IOWA STATE EXPORTS

# In 1999, Iowa’s goods exports were $3.3 billion, up 89 percent ($1.5 billion) from 1992. During 1999, Iowa was the 31st largest state exporter of goods.

# In 1999, Iowa’s jobs supported by goods exports were an estimated 40 percent (10,011 jobs) higher than 1992. U.S.

jobs supported by goods exports pay 13 to 16 percent higher than the national average wage.

# In 1991, the latest year available, Iowa’s exports accounted for 14.6 percent of its manufacturing output and represented 14.9 percent of its total manufacturing employment.

# Iowa’s exports of manufactured products were up by 51 percent between 1993 and 1999 (from $2.0 billion in 1993 to

$3.0 billion in 1999).

# The five largest manufacturing sectors in terms of Iowa’s exports were: Industrial Machinery and Computers ($694.7 million of exports in 1999), Electronic and Electric Equipment ($442.6 million), Transportation Equipment ($338.2 million), Food Products ($317.8 million), Scientific and Measuring Instruments ($314.0 million). These five sectors accounted for 65 percent of the state’s total exports in 1999.

# Iowa is the country’s second largest agricultural exporting state, shipping $3.2 billion in agricultural exports abroad or 6.4% of the U.S. total in FY 1999. The largest export categories, soybean, and feed grains, accounted for 75 percent of Iowa’s agricultural exports in FY 1999.

# Total exports from Iowa to NAFTA countries in 1999 were 52 percent higher than 1993 (pre-NAFTA) rising from $1.2 billion in 1993 to $1.8 billion in 1999. During 1999, Canada was Iowa’s largest export market, while Mexico was Iowa’s second largest export market. Exports to Canada in 1999 were 48 percent ($519 million) higher than 1993, to

$1.6 billion in 1999. Exports to Mexico in 1999 were 100 percent ($84.9 million) higher than 1993, to $169.7 million in 1999.

# In 1999, total exports from Iowa to Japan were 85 percent ($76.9 million) higher than 1993, to $167.9 million in 1999.

During 1999, Japan was Iowa’s third largest export market.

# In 1999, total exports from Iowa to the European Union were 64 percent ($264 million) higher than 1993, to $675.5 million in 1999.

# In 1999, Iowa exported $139.8 million to South/Central America and the Caribbean (excluding Mexico), $303 million to the Pacific Rim (excluding Japan and China) and $4.4 million to SubSaharan Africa.

# In 1999, Iowa exported $32.2 million to China, its 12th largest export market.
