Vice President Meredith Jernstedt was the Canby, Oregon, representative for the FFA Leadership Conference in Washington, D. In recent years, it has been involved in vocational education and increasing the class size; students, a- a record number of those students elected to opt out benefits of FFA membership. A recent national FFA study explored desirable changes needed in FFA programs and policies to expand the FFA-vocational agriculture partnership to additional students.
This nationwide effort included over 100 commercial agriculture departments and nearly 3,000 junior and senior students in those departments. 34;What changes do you feel are needed in FFA?" A summary of the responses to this question is shown in the table at the top of the page. 34;schedule chapter meetings when members can attend." This same item was sixth in priority for FFA members.
The information revealed by the national study has several implications for chapters that need to expand the benefits of membership to more vocational agriculture students. A reasonable question to ask at this point might be, "What can I do for my chapter to extend the benefits of FFA leadership and citizenship to additional vocational agriculture students at my school?" As we examine the responses of these students, we find several clues that can help us formulate policies, plan programs, and implement activities that will attract more and more people. The mini-chapters are organized by regular classes (vo-ag I, II, etc.) and specialized classes (ag mechanics, horticulture, and others).
The entire chapter makes the final decision on the activities that will be included in the annual plan. Each member of the chapter is involved in at least one permanent committee of the activity program.

Every morning during the season Jim catches the horses, grooms them and saddles them up for the day. In the evening he rubs each horse down, grooms and feeds oats, before turning them out to pasture. And he demonstrated his business acumen by using his recreational facilities in the fall and winter as well.
Jim, a Minnesota Outdoor Recreation Proficiency Award winner, built three brush and rock hunting blinds for family use on the marsh side of the small lake. Working in partnership, Jim and his father have built seven fish houses for ice fishing. Operating under a state license, they transport the fish houses to nearby Big Stone Lake and rent them to approximately 20 people per week.

Soon the menagerie grew until the need for organization was evident. Additional shelters and enclosures were built near the entrance to the ranch where everyone could stop and watch the animals. Usually two chapter members who take care of the animals, occasionally two younger guys who work in the agriculture program but aren't old enough to enroll in vo-ag at the high school on the ranch, take care of the zoo. Two of the boys decided to break the leashes of the goat and the deer, since they are sotame. Leashes were put on the deer and the goat to get them used to the feeling of wearing a leash.
They do not walk far and are often seen grazing outside the fence, standing and watching in the zoo, and have sometimes been seen grazing on the lawn of the house nearby. They also played for their local chapter's banquet for three years and in 1971 played for the state Young Farmers Convention. In August of 1971, the Minigh brothers performed for the National Disc Jockeys Convention at White Sulfur Springs.
The highlight was the opening of the arena doors and the address of the Vice President of Kenya. Amer Rausch, their father, is a local farmer and also an avid supporter of FFA. Sandager and the Kenyan teachers and students sorted and placed the books on the shelves of the St.
Elementary schools in Kenya are the teachers' copies." I've had teachers I've worked with take these books out into the classroom. On the surface, the Cowlitz seems slow and rambunctious, but underneath lives a dangerous and turbulent life. They've learned that all Flotation devices must be Coast Guard approved or the fishermen will be subject to it.
Members learned that different classes of boats require certain equipment to be stamped with Coast Guard approval. Normal fishing vessels on the Cowlitz must have approved Coast Guard flotation devices, flashlights, horns and fire extinguishers.
A FEDERAL CASE
There were no problems using the books as English is Kenya's primary language and Swaheli is the secondary language. They then invited the Coatt Guard to one of the FFA meetings and opened the meeting to the students.
