NEW YORK STATE EXPORTS
# In 1999, New York’s goods exports were $47.0 billion, up 13 percent ($5.2 billion) from 1992. During 1999, New York was the fourth largest state exporter of goods.
# In 1999, New York’s jobs supported by goods exports were an estimated 17 percent (103,339 jobs) lower than 1992. U.S. jobs supported by goods exports pay 13 to 16 percent higher than the national average wage.
# In 1991, the latest year available, New York exports accounted for 18.6 percent of its manufacturing output and represented 18.0 percent of its total manufacturing employment.
# New York’s exports of manufactured products were up by 8 percent between 1993 and 1999 (from $38.5 billion in 1993 to $41.6 billion in 1999).
# The five largest manufacturing sectors in terms of New York’s exports were: Industrial Machinery and Computers ($6.2 billion of exports in 1999), Primary Metal Products ($5.0 billion), Transportation Equipment ($4.9 billion), Miscellaneous Manufacturing ($4.6 billion), and Scientific and Measuring Instruments ($4.4 billion). These five sectors accounted for over half of the state’s total exports in 1999.

# New York is the country’s 30th largest agricultural exporting state, shipping $368 million in agricultural exports abroad in FY 1999. The largest export categories, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and feed grains, accounted for 64 percent of New York’s agricultural exports in FY 1999.
# Total exports from New York to NAFTA countries in 1999 were 55 percent higher than 1993 (pre-NAFTA), rising from $8.4 billion in 1993 to $13.0 billion in 1999. During 1999, Canada was New York’s largest export market, while Mexico was New York’s fifth largest export market. Exports to Canada in 1999 were 52 percent ($3.7 billion) higher than 1993, to $10.8 billion in 1999. Exports to Mexico in 1999 were 69 percent ($916 million) higher than 1993, to $2.2 billion in 1999.
# In 1999, total exports from New York to Japan were 6.2 percent ($290 million) lower than 1993, to $4.4 billion in 1999. During 1999, Japan was New York’s second largest export market.
# In 1999, total exports from New York to the European Union were 9.1 percent ($1.1 billion) lower than 1993, to
$11.0 billion in 1999.
# In 1999, New York exported $3.4 billion to South/Central America and the Caribbean (excluding Mexico), $4.7 billion to the Pacific Rim (excluding Japan and China) and $310 million to SubSaharan Africa.
