STUDENTS’ ABILITY ON USING ADJECTIVE CLAUSE (A Study at Second Year Students of English Department STKIP PGRI
Sumatera Barat in 2015/ 2016 Academic Year)

ABSTRAK
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui permasalahan kemampuan siswa dalam menggunakan kata sifat klausa dalam Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk menganalisis kemampuan siswa dalam menggunakan klausa kata sifat pada kelas bahasa Inggris jurusan STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat, dimana populasi siswa kelas II. Pemilihan sampel menggunakan teknik sampel acak sebanyak 24 siswa. Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan tes tata bahasa yang memiliki 50 pertanyaan. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh selama penelitian, klasifikasi kemampuan siswa dalam menggunakan klausa kata sifat pada siswa tahun kedua Jurusan Bahasa Inggris STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat pada tahun ajaran 2016/2017, siswa dikategorikan di tingkat Bagus (41,66%), Sedang (41,66%), Rendah (16,66%), dan siswa tergolong dalam kategori Gagal (37,5%). Skor rata-rata dari klasifikasi kemampuan siswa adalah 45,75%. Sebagian besar siswa memiliki masalah dalam menggunakan Who (20,83%) dan sebagian siswa lebih mudah menjawab pertanyaan dalam penggunaan Whom (91.66%). Disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam menggunakan klausa kata sifat adalah rendah. Itu berarti mahasiswa kurang memahami materi tentang adjective clause.

INTRODUCTION
Grammar as an important part is one of the elements that support the four language skills. One of grammatical components which are learnt at English Department is adjective clause. Adjective clause is one of topics in English Grammar that is taught and learnt by the second, third, fourth and fifth semester students of English Department at STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Although learning adjective clause easy but it is still
found mistakes or errors in contracting sentence with it. Many of Students cannot able to fully express their problem because they don not know how to start expressing what they haven’t understood. Many of them still confuse when using adjective clause in sentences. Based on the researcher’s experience and observation at English department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat found that in students’ final result grammar test of Grammar II, most of
2 them had problem on differentiate adjective clause. The problems that students faced on use adjective clause. First, Students could not differentiate between adjective clause and noun clause. Second, student had difficulties in relative pronoun (who, whom).
And last, students could not identify the function of relative pronoun whether it was for person or thing. Therefore, the researcher limits to analyze students’ ability on using adjective clause especially on using who and whom. Furthermore, reseacher also limits time of research from January until April 2017. Based on the problem above, the research question are formulated in the following questions: How is student’s ability of English Department in second year of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat in academic year 2015/2016 on using adjective clause?”
Dealing with research question above ,The purpose of the research is to know students’
ability on using adjective clause especially on using who and whom. Therefore, the researcher decides to focus the students’
ability on using adjective clause especially on using who and whom.
Adjective clause is essential because in the English Magazine, Newspaper, and other frequently use adjective clause. Usually, we think adjective clause is about a single word used before a noun to modify its meaning.
According to Keith and Elena, Etc (2008:187), adjective clause is a group of words with a subject and a verb that modifies or describe a noun or a pronoun.
Then, Yule (2009:240) states it provides some information about the person or thing indicated by that noun phrase. They are sometimes called ‘relative clauses’ because, like many adjectives, they often describe and help to identify the person or talked about.
An adjective clause usually comes immediately after the noun. It usually begins with a relative pronoun. According to Azar (2002: 267), adjective clause is dependent clause that modifies a noun. It describes, identifies, or gives further information about noun. Furthermore, an adjective clause is also called a relative clause. According to Oshima and Hogue (1999:212) there are different types of adjective clauses. One of the type of adective clause is Relative pronoun for person, there are who and whom. Relative pronoun who was use to explain person antecedent of relative clause.
Huddleston and Pullum(2005:13) give an example about who relative pronoun: The secretary wrote to all the members who were absent from the meeting. They explains that
“The underline relative clause modifies members and combines with it to form the
3 head nominal. Then, Regarding relative pronoun whom, Broukal (2004:346) states that whom is very formal English. The use whom only in formal situation, such as when writing for a school and speaking in a speech.
RESEARCH METHODS
The design of this research was a descriptive research which describes the phenomenon that happened in the field.
According to Gay and Airasian (2000:257) a descriptive study determines and describes the way things are. It means that descriptive research to determine and describe based on fact and phenomenon related of research without giving treatment to the students.
This research was conducted at students’ second year of English Department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat in academic 2015/2016. The researcher analyzed the data that have obtained from grammar test.
Firstly, the researcher permited to the lecture before distribute the test. Second, the researcher explained about material and instruction of question. Then, the researcher distributed the sheet of test that has 50 items to students. The test consisted multiple choice, complete sentence, and error analysis. Each item was given 2 point for correct answer and 0 point for wrong answer. The total score was 100 points.
After that, the students were given 45 minute for doing the test. Then, after the students finished the test, the researcher collected all of students’ worksheet to be analyzed to get the result of this research.
After collecting data, the researcher classified the student’s ability by using the classification was suggested by Arikunto (2010:245). the researcher had done some steps, First, the researcher checked and calculated the students’ score test with formula; S = R x 2, Second, the researcher calculated students’ mastery level in order to know students’ ability by using formula:
X = ∑X/N. Finally, the researcher analyzed students’ ability using the percentage formula as follows: P= F/Nx100%. After measuring the student’s ability result by using percentage, researcher classified the student’s ability by using the classification was suggested by Arikunto (2010:245): with conversion score betweens 80-100 was categories excellent, score 66-79 was categories good, score 56-65 was categories Fair, score 46-55 was categories poor, and score below 39 was categories fail.
FINDING AND DISCUSSION
Based on data analyzing, the researcher found that the students’ ability on using adjective clause at second year of English department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat
4 was categorized as “Poor”, because most of students got score betweens 36-54. Based on classification students’ ability by Arikunto (2010:245) states that conversion score below 39 is categorized as Poor.

Based on graphic, the classification of students’ ability on using adjective clause at students second year of English Department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat in 2016/2017 academic year, students categorized in the level “Good” was 1 student (41.66%), students categorized in the level “Fair” were 10 students (41.66%), students categorized in the level “Poor”
were 4 students (16.66%), students categorized in the level “Fail” were 9 students (37.5%).
The researcher found that most of students are able in answering the question number 16 and most of students are unable to answering question number 5. It can be interpreted that the question number 16 about whom is easy for students understanding on adjective clause with percentage 91.66% .It can concluded that most of students had difficulties to understand adjective clause especially in identify who percentage 20.83%.
CONCLUSION
The purpose of this research is to find out students ability on using adjective clause. In collecting the data about students’
ability on using adjective clause, the researcher did the research at students second year of English Department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat in 2015/2016 academic year in order to answer the research question states in chapter one. In collecting data, the researcher used grammar test to find out students’ ability and using percentage to classified the students’ ability by using the classification that suggested by Arikunto (2010:245). The grammar test consisted 50 items (35 multiple choice, 10 items complete sentences, 5 items in error analysis).
Based on finding, this research was Poor ability. The students score is in level

5 40-55 (45.75%). The researcher found that most of students were able in answering the question number 16 and most of students were unable answering question number 5.
It can be interpreted that the question number 16 about whom is easy for students understanding on adjective clause with percentage 91.66%. It can be concluded that most of students had difficulties to understand adjective clause especially in identifying who with percentage 20.83%. It means some of students understand related material and some of students do not understand related material. Based on the result in this research, there were some students have fair ability on identify adjective clause.
