UTAH STATE EXPORTS

# In 1999, Utah’s goods exports were $3.0 billion, up 22 percent ($543 million) from 1992. During 1999, Utah was the 34th largest state exporter of goods.

# In 1999, Utah’s jobs supported by goods exports were an estimated 10 percent (3,509 jobs) higher than 1992.

U.S. jobs supported by goods exports pay 13 to 16 percent higher than the national average wage.

# In 1991, the latest year available, Utah exports accounted for 17.2 percent of its manufacturing output and represented 17.7 percent of its total manufacturing employment.

# Utah’s exports of manufactured products increased by 40 percent between 1993 and 1999 (from $2.0 billion in 1993 to $2.8 billion in 1999).

# The five largest manufacturing sectors in terms of Utah’s exports were: Transportation Equipment ($663.1 million of exports in 1999), Primary Metals ($611.0 million), Electronic and Electric Equipment ($354.3 million), Industrial Machinery and Computers ($316.3 million), and Scientific and Measuring Instruments ($212.2 million). These five sectors accounted for 72 percent of the state’s total exports in 1999.

# Utah is the country’s 37th largest agricultural exporting state, shipping $151 million in agricultural exports abroad in FY 1999. The largest export categories, Live Animals and Meat (excluding poultry) and Hides and Skins, accounted for 67% of Utah’s agricultural exports in FY 1999.

# Total exports from Utah to NAFTA countries in 1999 were 64 percent higher than 1993 (pre-NAFTA), rising from $471.8 million in 1993 to $773.8 million in 1999. During 1999, Canada was Utah’s second largest export market, while Mexico was Utah’s sixth largest export market. Exports to Canada in 1999 were 48 percent ($210 million) higher than 1993, to $649.4 million in 1999. Exports to Mexico in 1999 were 289 percent ($92.4 million) higher than 1993, to $124.4 million in 1999.

# In 1999, total exports from Utah to Japan were 13 percent ($32.5 million) higher than 1993, to $291.1 million in 1999. During 1999, Japan was Utah’s third largest export market.

# In 1999, total exports from Utah to the European Union were 140 percent ($690 million) higher than 1993, to

$1.2 billion in 1999.

# In 1999, Utah exported $115.9 million to South/Central America and the Caribbean (excluding Mexico), $462.4 million to the Asian members of APEC, and $9.6 million to SubSaharan Africa.

# In 1999, Utah exported $25.7 million to China, its 19th largest export market.
