OHIO STATE EXPORTS
# In 1999, Ohio’s goods exports were $29.3 billion, up 70 percent ($12.1 billion) from 1992. During 1999, Ohio was the seventh largest state exporter of goods.
# In 1999, Ohio’s jobs supported by goods exports were an estimated 26 percent (65,020 jobs) higher than 1992.
U.S. jobs supported by goods exports pay 13 to 16 percent higher than the national average wage.
# In 1991, the latest year available, Ohio exports accounted for 20.5 percent of its manufacturing output and represented 20.0 percent of its total manufacturing employment.
# Ohio’s exports of manufactured products were up by 49 percent between 1993 and 1999 (from $18.7 billion in 1993 to $27.9 billion in 1999).
# The five largest manufacturing sectors in terms of Ohio’s exports were: Transportation Equipment ($8.0 billion of exports in 1999), Industrial Machinery and Computers ($5.3 billion), Chemical Products ($3.0 billion), Fabricated Metal Products ($2.2 billion), and Electronic and Electric Equipment ($2.0 billion). These five sectors accounted for 70 percent of the state’s total exports in 1999.

# Ohio is the country’s 13th largest agricultural exporting state, shipping $1.2 billion in agricultural exports abroad or 2.4% of the U.S. total in FY 1999. The largest export categories, soybeans, and feed grains, accounted for 64 percent of Ohio’s agricultural exports in FY 1999.
# Total exports from Ohio to NAFTA countries in 1999 were 68 percent higher than 1993 (pre-NAFTA), rising from $9.7 billion in 1993 to $16.2 billion in 1998. During 1999, Canada was Ohio’s largest export market, while Mexico was Ohio’s second largest export market. Exports to Canada in 1999 were 59 percent ($5.1 billion) higher than 1993, to $13.7 billion in 1999. Exports to Mexico in 1999 were 144 percent ($1.5 billion) higher than 1993, to $2.5 billion in 1999.
# In 1999, total exports from Ohio to Japan were running 38 percent ($346 million) higher than 1993, to $1.2 billion in 1999. During 1999, Japan was Ohio’s fifth largest export market.
# In 1999, total exports from Ohio to the European Union were 36 percent ($1.6 billion) higher than 1993, to $6.1 billion in 1999.
# In 1999, Ohio exported $1.4 billion to South/Central America and the Caribbean (excluding Mexico), $2.6 billion to the Pacific Rim (excluding Japan and China) and $19.0 million to SubSaharan Africa.
