NORTH DAKOTA STATE EXPORTS

# In 1999, North Dakota’s goods exports were $699.7 million, up 95 percent ($342 million) from 1992. During 1999, North Dakota was the 47th largest state exporter of goods.

# In 1999, North Dakota’s jobs supported by goods exports were an estimated 44 percent (2,336 jobs) higher than 1992. U.S. jobs supported by goods exports pay 13 to 16 percent higher than the national average wage.

# In 1991, the latest year available, North Dakota exports accounted for 14.4 percent of its manufacturing output and represented 12.2 percent of its total manufacturing employment.

# North Dakota’s exports of manufactured products were up by 60 percent between 1993 and 1999 (from $348.0 million in 1993 to $558.0 million in 1999).

# The five largest manufacturing sectors in terms of North Dakota’s exports were: Industrial Machinery and Computers ($294.5 million of exports in 1999), Transportation Equipment ($134.4 million), Food Products ($51.4 million), Chemical Products ($41.2 million), and Electronic and Electric Equipment ($10.2 million).

These five sectors accounted for 76 percent of the state’s total exports in 1999.

# North Dakota is the country’s 17th largest agricultural exporting state, shipping $918 million in agricultural exports abroad in FY 1999. The largest export categories, wheat, sunflower seeds and oil, and vegetables accounted for 65 percent of North Dakota’s agricultural exports in FY 1999.

# Total exports from North Dakota to NAFTA countries in 1999 were 37 percent higher than 1993 (pre-NAFTA), rising from $301.1 million in 1993 to approximately $412.1 million in 1999. During 1999, Canada was North Dakota’s largest export market, while Mexico was North Dakota’s sixth largest export market. Exports to Canada in 1999 were 34 percent ($99.9 million) higher than 1993, to $398 million in 1999. Exports to Mexico in 1999 were 364 percent ($11.0 million) higher than 1993, to $14.0 million in 1999.

# In 1999, total exports from North Dakota to Japan were 38 percent ($1.9 million) higher than 1993, to $6.8 million in 1999. During 1999, Japan was North Dakota 9th largest export market.

# In 1999, total exports from North Dakota the European Union were 134 percent ($127.9 million) higher than 1993, to $223.6 million in 1999.

# In 1999, North Dakota exported $13.3 million to South/Central America and the Caribbean (excluding Mexico),

$27.7 million to the Pacific Rim (excluding Japan and China) and $134.9 thousand to SubSaharan Africa.
