THE CORRELATION OF BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) TOWARD RISK OF HYPERTENSION ON MEDICAL STUDENTS
OF YARSI UNIVERSITY BATCH 2015 REVIEWED FROM MEDICAL AND ISLAMIC VIEW
Shafira Imaniari1, Qomariyah RS2, Endang Purwaningsih3, Irwandi M. Zen4 ABSTRACT
Background: Hypertension is one of public health problems in the world including Indonesia. One of the factors that causes hypertension is overweight. Islam teaches to always look carefully toward food consumed.
Objectives: This study aimed at knowing the correlation of body mass index (BMI) toward risk of hypertension on medical students of YARSI University Batch 2015 and Islamic view on good dietary habit for health.
Methods: The sample consisted of 150 students. This study was conducted by calculating BMI and doing Cold Pressor Test (CPT) to know the risk of hypertension.
Results: Respondents with non-obese BMI and hyporeactor were 82 respondents (74.5%). While respondents with obese BMI and hypereactor were 22 respondents (55.5%). The result of Chi-square statistical test showed a correlation of BMI toward risk of hypertension (P-value= 0.001).
Conclusions: Respondents with obese BMI are at higher risk of future hypertension. Islam teaches to consume halal and thayyib food and not consume too much food to prevent disease.
Suggestions: Further studies, with more medical student samples from various university, are warranted to get variative results.
