MICHIGAN STATE EXPORTS
# In 1999, Michigan’s goods exports were $47.4 billion,
up 89 percent ($22.4 billion) from 1992. During 1999, Michigan was the third largest state exporter of goods.
# In 1999, Michigan’s jobs supported by goods exports were an estimated 40 percent (146,763 jobs) higher than 1992. U.S. jobs supported by goods exports pay 13 to 16 percent higher than the national average wage.
# In 1991, the latest year available, Michigan’s exports accounted for 19.1 percent of its manufacturing output and represented 20.4 percent of its total manufacturing employment.
# Michigan’s exports of manufactured products were up by 59 percent between 1993 and 1999 (from $29.3 billion in 1993 to $46.6 billion in 1999).
# The five largest manufacturing sectors in terms of Michigan’s exports were: Transportation Equipment ($28.1 billion of exports in 1999), Industrial Machinery and Computers ($5.5 billion), Fabricated Metal Products ($3.3 billion), Electronic and Electric Equipment ($2.4 billion), and Chemical Products ($2.1 billion). These five sectors accounted for 87 percent of the state’s total exports in 1999. The transportation sector alone accounted for 59 percent of the state’s total exports in 1999.

# Michigan is the country’s 22nd largest agricultural exporting state, shipping $782 million in agricultural exports abroad in FY 1999. Michigan’s largest agriculture export categories, soybeans, feed grains, and vegetables, accounted for 59 percent of Michigan’s agricultural exports in FY 1999.
# Total exports from Michigan to NAFTA countries in 1999 were 74 percent higher than 1993 (pre-NAFTA), rising from $21.0 billion in 1993 to $36.5 billion in 1999. During 1999, Canada was Michigan’s largest export market, while Mexico was Michigan’s second largest export market. Exports to Canada in 1999 were 75 percent ($11.3 billion) higher than 1993, to $26.5 billion in 1999. Exports to Mexico in 1999 were 74 percent ($4.3 billion) higher than 1993, to $10.1 billion in 1999.
# In 1999, total exports from Michigan to Japan were 6 percent ($65.4 million) higher than 1993, to $1.2 billion in 1999. During 1999, Japan was Michigan’s fourth largest export market.
# In 1999, total exports from Michigan to the European Union were 57 percent ($1.9 billion) higher than 1993, to
$5.2 billion in 1999.
# In 1999, Michigan exported $1.1 billion to South/Central America and the Caribbean (excluding Mexico), $1.5 billion to the Pacific Rim (excluding Japan and China) and $16.7 million to SubSaharan Africa.
