Abstract

This study handles narration in Ibn-Shuhaid's Andalusian poetry. It begins with surveying the meaning of narration and its relation to its meaning which had been adapted by Eastern or Western critics. This study then directs his focus on talking about the relation between narration and poetry. It shows how much the relation between narration and poetry is similar to the relation between narration and prose. This relation is represented through the ties between the literary text and its frame. This part is followed by a brief talk about Ibn-Shuhaid himself and his position as an artist. Then, it discusses the elements of narration theoretically, in order to apply them on Ibn-Shuhaid's poems. These elements are: setting ( time and place), characters, action and language. There are some important procedures preceding the last step. They are : a short talk about the reasons why Andalusian poets were interested in narration, with some samples containing Andalusian poetic works. After that, it moves to the narrative Intertextuality in Ibn- Shuhaid's poetry. This is followed by some examples from his poetry. Next, it tends to apply the narrative elements on his poetry. It starts with applying time as an effective element of Ibi- Shuhaid's poetry. The last step is achieved through talking about the factors of speeding up or slowing down narrating. It uses, then, place and characters as two elements of narration which were used equally in Ibn- Shuhaid's poetry. This last procedure was accompanied by applying the character's motion in two levels: mobility and stillness. This was followed by applying the action and the language as two factors of narrative elements which came together in a harmony way in Ibn-

Shuhaid's works. This last step was supported by talking about the effect of expressions selection on actions' track. This study has many conclusions. There are some of them: Ibn-Shuhaid's cultural background and his contemporary age's culture had a strong effect on his tendency to give his poems a narrative spirit.

In other words, narration appears in Ibn-Shuhaid's poems by applying the elements of narration.
