However, they were also newsworthy in that they did not catch on to popular usage of the word; they were shot with bows and arrows.

Gar, on the other hand, are most vulnerable during the hot summer months as they surface for air. When carp are spawning, you can see them wallowing in water that is not deep enough to cover their backs. The archer can wade and hunt, but he must walk cautiously and slide his feet, for the fish are extremely creepy in shallow water.

As they move into shallow water, over sandbanks and sandbars, the fish will rise to the surface and feel safe under the protection of darkness. Gars grind and feed in the Arkansas River just below the huge concrete structure, with large and small gar rolling all over the surface. During the day they may only be visible for a split second as they roll, but at night they remain on the surface, clearly visible, with eyes shining in the bright light.

FFA IN ACTION

A bowfishing kit consisting of an arrow, harpoon point, reel and line sells for about eight "goats." The reel is drum-shaped, made of light metal or plastic, and the line is manually spun back to a shot. An alternative is to use a closed-face spinning reel, seton-free spool where the line will flow freely when the arrow is shot; and then the archer just turns the handle as he would when fishing with rod and reel. Plastic or rubber wheels are used to stabilize the arrow in flight, rather than feather it.

The other has rigid prongs and the head must be unscrewed before the arrow can be removed. Hitting a fish with an arrow is not as basic as it seems, even for very close shots, less than 10 feet, mainly due to refraction. The light rays bend when they hit the surface of the water, making it appear that the fish is closer to the surface than it really is.

In water no more than six inches deep, there is no problem: the archer can aim directly at his quarry. But the deeper the water, the more refraction, and the archer must compensate by aiming below the fish.

In the trade booth with Pat there was a loom, a computer printout terminal, loads of computer printed patterns and bolts of fabric he has woven with computer generated designs. To illustrate how he does this, take a simple eight-thread repeat where a computer printout shows 881 patterns with instructions to tread. Pat, an honors student in dairy science at Michigan State University, has developed an avid interest in weaving.

But what really drove him to study the patterns scientifically was the tablecloth—a linen tablecloth woven in an old Scandinavian pattern by an older weaver in the shop. But while tinkering with pattern variations on the loom, he decided that "there must be a faster way to develop new weaving patterns". During the fair, Pat was the only student with his own exhibition.

In fact, unlike other exhibitors who pay premium prices for booths and floor space, Pat's booth was donated by the Apparel Manufacturers Association. 34;It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," says Pat, recalling the hurried phone calls to Dallas, to his department chair, and back to the phone company. But how does a dairy science major end up in the weaving lab and which brought him success.
