ARKANSAS STATE EXPORTS

# In 1999, Arkansas’ goods exports were $2.0 billion, up 67 percent ($809 million) from 1992. During 1999, Arkansas was the 39th largest state exporter of goods in the United States.

# In 1999, Arkansas’ jobs supported by goods exports were an estimated 23 percent (3,558 jobs) higher than 1992.

U.S. jobs supported by goods exports pay 13 to 16 percent higher than the national average wage.

# In 1991, the latest year available, Arkansas’ exports accounted for 16.0 percent of its manufacturing output and represented 14.7 percent of its total manufacturing employment.

# Arkansas’ exports of manufactured products were up by 66 percent between 1993 and 1999 (from $1.2 billion in 1993 to $1.9 billion in 1999).

# The five largest manufacturing sectors in terms of Arkansas’exports were: Food Products ($506.4 million of exports in 1999), Chemical Products ($282.5 million), Electronic and Electric Equipment ($199.0 million), Transportation Equipment ($196.0), and Industrial Machinery and Computers ($184.3 million). These five sectors accounted for 68 percent of the state’s total exports in 1999.

# Arkansas is the country’s 11th largest agricultural exporting state, shipping $1.2 billion in agricultural exports abroad or 2.5% of the U.S. total in FY 1999. The three largest export categories, Rice, Poultry, and Soybeans, accounted for 78 percent of Arkansas’ agricultural exports in FY 1999.

# Total exports to Arkansas to NAFTA countries in 1999 were 83 percent higher than 1993 (pre-NAFTA), rising from $582.9 million in 1993 to $1.1 billion in 1999. During 1999, Canada was Arkansas’ largest export market, while Mexico was Arkansas’ 2nd largest export market. Exports to Canada in 1999 were 65 percent ($330.9 million) higher than 1993, to $838.1 million in 1999. Exports to Mexico in 1999 were 205 percent ($155.0 million) higher than 1993, to $230.8 million in 1999.

# In 1999, total exports from Arkansas to Japan were 4 percent ($4.5 million) lower than 1993, to $110.2 million in 1999. During 1999, Japan was Arkansas’ fourth largest export market.

# In 1999, total exports from Arkansas to the European Union were 53 percent ($101.5 million) higher than 1993, to $292.4 million in 1999.

# In 1999, Arkansas exported $73.9 million to South/Central America and the Carribean (excluding Mexico), $270 million to the Pacific Rim (excluding Japan and China) and $12.1 million to SubSaharan Africa.
