Friday 14 January 2022 MORNING Time of Issue: 0820 hours IST ALL INDIA WEATHER SUMMARY AND FORECAST BULLETIN

Significant Weather Features

A feeble Western Disturbance seen as a trough in upper tropospheric levels runs along Long. 74°E to the north of Lat. 32°N. A trough runs from North Interior Karnataka to north interior Odisha in lower tropospheric levels. A cyclonic circulation lies over south Konkan in lower tropospheric levels.

• Under the influence of above systems:

i) Isolated light rainfall/snowfall very likely over higher reaches of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad on 14th January, 2022.

ii) Fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall very likely over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal & Sikkim, Telangana and Coastal Andhra Pradesh on 14th and isolated to scattered light/moderate rainfall over Vidarbha & Chhattisgarh on 14th January.

• Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over Southwest Bay of Bengal and another over south Tamil Nadu in lower tropospheric levels; isolated light rainfall/thundershower over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and Kerala & Mahe during next 5 days.

• Two fresh Western Disturbances very likely to affect northwest India, the 1st from 16th January and likely to cause isolated to scattered precipitation on 16th

& 17th; the 2nd from 18th and likely to cause light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread precipitation over Western Himalayan Region and light isolated to scattered rainfall over adjoining plains for subsequent 2-3 days.

Minimum Temperatures, Cold wave and Fog:

i) Cold wave conditions in isolated pockets very likely over northeast Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh and West Madhya Pradesh during next 2 days.

ii) Cold day conditions in isolated pockets very likely over Gujarat state, Punjab, Haryana & Chandigarh, West Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and north Rajasthan during next 24hrs.

iii) Dense/Very Dense Fog in isolated pockets in night/morning hours very likely over Western Himalayan region, Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura 0n 14th/15th; Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, north Rajasthan during next 2 days and over Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Sub- Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during next 5 days.

Main Weather Observations

♦ Rainfall/thundershower observed (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of yesterday): at many places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam; at a few places over Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Chhattisgarh and Telangana and at isolated places over Telangana, Konkan & Goa and Gangetic West Bengal.

♦ Significant amount of Rainfall (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of yesterday)(1 cm or more): Machilipatnam - 4; Rantachintala -2; Ongle, Kothagudem and Bapatla - 1 each.

Yesterday, Cold Day to severe cold day conditions observed in isolated parts of Punjab, East Madhya Pradesh and Northwest Rajasthan and West Haryana and Cold day conditions in isolated pockets over East Rajasthan and Gujarat state, West Madhya Pradesh and North Uttar Pradesh.

Fog observed (at 0530 hours IST of today): Dense to very dense fog in isolated pockets over Delhi (Palam) and West Rajasthan; Dense fog to moderate fog in isolated pockets over Himachal Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh,Bihar and North Interior Karnataka; Moderate fog in isolated pockets over Punjab and West Uttar Pradesh; Shallow fog in isolated Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Chandigarh, East Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, West Madhya Pradesh,Tripura, Odisha and Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yaman.

Visibility recorded (at 0530 hours IST of today)(500 m or less): Delhi (Palam) and Ganganagar-25 each;Sundernagar,Bahraich,Purnea and Belgaum-50 each; Amritsar, Delhi( Safdarjang) and Bareilly-200each.

♦ Minimum Temperature Departures (as on 13-01-2022): Minimum temperatures were markedly above normal (5.1°C or more) at isolated places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura; appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at many places over West Bengal & Sikkim, Jharkhand and Rayalaseema; at a few places over Odisha, Bihar, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Punjab and Andaman &

Nicobar islands and at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places over Chhattisgarh; at many places over Uttarakhand; at a few places over Marathwada and at isolated places over West Rajasthan and East Uttar Pradesh. They were appreciably below normal (- 3.1°C to -5.0°C) at a few places over Saurashtra & Kutch, East Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh and North Interior Karnataka and at isolated places over Konkan & Goa and East Madhya Pradesh; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at most places over Coastal Karnataka; at many places over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad; at a few places over South Interior Karnataka and at isolated places over Madhya Maharashtra and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the Lowest minimum temperature of 4.2°C was reported at Meerut (West Uttar Pradesh) over the plains of the country.

Maximum Temperature Departures (as on 13-01-2022): Maximum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at a few places over Kerala & Mahe; at isolated places over Gangetic West Bengal and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at a few places over Rayalaseema and South Interior Karnataka. They were markedly below normal (-5.0°C or less) at a few places over West Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Odisha and Madhya Maharashtra; appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C) at most places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Gujarat Region; at many places over Saurashtra & Kutch and East Madhya Pradesh; at a few places over Uttar Pradesh and Telangana; at isolated places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Konkan & Goa and North Interior Karnataka; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at most places over Coastal Karnataka; at many places over Uttarakhand; at a few places over Assam & Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura; at isolated places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands and near normal at rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the highest maximum temperature of 36.0°C was reported at Punalur &

K. Paramathy (Kerala & Tamilnadu).

Meteorological Analysis (Based on 0530 hours IST)

♦ The Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation over Haryana & neighbourhood at 3.1 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The feeble Western Disturbance as a trough in upper tropospheric levels with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 74°E to the north of Lat. 32°N persists.

♦ The trough from North Interior Karnataka to north Interior Odisha at 0.9 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over south Konkan & neighbourhood at 1.5 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over Southwest Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over south Tamil Nadu & neighbourhood at 0.9 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ A fresh Western Disturbance likely to affect western Himalayan region from 16th and another Western Disturbance likely to effect Northwest India from 18th January 2022.

Weather Forecast for next 5 days * upto 0830 hours IST of 19th January, 2022

♦ Meteorological sub-division wise detailed 5 days precipitation forecast is given in Table-1.

♦ No significant change in minimum temperatures over Gujarat State & Maharashtra next 24 hrs and gradual rise by 2-3°C thereafter.

♦ No significant change in minimum temperatures over East India during next 2 days and fall by 2-3°C thereafter.

♦ Shallow to Moderate fog in the night/morning hours in isolated pockets over over Odisha during next 3 days; over Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal during next 2 days.

♦ A fresh Western Disturbance very likely to affect from 18th and likely to cause light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread precipitation over Western Himalayan Region and light isolated to scattered rainfall over adjoining plains for during the period.

♦Isolated to scattered rainfall likely over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal.

♦ Dry weather likely over remaining parts of the country.

17 January (Day 4):Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning at isolated places likely over Tamilnadu, Puducherry &

Karaikal.

SIGNIFICANTWEATHERFEATURES

♦ An intense Western Disturbance along with its induced cyclonic circulation has affected Northwest India and adjoining areas of Central India during the week; movement of these systems supported by enhanced moisture supply from Arabian Sea has caused fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/snowfall activity over Western Himalayan Region on four to five days and fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity over adjoining plains of Northwest India on three to four days; under the influence of these systems, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall activity had occurred over parts of Central India on three to four days whereas isolated rainfall activity had occurred over parts of Gujarat State and Maharashtra on two to three days during the week; isolated heavy rainfall activity as well as thunderstorm accompanied with hailstorm activity also had been reported from Western Himalayan Region and plains of Northwest and Central India during the passage of the system; it has also caused isolated very heavy rainfall activity over Jammu Kashmir &

Ladakh and Punjab o

n one day each during the week.

♦ Under the influence of cyclonic circulations/troughs in the lower tropospheric levels, isolated rainfall activity had occurred over parts of Peninsular India and adjoining areas of Central India during the week; these systems supported by moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal have also caused isolated heavy rainfall activity / thunderstorm accompanied by hailstorm activity over these regions on one or two days during the second half of the week.

♦ Remnants of Western Disturbances have caused isolated to scattered rainfall activity over parts of east &

northeast India on two to three days during the week; movement of these systems supported by moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal have also caused widespread rainfall activity as well as thunderstorm accompanied with hailstorm activity over parts of east India towards the end of the week.

Heavy rain:

♦ Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places had occurred over Jammu Kashmir & Ladakh, Punjab and Odisha on one day each during the week.

♦ Heavy rainfall at isolated places had occurred over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu Kashmir & Ladakh, East Rajasthan and Telengana on two days each; over East & West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh on one day each during the week.

Hail Storm:

♦Thunderstorm with hailstorm at isolated places had occurred over Punjab, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha and Telengana on two days each; over East Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Gangetic West Bengal on one day each during the week.

Fog:

♦ Dense to very dense fog at many places had occurred over Punjab on one day during the week.

♦ Dense to very dense fog at a few places had occurred over Bihar on two days; over Haryana, Chandigarh

& Delhi and Punjab on one day each during the week.

♦ Dense to very dense fog at isolated places had occurred over West Rajasthan on four days; over Bihar on three days; over East Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand on two days each; over West Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, East Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh and Jharkhand on one day each during the week.

♦ Dense fog at isolated places had occurred over Gangetic West Bengal, Sub Himalayan West Bengal &

Sikkim, Odisha, East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and East Rajasthan on one day each during the week.

Temperature Scenario:

Cold Day

♦ Cold day to Severe Cold day conditions at many places had occurred over West Madhya Pradesh, at a few places over West Madhya Pradesh and at isolated places over Punjab on one day each during the week.

♦ Cold day conditions at many places with severe cold day conditions isolated places had occurred over East Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh on one day each during the week.

♦ Cold day conditions at isolated places had occurred over Gujarat Region, Saurashtra & Kutch and West Rajasthan on two days each; over East Rajasthan, Punjab and East Madhya Pradesh on one day each during the week.

♦ The highest maximum temperature of 36.0oC had been recorded at Punalur (Kerala & Mahe) on 11th &

12th January 2022 and the lowest minimum temperature of 3.4oC had been recorded at Churu (West Rajasthan) on 12th January 2022 over the plains of the country during the week.

METEOROLOGICALANALYSIS

♦ Last week’s Western Disturbance which lay as a cyclonic circulation over Afghanistan & neighbourhood extending upto 3.1 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long.65°E to the north of Lat.25°N was seen as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan &

adjoining Punjab between 1.5 & 3.1 km above mean sea level on 6th January 2021; it has moved away northeastwards on 7th January 2021.

♦ Last week’s induced cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan & adjoining Pakistan extending upto 0.9 km above mean sea level lay over southeast Rajasthan & neighbourhood and extended upto 0.9 km above mean sea level on 6th January 2021; It persisted over the same areas and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 7th; it lay over East Rajasthan & neighbourhood and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 8th; it lay over northeast Rajasthan & neighbourhood and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 9th; it lay over north Haryana & neighbourhood and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 10th; it persisted over the same areas and was seen at 1.5 km above mean sea level on 11th; it lay over northwest Uttar Pradesh & neighbourhood and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 12th January 2022.

♦ A Western Disturbance was seen as a cyclonic circulation over western parts of Afghanistan

&neighbourhood at 3.1 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft in mid & upper tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long.56°E to the north of Lat.24°N on 6th January 2021; it lay as a cyclonic circulation over south Afghanistan & neighbourhood between 3.1 & 7.6 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft in upper tropospheric levels with its axis at 9.5 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 65°E to the north of Lat. 15°N on 7th; it lay as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan

& neighbourhood between 3.1 & 7.6 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft with its axis at 9.5 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 70°E to the north of Lat. 20°N on 8th; it lay as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan & neighbourhood between 3.1 & 7.6 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft with its axis at 9.5 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 71°E to the north of Lat. 20°N on 9th; it lay as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan & adjoining Jammu division between 3.1 & 7.6 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft with its axis at 9.5 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 75°E to the north of Lat. 26°N on 10th; it was seen as a cyclonic circulation over northwest Rajasthan & adjoining Central Pakistan between 2.1 & 4.5 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 72°E to the north of Lat. 26°N on 11th; it was seen as a cyclonic circulation over northeast Rajasthan & neighbourhood between 2.1 & 5.8 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft in upper tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 7.6 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 77°E to the north of Lat. 26°N on 12th January 2022.

♦ A trough ran from the induced cyclonic circulation over East Rajasthan & neighbourhood to southwest Madhya Pradesh at 0.9 km above mean sea level on 8th January 2021; it ran from the induced cyclonic circulation over northeast Rajasthan & neighbourhood to Marathawada across West Madhya Pradesh at 0.9 km above mean sea level on 9th; it ran from the induced cyclonic circulation over north Haryana &

neighbourhood to southeast Madhya Pradesh at 0.9 km above mean sea level on 10th; it has become less marked on 11th January 2021.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining central parts of South Bay of Bengal and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 9th January 2022; it lay over Southwest Bay of Bengal &

neighbourhood and extended upto 5.8 km above mean sea level on 10th; it persisted over the same areas and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 11th; it persisted over the same areas and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 12th January 2022.

♦ A trough ran from North Interior Karnataka to north Madhya Maharashtra at 0.9 km above mean sea level on 10th & 11th January 2022; it ran from South Interior Karnataka to south Chhattisgarh at 0.9 km above mean sea level on 12th January 2022.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over north Konkan & neighbourhood between 1.5 km & 2.1 km above mean sea level on 10th January 2022; it persisted over the same areas between 1.5 km & 2.1 km above mean sea level on 11th; it lay over south Konkan & neighbourhood at 1.5 km above mean sea level on 12th January 2022.

♦ A trough ran from the cyclonic circulation over north Konkan & neighbourhood to Jharkhand at 1.5 km above mean sea level on 11th January 2022; it has become less marked on 12th January 2022.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over south Tamil Nadu & neighbourhood at 0.9 km above mean sea level on 12th January 2022.
