STELLALANDER-

WOLMARANSSTAD: A 28-year-old male suspect is expected to appear before the Wolmaransstad Magistrates’

Court on Monday, 19 December on a charge of robbery. The accused’s court appearance stems from his apprehension on Thursday, 15 December after he and two other suspects allegedly grabbed a bag containing an undisclosed amount of money from a man who was on his way to deposit it at the bank.

The victim immediately informed his employer and with the assistance of community members, the suspect was traced and handed over to the police.

Police investigations are continuing and more arrests are eminent.

STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: Meat lovers can expect to pay more this festive season.

Pay more for a braai this festive season

Daarom is daar ‘n geringe afname in aangemelde veediefstalsake terwyl gesteelde veegetalle steeds toeneem.

This is because meat inflation is at its highest level since November 2017, when it reached 14.9% year-on-year(y/y). An

agricultural economist at FNB, Paul Makube, explains that the reasons for the current strength in meat prices are a combination of

factors. These include “the tight supplies due to the pedestrian livestock slaughter, reduced imports of chicken amid higher prices, and the surprisingly resilient consumer demand despite tough economic conditions with the consumer’s financial welfare under strain.”

Additionally, he says that livestock producers have been facing enormous cost pressures stemming from a surge in raw feed input prices which necessitated the cost recovery as profit margins were severely squeezed.

“The price of maize, a major ingredient in feed manufacturing, has so far increased by 43% and 28% y/y for the white and the yellow maize respectively to an average of R4,989/ton and R4,837/ ton. “The price of soybeans, a major source of plant protein in livestock feed, so far averaged R10,561/

ton which is 39% higher y/y. “South Africa’s November 2022 consumer price inflation (CPI) surprised on the downside to 7.4%

year-on-year (y/y) from 7.6% September, but was still off the 2022 peak of 7.8% y/y reached during July, according to recent data from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA).

“The monthly CPI slowed by 0.3% month- on-month (m/m) in November from 0.4%

m/m the previous month. “After steadying in October, the food CPI rebounded by 0.5 percentage points in November 2022 to 12.8% y/y and still the highest level since April 2009 but decelerated by 0.5% m/m

0.9% higher month-on-month (m/m),”

explains Makube. He further adds that the SA’s food CPI sub-index shows that the November meat CPI stabilised but it still reached the highest level in 14 months at 10.5% y/y.

Meat prices:

Beef T-bone steak surged by 18% y/y at R135.48/kg;

Brisket and chuck increased 11.8% and 10.4% respectively y/y;

Pork ribs and fillets posted modest gains of 3.9% and 2.8% y/y at R94.59/kg and R104.62/kg;

Pork chops decreased by 3.8% y/y at R89.55/kg;

Lamb chops increased by 4.8% y/y to R195.55/kg; and

Chicken prices were up across most categories with an increase of 7.2% at R63.85/kg for fresh whole chickens while the individually quick frozen (IQF) 2 kg chicken portions increased by 5.1% y/y at R86.69.

Despite the increases, Makube says they expect to see some reprieve for consumers early in the New Year. This is because of the expected lower seasonal demand post the December holidays as the tight economic environment with costs of electricity and transport still being elevated, is likely to place downward pressure on meat prices.

STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: With record-high fuel prices in 2022, driving with fuel efficiency in mind has never been more relevant – especially as South Africans prepare to head out across provinces to their chosen December holiday destinations. As of 7 December 2022, motorists still pay more than R20/litre for petrol in South Africa, with petrol vehicles owners now paying R3.85 (19.6%) more for a litre of petrol, while diesel motorists are spending a significant R6.68 (38.7%) more for a litre since the start of the year when the price of 95 petrol was R19.61, and diesel was R17.24.

Additionally, toll fees nationwide have also increased, which the Department of Transport updated in March 2022. In light of the high travel costs this December, Ford Motor said there are things you can do to reduce your fuel consumption which could result in tangible savings.

Ford Motor’s seven tips to help you save on fuel when travelling this holiday season are listed below.

1. Service your vehicle

Make sure your vehicle services are up to date to ensure your vehicle runs optimally.

“Important service parts include fluids, lights, wipers, wheels and tyres, belts and brakes. If these are not in good condition, they might make your vehicle work harder and use more fuel,” said Ford.

2. Check your tyres

Check your tyre pressure regularly and ensure it is inflated according to the manufacturer’s recommendation (usually on a placard inside a door sill). Under-inflated or worn tyres can increase their rolling resistance, which means your vehicle will work harder to travel at a given speed – resulting in higher fuel consumption.

“Under-inflated tyres will not only cause more drag and increase your

fuel consumption, but they’ll also cause your tyres to wear out quicker

and impact vehicle handling,” Ford fuel economy and performance

attribute engineer Joe Percy. He added that drivers should choose replacement tyres carefully, as non-standard aftermarket tyres can drastically degrade your vehicle’s fuel economy.

3. Weight is your enemy The heavier the vehicle, the more fuel it uses – especially when taking off from a standstill and accelerating to

get up to speed. This may be hard for 4WD vehicles to side-step, but installing a bull bar, driving lights, a UHF antenna, roof racks and an extra spare wheel and the weight begins to add up. “You want to try and remove anything you’re not using, so things like emptying the gear out of drawers in the back of your vehicle or the 12V fridge you might have stored in the boot. This will help with fuel consumption,” said Ford.

4. Don’t over accessorise

While modifying your vehicle with some aftermarket accessories can make your car look nice, most will result in degradation, which will cause the vehicle to work harder and increase fuel consumption – especially for those that do a lot of highway driving.

Ford noted that the same goes for any bulky items you carry in the tray or roof. You shouldn’t be carrying gear on the roof of your 4×4 that you don’t need there and then.

“The moral to this story is, don’t worry about driving around looking like you’re heading into the Kruger National Park if you’re just doing a shopping run,” said Ford.

5. Drive sensibly

Aggressive acceleration and braking can dramatically increase your fuel consumption.

Maintain good observation of the road and traffic around you and try to react to changes early so that you can accelerate slower, coast early and brake gently, said Ford. It added that drivers should use cruise control or adaptive cruise control if their car is equipped with it. “Using cruise control allows the vehicle to take control of the accelerator pedal, brakes and transmission and will operate as smoothly and gently as the traffic allows – delivering more fuel economy and a smooth drive,” said Ford fuel

economy and performance attribute engineer Matthew Roberts. He added that you should never shift into Neutral when driving down a hill thinking you’ll save fuel, this is a myth, and it’s also hazardous.

6. Time to tow

When it comes to towing a trailer, you’re going to use more fuel than when you’re just driving around town or on the highway. But there are still things you can do to maximise fuel efficiency. According to Ford, travelling 10-15km/h less than the speed limit can help save fuel and help with less hard braking.

Ford added that you should always keep your trailer or caravan well maintained; low tyre pressure, worn tyres or wheel bearings can make your vehicle work harder when towing. If possible, fill up the water tank once you arrive at camp – reducing that weight whilst towing will help save on fuel.

And don’t forget to close windows and air vents to maximise the aerodynamics of what you are pulling, said Roberts.

7. Air conditioning

Hotter weather will have you reaching for the air-conditioning but switching on your vehicle’s air-con places a load on the engine (it must work harder), which will cause it to use more fuel. To help reduce the burden, Ford suggests waiting until your car is up to speed on a highway or the road before you switch on your air conditioning. This will help your engine warm up and require less ‘work’ to cool the aircon, reducing fuel consumption.

Ford added that when parking in hot weather, try to keep your vehicle in the shade as this will help the cabin stay cooler for longer, so your air-conditioning won’t have to work as hard to cool the car.

STELLALANDER-PAMPIERSTAD: The Northern Cape Department of Health has taken major steps towards addressing challenges faced by one of its health facilities in Pampierstad.

Problems at Pampier- stad health facility

Provincial Health MEC, Maruping Lekwene, recently visited one of the health facilities in Phokwane Local Municipality to convene a follow-up meeting with the Tse Di Tshetlha community safety structure as part of the continued efforts to strengthen the healthcare service delivery. According to Maruping, the health facility in the Phokwane Municipality in Pampierstad had challenges of overtime payments for staff, the clinic not operating 24 hours a day, and a lack of security at the facility. Lekwene outlined the plan of action that the department presented at the meeting. “Most of the nurses have been paid, and some will be paid their outstanding

monies. Security has been boosted, but we’re also working around the opening of the facility because it’s the CHC - a CHC must be open 24/7,” he adds. Lekwene further says that the department expects trauma cases to increase during the festive season. However, the department has prepared in advance for such challenges.

The issue of staff shortage is one of the issues that the department took time to address at the facility. According to Lekwene, the Department of Health has replaced two of the three doctors who left the facility and they are still looking for the third doctor that will join the facility.

Be aware of potential scams this festive season

STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: When looking for Christmas presents, it is important that South African consumers are aware of potential scams this festive season, says Aamir Lakhani, a strategist and researcher for Global Security.

“Given the spike in digital activity predicted over the holidays, cybercriminals, too, will be making their lists and checking them twice this year. It’s a particularly risky time of the year as shoppers of all ages flock to search engines and online channels to place orders before holiday delivery date cut-offs,” said Lakhami.

Opportunistic hackers know just how to create enticing, seasonally-appropriate lures—and even some of the simplest scams can fool adept online shoppers, added Lakhani.

Global Security provided the following list of common scams:

• Online holiday gift card scams At a time when gift card purchases spike, thieves are on the lookout for easy ways to take advantage, says Lakhani.

“Gift cards are a common vector for cybercriminals and scammers since stealing the money loaded onto them is like stealing cash: Once it’s taken, there’s virtually no way for a victim to get it back.” Some ways scammers use gift cards are: Fake pins: scammers scratch off the layer of protective coating to write down pin numbers and then “replacing” the coating with a sticker so it looks brand new. They then plug those PINs into software that sends an alert once someone has purchased and activated their gift card—and then proceed to drain all its funds. Via email: if you’ve ever received a strange email urging you to help a friend or family member with an emergency – and that email led you down the path of providing a gift card as payment – that email was most certainly a scam, said Lakhani. Account takeover attack (ATO): A cybercriminal first obtains account credentials for a particular e-commerce platform by hacking a victim. The criminal then uses this information to make purchases, often high-value electronic gift cards, which are then sent off.

• Video conferencing phishing scams With more people video calling family and friends, scammers may send victims fake video links that prompt a person to download a ‘new version’

of their conferencing software. The link will direct them to a third-party website where the user can download an installer, said the company. In some cases, the program does install the video conferencing software—but whether it does or doesn’t, it also loads a remote-

access program on the host. “This program gives scammers access to the user’s sensitive data and information, which is either sold on the Black Market or leveraged for identity theft,” said Lakhani.

• Phishing

Mobile phishing attempts are especially common for e-commerce shoppers, said Lakhani. More users than ever rely on their smartphones to make purchases. While these devices may seem less vulnerable to threats, that is actually not the case. “Online shoppers may receive fraudulent text messages that appear to come from retailers they’re familiar with, for instance.”

“These messages typically contain a link that, once clicked, redirects to a fraudulent website that looks like the retailer’s legitimate site but is designed to extract your personally identifiable information (PII),” Lakhani said.

• Vishing and Smishing

With regard to vishing, cybercriminals use phone calls to solicit personal information, relying on “social engineering” tactics to trick you into providing information such as login credentials or bank account information.

“Paradoxically, vishers often leverage our innate fear of cyber scams and attacks to pull off these attacks. For example, a voicemail message may state, “URGENT: Your bank account has been locked due to suspicious activity. Call us back immediately to restore access.” Then, when the victim calls back, they are asked to provide sensitive information that is then stolen and used maliciously, said Lakhani.

You can avoid vishing by confirming that the phone number from which you received a call or text message does, in fact, belong to the organisation it is claiming to have sent it. “Keep in mind banks and government agencies almost never contact customers or individuals to provide sensitive information,” said Lakhani. The researcher also said that they are starting to see a new scam, where they put QR codes on popular products and, make banners or marketing materials, then leave them in stores. “If a victim sees a product they like, and a sign telling them they can get the product faster or at a discounted price, they are more than likely to scan the QR code.” According to Lakhami, this leads to them being taken to a scam website or attempting to download malware.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, 18 December, police were conducting patrols in Market Street, Vryburg, when a suspicious heavily loaded vehicle was noticed. Police stopped the vehicle and members searched the vehicle. During the search, copper cables and copper rods were found at the back of the vehicle. Nor the driver or the passenger could account for the load. The copper, with a weight of 1 208 kilogram and an estimated value of R164 892.00 was confiscated and both suspects were arrested on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property. The suspects, Sipho Sigasa (53) and Phillip Matabela (36) appeared in the Vryburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday,19 December. They are remanded in custody until 30 December for a formal bail hearing. STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: The most recent SA Police crime statistics paint a disturbing picture of crime on South Africa’s roads.

Netstar highlights the importance of drivers taking precautions to protect themselves – particularly as the festive season approaches.

The recent crime statistics, released 23 November 2022, show a 23.6% jump in carjackings compared to the same period last year. In addition, hostage takings have increased significantly as criminals use techniques such as impersonating law enforcement officials to flag down unsuspecting drivers. When driving at night and being stopped by a vehicle fitted with blue lights, acknowledge the lights, by switch on your hazard lights, but only stop at a safe location such as, nearest petrol station or police. Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu- Natal encounter the most vehicle crime in the country. Nyanga in Cape Town recorded the most carjackings from April to June 2022, followed by Philippi East. The next six worst ranked areas are all in Gauteng; Moroka, Sandringham, Midrand, Vosloorus, Alexandra, and Kempton Park. In these areas and on all South African roads, motorists should remain vigilant and take steps to protect themselves and their loved ones. In the unfortunate event of a hijacking, there are still ways to minimise harm and help ensure the best possible outcome. For instance:

• Remain calm. Despite the high-stress situation, try to stay calm, so the hijackers do not lose their composure.

• Comply. Do as you are told. Surrender any valuables requested and get out of the vehicle if asked to do so.

• Say you will remove your seatbelt. Notify the

hijackers that you are removing your seatbelt, so they do not misunderstand your intentions.

• Move away from the vehicle. If asked to get out of your car, immediately get out and move as far as you can away from the vehicle.

• Leave everything. Do not try to retrieve something from the vehicle. Stolen vehicles can be recovered. Property can always be replaced. Human life is priceless.

• Ask to remove your child. If you have a baby or a young child in a car seat, ask that you be allowed to get them out of the car.

• Avoid eye contact. Assume a passive attitude, look down and do as you are told.

• Take mental notes. Remember as much information as you can: how many hijackers, their accent, any distinguishing aspects, and in which direction they left.

• Notify your tracking provider if you have one.

If you have a panic button, alert your loved ones, emergency medical services and armed response to your location. Otherwise, call the police on 08600 10111, go to the nearest house, or flag down a passing vehicle.

Always be aware of your surroundings when you are near your home. Do not hold your cell phone when waiting for the green light because your guard is down.

Also, lookout for vehicles that have been following you for some time and strangers standing and vehicles parked near your home. Make it your goal to stay safe and protect your loved ones.

Stay safe as the festive season approaches
