MOTTO

Firstly, Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the world for His Mercy and Blessing to enable me to complete this undergraduate thesis. I realize the imperfection of this thesis; nevertheless, I hope that this title piece of the master's thesis can contribute something to the improvement of the teaching and learning of English in general.

INTRODUCTION

The Concept of Reading Comprehension a. The Definition

Furthermore, Jean Wallace points out that reading comprehension is the search for meaning, actively using our knowledge of the world and the text to understand each new thing we read.13. In conclusion, reading comprehension is the activity for the reader in the reading activity to understand the full meaning of the written text. The purpose of scanning is to extract specific information without reading the entire text. .. 14 http.www.timeforlearning.com.id, Reading Comprehension, diunduh pada 22 Mai 2008.

For example, the question may refer to whether the statement in the second sentence supports, contradicts, or repeats the same information. 16. Questions should be answered based on the information contained in the passage, and students are not expected to rely on outside knowledge of a particular topic. Note the transitions from one idea to another and examine the relationship between different ideas or parts of the passage.

The Concept of Reading Comprehension Ability a. The Definition of Reading Comprehension Ability

In light of this, a skill test of reading speed and reading comprehension is set up. The reading pace depends to a large extent on factors such as the type of material, whether easy and general, or difficult and specialized, and the purpose for which the reading is being done. The first and fundamentally most important step in designing a test is the selection of the material.

The preference of news over other types of reading material to be used in the speed test. Since the purpose of the comprehension test in this experiment was to measure level, and not speed of comprehension, it was thought prudent to separate the comprehension from the speed test: "rate score should be independent of the strength of comprehension. The Procedure of mind mapping technique The following are the steps to make mind map:.

The Procedure of Mind Mapping Technique The following are the steps of making mind map

The term 'mind mapping' was used for the first time by Buzan (1993) who describes it as a teaching strategy where the learner puts superordinate concepts on paper and then connects subordinate concepts as appropriate. Mind mapping is a utilization technique of the whole brain that uses a visual image and also other graphic things to form an impression in our mind. Kaufman also argued that mind mapping is a useful technique to use while reading, as the non-linear format allows you to see the entirety of your notes at a glance, then easily place new information in the appropriate branch or making connections between ideas. The Relationship of Mind Mapping Technique to Reading Comprehension Ability

Mind mapping has been popularized by Buzan, who claims that it is an outstanding method of note-taking.18 Mind mapping can develop their memorization, brainstorming, learning, and creativity skills. This means that through mind mapping students are guided to develop their background knowledge of the text they have to read. Mind mapping allows for more creativity when managing opinions and information, as well as allowing the note taker to connect words with visual representations.

18 Bahareh Malekzadeh,"The Effect of Mind Mapping Strategy on Comprehending Implicit Information in EFL Reading Text" dalam International Journal of Educational Investigation, (Iran: Islamic Azad University), Vol.2, No.3: Maret 2015, h 81-90 . In general, mind mapping combines two processes for reading comprehension: top-down and bottom-up processes. Therefore, mind mapping techniques are expected to create attractive and effective learning of reading comprehension.

  • Paradigm

Therefore, the purpose of this research was to observe the implementation of mind maps in the teaching of reading comprehension. Thus, the theoretical framework in this research is if the mind map is implemented in the process of teaching and learning English, that is, with students. From the above paradigm, it can be described that the result of this research depends on the use of mind mapping technique.

If the use of the mind map is good, the students' reading comprehension ability will be good. If the use of the mind map is fair, the students' reading comprehension ability will be fair. And if the use of the mind map is bad, the students' reading comprehension ability will be bad.

Hypothesis

  • Hypothesis Formulation

There is a positive and significant difference between the group that uses mind mapping to understand a reading text and the group that does not use it in the eighth grade of SMP IT Bina Insani Metro. A hypothesis can be stated in null form, which is a claim that no relationship or no difference exists between or among the variables. This form of null hypothesis is a statistical hypothesis that can be tested within the framework of probability theory.

It is also a non-directive form of hypothesis”.19 This hypothesis is considered to be an assumption about a population parameter.

Research Design

  • Sample
  • Total Sampling Technique

The population of this research is the eighth grade students of SMP IT Bina Insani Metro. In order to generalize the results of the research to the real population, the sample taken must be reflective and represent the population. This technique was chosen by the researcher because of the small size of the population which has a special set of characteristics and the unusual characteristics that the population has.

Accordingly, the sample of this research is eighth grade students, which consists of 30 students. Furthermore, he explains that if the subjects are less than 100 people, all the subjects are used, but if the subjects are more than 100 people, only 10-15% or 20-25% of the subjects are used.26 Therefore, all the subjects in this research are involved. Thus, the writer selected Class A (Experimental Class) consisting of 18 students and Class B (Control Class) consisting of 12 students as the sample of this research. A total of 30 students, both male and female, are included in the research.

The pre-test is given to the students at the first meeting to find out the students' skills first before they use the mind map in their reading comprehension. The posttest is given at the last meeting to see if the treatment has made any contribution. the ability of students in the experimental group is higher than the control group or if there is significant differentiation between the scores of the experimental group and the results of the control group. Then, there is the motto “The school of champions and hunter students become people who have skills in every field and bring benefits to people's lives. Hypothesis Testing

  • NARI

It can be inferred that there were students who passed from 70 as Minimum Mastery Criteria (MMC) or high category. Therefore, it can be concluded that the students' reading comprehension ability in the post-test was increased or good. The authentic table of pretest score and posttest score of seventh grade of SMP IT Bina Insani Metro.

The table above showed that the total sample of pre-test or before treatment was 30 with the minimum value 45 and maximum 75, mean of pre-test was 57.1667 with the standard deviation 8.57858. The table above illustrated that the mean of pre-test and post-test was 1.383 and its standard deviation was 8.447 with standard error 1.547, t. From the value above it can be deduced that there is a positive and significant influence of the use of mind mapping technique on the students' reading comprehension ability at the eighth grade of SMP IT Bina Insaniin academic year 2016/2017.

Interpretation

The hypothesis used in this present research is the positive impact of using the mind mapping technique on students. On the other hand, there is a positive and significant impact of the use of mind mapping technique on the reading comprehension ability of students in the eighth grade of SMPIT Bina Insani Metro. Thus, we agree with Han's statement that the mind mapping technique appears to be completely effective in many studies.

The present study can be included among those who favor the use of mind mapping in the language classroom. These results show the green light for the inclusion of mind mapping in secondary school students, which aims to teach reading points.

Limitation

Conclusion

Suggestion

This means that there is a positive and significant influence of Mind Mapping application technique on the reading comprehension ability of students in the eighth grade of SMP IT Bina Insani Metro. The researcher strongly expects that this study can contribute to the school, such as a good inspiration for further studies of learning English reading text. We recommend that the school conduct a further study of the teacher's use of the mind mapping technique in teaching reading.
