IDAHO STATE EXPORTS

# In 1999, Idaho’s goods exports were $2.2 billion, up 81

percent ($995 million) from 1992. During 1999, Idaho was the 37th largest state exporter of goods.

# In 1999, Idaho’s jobs supported by goods exports were an estimated 34 percent (6,094 jobs) higher than 1992. U.S.

jobs supported by goods exports pay 13 to 16 percent higher than the national average wage.

# In 1991, the latest year available, Idaho’s exports accounted for 28.8 percent of its manufacturing output and represented 22.0 percent of its total manufacturing employment.

# Idaho’s exports of manufactured products were up by 70 percent between 1993 and 1999 (from $1.2 billion in 1993 to $2.1 billion in 1999).

# The five largest manufacturing sectors in terms of Idaho’s exports were: Electronic and Electric Equipment ($760.1 million of exports in 1999), Industrial Machinery and Computers ($699.1 million), Food Products ($276.1 million), Scientific and Measuring Instruments ($108.6 million) and Chemical Products ($82.0 million). These five sectors accounted for 86 percent of the state’s total exports in 1999.

# Idaho is the country’s 21st largest agricultural exporting state, shipping $789 million in agricultural exports abroad in FY 1999. The largest export categories, vegetables and wheat, accounted for 59 percent of Idaho’s agricultural exports in FY 1999.

# Total exports from Idaho to NAFTA countries in 1999 were 64 percent higher than 1993 (pre-NAFTA), rising from

$227.7 million in 1993 to $372.8 million in 1999. During 1999, Canada was Idaho’s second largest export market, while Mexico was Idaho’s 9th largest export market. Exports to Canada in 1999 were 63 percent ($117.3 million) higher than 1993, to $302.7 million in 1999. Exports to Mexico in 1999 were 66 percent ($27.8 million) higher than 1993, to $70.1 million in 1999.

# In 1999, total exports from Idaho to Japan were 20 percent ($57.1 million) lower than 1993, to $236.6 million in 1999. During 1999, Japan was Idaho’s fourth largest export market.

# In 1999, total exports from Idaho to the European Union were 54 percent ($209.8 million) higher than 1993, to

$597.8 million in 1999.

# In 1999, Idaho exported $44.5 million to South/Central America and the Caribbean (excluding Mexico), $805.5 million to the Pacific Rim (excluding Japan and China) and $2.5 million to SubSaharan Africa.

# In 1999, Idaho exported $29.1 million to China, its 15th largest export market.
