marginalized due to 'bad' infrastructure and social conditions. At this moment Kauman seems to experience the effects of Johar Market burning in 2016.
