The Course Description in Brief:
This course deals with basics of semantics, its idioms and its use in spoken and written English. This course is a continuation of the general linguistics course. It also aims at familiarizing students with the following topics: semantics, context, reference, verbal inference, abstract relationships, deep and surface structures and logic. Models and forms of these topics will be given in detail in this course.

This course aims at familiarizing students with semantics, its idioms and its use in spoken and written English. It also aims at initiating students in the following topics: semantics, the context, reference, verbal inference, abstract relationships, deep and surface structure and logic.
Contents:
This course includes semantic concepts such as:
1. The basic and tangible meaning for the word or expression
2. Figurative and real meaning for words with the semantic characteristics 3. Kinds of speech and references
4. Verbal and written styles, semantic and relationships such as: synonym and antonym with different examples

Students will get a clear picture for the theoretical concept of semantic, the linguistic analysis of speech and the relationship between underlying and surface structure.

Students will be able to select certain semantic methods to deal with people around.
Analytical Skills:
Students will be able to analyze and duce meanings from people around them.
Assessment Methods:
Assessment mechanism is based on a continuous assessment of in-class performance, assignments, periodic tests, and a final exam.
