MISSOURI STATE EXPORTS

# In 1999, Missouri’s goods exports were $8.0 billion, up

67 percent ($3.2 billion) from 1992. During 1999, Missouri was the 24th largest state exporter of goods.

# In 1999, Missouri’s jobs supported by goods exports were an estimated 24 percent (16,535 jobs) higher than 1992.

U.S. jobs supported by goods exports pay 13 to 16 percent higher than the national average wage.

# In 1991, the latest year available, Missouri exports accounted for 15.1 percent of its manufacturing output and represented 15.3 percent of its total manufacturing employment.

# Missouri’s exports of manufactured products were up by 54 percent between 1993 and 1999 (from $4.3 billion in 1993 to $6.7 billion in 1999).

# The five largest manufacturing sectors in terms of Missouri’s exports were: Chemical Products ($1.9 billion of exports in 1999), Industrial Machinery and Computers ($913.0 million), Food Products ($772.4 million), Electronic and Electric Equipment ($722.7 million), and Transportation Equipment ($630.5 billion). These five sectors accounted for 62 percent of the state’s total exports in 1999.

# Missouri is the country’s 15th largest agricultural exporting state, shipping $1.1 billion in agricultural exports abroad or 2.2% of the U.S. total in FY 1999. The largest export categories, soybeans and feed grains, accounted for 57 percent of Missouri’s agricultural exports in FY 1999.

# Total exports from Missouri to NAFTA countries in 1999 were 61 percent higher than 1993 (pre-NAFTA), rising from $1.9 billion to $3.1 billion in 1999. During 1999, Canada was Missouri’s largest export market, while Mexico was Missouri’s second largest export market. Exports to Canada in 1999 were 28 percent ($381 million) higher than 1993, to $1.7 billion in 1999. Exports to Mexico in 1999 were 139 percent ($803 million) higher than 1993, to $1.4 billion in 1999.

# In 1999, total exports from Missouri to Japan were 19 percent ($52.3 million) higher than 1993, to $328.5 million in 1999. During 1999, Japan was Missouri’s fifth largest export market.

# In 1999, total exports from Missouri to the European Union were 77 percent ($784 million) higher than 1993, to

$1.8 billion in 1999.

# In 1999, Missouri exported $934.9 million to South/Central America and the Caribbean (excluding Mexico), $936.8 million to the Asian members of APEC, and $64.0 million to SubSaharan Africa.

# In 1999, Missouri exported $165.1 million to China, its 11th largest export market.
