WISCONSIN STATE EXPORTS

# In 1999, Wisconsin’s goods exports were $10.4 billion,

up 60 percent ($3.9 billion) from 1992. During 1999, Wisconsin was the 21st largest state exporter of goods.

# In 1999, Wisconsin’s jobs supported by goods exports were an estimated 18 percent (17,081 jobs) higher than 1992.

U.S. jobs supported by goods exports pay 13 to 16 percent higher than the national average wage.

# In 1991, the latest year available, Wisconsin exports accounted for 16.2 percent of its manufacturing output and represented 17.3 percent of its total manufacturing employment.

# Wisconsin exports of manufactured products were up by 59 percent between 1993 and 1999 (from $6.3 billion in 1993 to $10.0 billion in 1999).

# The five largest manufacturing sectors in terms of Wisconsin’s exports were: Industrial Machinery and Computers ($3.6 billion of exports in 1999), Scientific and Measuring Instruments ($1.4 billion), Transportation Equipment ($1.1 billion), Electronic and Electric Equipment ($828 million), and Paper Products ($660 million). These five sectors accounted for 72 percent of the state’s total exports in 1999.

# Wisconsin is the country’s 10th largest agricultural exporting state, shipping $1.3 billion in agricultural exports abroad or 2.6% of the U.S. total in FY 1999. The largest export categories, feed grains, vegetables, and dairy products, accounted for 57 percent of Wisconsin’s agricultural exports in FY 1999.

# Total exports from Wisconsin to NAFTA countries in 1999 were 79 percent higher than 1993 (pre-NAFTA), rising from $2.7 billion in 1993 to $4.8 billion in 1999. During 1999, Canada was Wisconsin’s largest export market, while Mexico was Wisconsin’s third largest export market. Exports to Canada in 1999 were 75 percent ($1.8 billion) higher than 1993, to $4.1 billion in 1999. Exports to Mexico in 1999 were 111 percent ($348 million) higher than 1993, to $662.7 million in 1999.

# In 1999, total exports from Wisconsin to Japan were 127 percent ($394 million) higher than 1993, to $703.9 million in 1999. During 1999, Japan was Wisconsin’s second largest export market.

# In 1999, total exports from Wisconsin to the European Union were 48 percent ($779 million) higher than 1993, to

$2.4 billion in 1999.

# In 1999, Wisconsin exported $653.4 million to South/Central America and the Caribbean (excluding Mexico), $1.1 billion to the Pacific Rim (excluding Japan and China) and $21.3 million to SubSaharan Africa.

# In 1999, Wisconsin exported $157.7 million to China, its 13th largest export market.
