WASHINGTON STATE EXPORTS

# In 1999, Washington’s goods exports were $39.7 billion, up 29

percent ($8.9 billion) from 1992. During 1999, Washington was the fifth largest state exporter of goods.

# In 1999, Washington’s jobs supported by exports were an estimated 5 percent (20,765) jobs lower than 1992. U.S. jobs supported by goods exports pay 13 to 16 percent higher than the national average wage.

# In 1991, the latest year available, Washington exports accounted for 43.6 percent of its manufacturing output and represented 31.4 percent of its total manufacturing employment.

# Washington exports of manufactured products were up by 44 percent between 1993 and 1999 (from $25.7 billion in 1993 to $37.0 billion in 1999).

# The five largest manufacturing sectors in terms of Washington exports were: Transportation Equipment ($28.0 billion of exports in 1999), Lumber and Wood Products ($1.5 billion), Industrial Machinery and Computers ($1.4 billion), Paper Products ($1.2 billion), and Food Products ($1.1 billion). These five sectors accounted for 84 percent of the state’s total exports in 1998. The Transportation Sector (mostly aircraft) accounted for 71 percent of the total.

# Washington is the country’s eighth largest agricultural exporting state, shipping $1.8 billion in agricultural exports abroad or 3.6% of the U.S. total in FY 1999. The largest export categories, fruit, vegetables, and wheat, accounted for 74 percent of Washington’s agricultural exports in FY 1999.

# Total exports from Washington to NAFTA countries in 1999 were 55 percent higher than 1993 (pre-NAFTA), rising from $2.1 billion in 1993 to $3.2 billion in 1999. During 1999, Canada was Washington’s third largest export market, while Mexico was Washington’s 24th largest export market. Exports to Canada in 1999 were running 51 percent ($939 million) higher than 1993, to $2.8 billion in 1999. Exports to Mexico in 1999 were 97 percent ($207 million) higher than 1993, to $422.0 million in 1999.

# In 1999, total exports from Washington to Japan were running 8 percent ($574 million) lower than 1993, to $6.3 billion in 1999. During 1999, Japan was Washington’s largest export market.

# In 1999, total exports from Washington to the European Union were 132 percent ($8.2 billion) higher than 1993 , to

$14.5 billion in 1999.

# In 1999, Washington exported $1.0 billion to South/Central America and the Caribbean (excluding Mexico), $5.5 billion to the Pacific Rim (excluding Japan and China) and $432.0 million to SubSaharan Africa.

# In 1999, Washington exported $2.1 billion to China, its fifth largest export market.
