IMPLEMENTATION OF DIGITAL MODULATION IN POWER LINE
CARRIER

ABSTRACT
One of the alternative technologies for communications that is using widely across the globe is Power Line Communications or Carrier “PLC” technology. Power Line carrier is a term used the power cables as communication media. The broadband PLC use on home for home automation and broadband data transfer i.e. internet in a low voltage distribution network in home electrical wring or between home and
transformer station. The narrowband PLC run on overhead lines network between power plan and transformer station. This research has been concentrated on over head network between substations.
The advantage of using power line carrier (PLC) for data transfer is that it does not require the installing of new cables. But the main disadvantage of PLC is a low transmission capacity. There has not been carried out much research work that is focused for increasing the data speed of existing power-line carrier of high voltage distribution networks.
In this work, the complex components of existing power-line carrier are explained and modeled with respect to frequency band up to 500 kHz. The required data for
attenuation of over head cables channel are noted in the frequency band 50 kHz – 500 kHz. The model is designed as dynamic systems model, and the effect of the
frequency and levels can be easily study and evaluate. Frequency scans can also be simulated to determine the most suitable frequencies that best match frequency- dependent behavior of PLC network. More importantly, frequencies that experience high attenuation or cause interference can be easily
identified and avoided. The PLC components built in library base, it is easy for mapping the real network and performing parameters study.
The exact teleprotection system (TPS) unit is designed as dynamic systems model, to enable the connection of four protection command on one unit.
Also in this work, the data rate is developed for the data transfer from 1200 bps using BFSK to 2400 bps using QDPSK.
For achievement the research goals a number of PLC and TPS systems studies were performed. Additionally, a set of tests were performed to investigate the consistency of the PLC and TPS models. The results showed that the models responded
satisfactorily according with the expected results of the tests.
