Some Pertinent Ideas 1. Concept of Motivation
Gardner in Benson (1991:35) states that motivation in learning English are those factors that encourage and direct students' activities as their effort and desire to learn English. In addition to the above types of motivation, instrumental and integrative, a third was added to analyze the situation of English as a foreign language in Japan (Benson. Motivated behavior directs students, they direct their energy to what can motivate them, for example, expanding social interaction, receiving praise from teacher, that means they are.
Because behavior is directed toward specific goals, students can choose activities that meet their needs. internal; factors such as students' interest in learning English, students' attitudes toward the English language, and students' aptitude or linguistic ability. In addition, he says that among the motivational factors we must not forget the textbook used, the ways of presenting and teaching the language, individual differences in language abilities, intelligence and interest (Kharma, 1991:104).
For this kind of students' motivation must be attracted by the culture of the target language community, and in the strong integrated motivation they want to integrate themselves into this culture. This term describes a situation where students believe that mastering the target language will help them get a better job, a better position or status. Most of all, it depends on paying more attention to the students than to the teacher.
The stories of inspiring characters are selected based on their significant contribution to humanity and the process the characters have taken to turn their ideas and imaginations into reality. In the context of teaching and learning English, the spirit of numbers is likely to be adopted by the students to realize that studying hard or learning more is a key factor in improving English skills. Knowing the characteristics of the students is the first step that will help the teachers to help them.
As stated in the School Based Curriculum, the purpose of the English subject in secondary schools is to develop communicative competence in spoken and written English through the development of related skills. Students will be able to support their next level of study through the ability of the English communicative competence. The standard of competence and basic competence that the research focuses on is the standard of content in the English subject, especially the English speaking lesson for the eighth grade students in the second semester of SMP Negeri 2 Sungguminasa.
