STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has released the upgraded series of banknotes and coins, which are expected to go into circulation from this last week.
According to the bank, the upgraded notes and coins have enhanced security features and new designs. While the banknote designs will remain largely similar to that of old, with an enhanced look and feel, the coinage has the most significant changes, now boasting ecologically inspired designs.
“The banknotes continue to pay tribute to South Africa’s first democratically elected President, Nelson Mandela, with his portrait retained on the front of the banknotes, while the Big 5 animals are now illustrated as a family on the back. “We also celebrate our constitutional democracy, with the preamble to the South African Constitution printed in microtext around Madiba’s portrait and the country’s flag featured on the front and the back of the banknotes.
“The theme of the coin series is ‘Deep ecology’, which acknowledges the interconnectedness of living organisms as an integral part of the environment. These themes are
depicted by our fauna and flora on the coin,” the SARB said. “In general, banknotes are refreshed in intervals of six to eight years and coins in intervals of 20 to 30 years.
In South Africa, the current Mandela banknote series was issued in 2012 and a commemorative series of banknotes was issued in 2018. The current coin series was issued in 1989. “The SARB does not demonetise its currency. All previously issued circulation banknotes and coins can be used as a means of trade together with the upgraded banknotes and coin. All circulation currency maintains its face value.
“Members of the public are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the upgraded banknotes and coins and to use the look, feel and tilt method to authenticate their currency. Changes to the upgraded banknotes and coins are available on the SARB website and the SARB Currency App, which is available on the Apple iStore and the Google Play Store,” the SARB said.

Dit lok nie net vlieë aan nie, maar ook goggas soos muggies en muskiete.
Hier volg die resep:
Gebruik ‘n leë 2-lt plastiekbottel.
Meng 500 ml water en een eier.
Klits dit goed saam.
Gooi in die bottel en skroef die deksel op.
Maak drie gaatjies bo aan die rand van die bottel met ‘n skerp voorwerp (groot genoeg dat die vlieë daarin kan gaan).
Maak ‘n toutjie om die nek van die bottel vas en hang dit ver van die huis af op.
En siedaar - ‘n gratis vlieëvanger.

STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: ‘n Oudleerder van Hoërskool Vryburg, Jan Geldenhuys (47), het Vrydagmiddag, 12 Mei, buite Vryburg op die Stella/Vryburgpad, in ‘n grusame tromp-op- botsing op die toneel gesterf.
Volgens polisiewoordvoerder, adjudant-offisier Tryphosa van Rooyen, het een insittende in ‘n groen Volkswagen Citi golf van Stella in die rigting van Vryburg en drie insittendes in ‘n wit Amarok voertuig van Vryburg in die rigting van Stella gery en reg van voor gebots. Van Rooyen het bevestig dat die 47-jarige bestuurder van die Volkswagen Golf op die toneel oorlede is. Volgens inligting tot Stellalander se beskikking, het die impak van die ongeluk die voorste sitplek van die Volkswagen Golf, waarin Geldenhuys gery het, tot by die agterste sitplek van die voertuig gedruk.
Die bestuurder en passasiers van die Amarok is ongedeerd. Vryburg polisie ondersoek ‘n saak van starfbare manslag. ‘n destydse klasmaat van Geldenhuys het op die ongeluk afgekom en op sosiale media die toneel as onstellend beskryf.

STELLALANDER-GANYESA: During the early morning hours of Friday, 12 May the Ganyesa police attended to a scene where four suspects were found in possession of game.
Upon arrival at the scene members were informed by security personnel that they noticed the vehicle hunting in the area. The vehicle, a light delivery van was searched and four kudu and another buck was found at the back of the vehicle. The driver of the delivery vehicle and the occupants could not produce a hunting permit upon request. Upon a further search of the vehicle two cartridges were found. The four suspects aged 21, 28, 36 and 56 years respectively were arrested on a charge of illegal hunting. The vehicle and the game were confiscated for further investigation. The suspects were expected to appear in the Ganyesa Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 15 May.
In an unrelated incident, members of Reivilo police were busy conducting a vehicle check point between Reivilo and Taung on Friday, 12 May. During the operation a white Isuzu vehicle was stopped and a kudu that was shot was found at the back of the vehicle. The explanation given by the driver of the vehicle was not to satisfaction and not the driver nor the occupants could provide a hunting permit. A case of illegal hunting was opened and the suspects aged 30, 34 and 52 years were arrested. The vehicle, kudu, a hunting rifle and 13 rounds were confiscated. The suspects are expected to appear in the Taung Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 22 May.

Police continue the fight against drugs
STELLALANDER-BLOEMHOF: On Friday, 12 May, the school safety officer of Bloemhof police were summoned to a local secondary school where young learners were found smoking dagga and police intervention was requested.
Sergeant Steve Phepheng interviewed the learners and obtained information on the supplier of the dagga.
Crime prevention members were then contacted and they all proceeded to the suppliers address. Upon arrival at the house in Boitumelong Location, the owner of the house was found with a black plastic bag containing dagga. During a thorough search of the premises, an additional seven plastic bags containing dagga and an undisclosed amount of cash were found. The 32 year old suspect was arrested on a charge of dealing in an undesirable dependence producing substance (dagga).
The dagga confiscated has an estimated street value of R9 000. The suspect appeared in the Bloemhof Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 15 May.
Vryburg: In an unrelated event, Vryburg police arrested a 30 year old male in position of Methaqualone (Mandrax). The arrest of the suspect came after members that were busy with crime prevention patrols in Colridge residential area, Vryburg received information of a suspect that was selling drugs. The suspect was found and searched and 78 Methaqualone(Mandrax) tablets were found in his possession, including an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect was arrested on a charge of dealing in an undesirable dependence producing substance (Mandrax) was opened. The estimated street value of the confiscated drugs are R11 700. The suspect appeared in the Vryburg Magistrates’ Court Monday, 15 May. The Acting District Commissioner of Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati , Brigadier Tshenolo Tlotleng, congratulated the members who ensured that the suspects were apprehended and stated that police will not turn a blind eye, especially towards those who are exposing children to drugs.

Agri NW Jongboer van die jaar
STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: Die Minister van Landbou, Thoko Didiza se begroting vir die volgende jaar fokus weereens baie meer, verkeerdelik, op die ontwikkeling van bestaansboere eerder as op die ondersteuning van kommersiële boere.
Dit is nie bestaansboere wat kos op die tafel van die meerderheid Suid-Afrikaners plaas nie, maar wel kommersiële boere.
Hoewel die minister meen dat hierdie begroting die department en bedryf sal toelaat om “voort te gaan om in die voedselsekerheid behoeftes van die land te voorsien,” noem sy ook dat slegs 9%
van die landbou-uitsette deur opkomende boere geproduseer word.
Nêrens in haar rede het sy verwys na hoe kommersiële boere, wat al jare en generasies lank kos produseer, suksesvol bygestaan word nie.
“Dit is bitter moeilik vir kommersiële boere om positief te bly wanneer die staat min belangstelling het om hulle by te staan, en die meganismes soos Onderstepoort wat hulle na bewering moet ondersteun, nie eers daarin slaag om entstowwe vir skape en perde beskikbaar te hê nie,” sê Bennie van Zyl, hoofbestuurder van TLU SA.
TLU SA verstaan dat daar belê moet word in die ontwikkeling van nuwe boere om in die aanvraag na voedsel te voorsien en het inderdaad jare gelede reeds aangebied om kennis en ervaring hieroor te deel, maar dit moet nie ten koste van die boere wees wat dit reeds onder baie moeilike omstandighede doen nie.
Die belegging wat gemaak word om opkomende boere te ondersteun, regverdig nie die uitvoere wat hulle bereik nie.
Die department het bv die afgelope jaar R50 miljoen spandeer om 124 sitrusboere te ontwikkel.
Hulle voer maar slegs ses miljoen van die 128-miljoen bokse sitrusvrugte uit.
“’n Begroting van R17 miljard strek net so ver. Wanneer die grootste gedeelte verkeerd belê word, plaas dit voedselsekerheid in die weegskaal,” sê van Zyl.
“Ons doen ‘n ernstige beroep op die
regering om weg te beweeg van die
idee van die sogenaamde ekonomiese
herstrukturering en herwinningsbeleid en
eerder aandag te gee aan markkragte wat
die winsgewendheid van kommersiële
boere – en inderdaad die beskikbaarheid
van voedsel – bepaal.”
Schools received vouchers with art competition
Each school received a Cashbuild building materials voucher to the value of R15 000 to use for any repairs or improvements needed for their school buildings or grounds.
The vouchers were handed out to all the schools at the Art- at-Heart ceremony at the refurbished Cashbuild Taung store on the 11th of May 2023. The children from the winning schools entertained everyone with singing, cultural dancing, and theatrical performances during the ceremony. Morwalela Primary School and Thuso Primary School are two of the eight schools that each received a Cashbuild building material voucher. Morwalela Primary School’s Principal, Innocentia
Lindiwe Anthony said: “This voucher is really appreciated, thank you Cashbuild. We intend tiling the verandas of the
foundation phase and intermediate blocks. We will also
be able to erect ramps around
the school,
because our school has been identified as a full-service school and these ramps will greatly benefit our learners with special needs.” The Principal of Thuso Primary School, Sello Solomon Khasu said: “We are in the process of building a library for our school, and with this voucher we will buy ceiling boards and build the roof, thank you Cashbuild.” The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school to submit their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is displayed at the ceremony and remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next six years. Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. Winners received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver, and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager’s Choice, and the overall winner of the artwork competition, was awarded to a learner from Matsheng Primary School. This award was announced on the day and the winning learner received a backpack with stationery and a trophy. The winner was also given the honour of officially opening the new store. The schools that benefitted from the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart donations were: Matsheng Primary School; St. Paul’s Primary School; Rabodigelo
Primary School; Thuso Primary School;
Marope Primary School; Lekwene Primary School; Morwalela Primary School and Moshosho Primary School. Since the Art- at-Heart campaign was launched 22 years ago, Cashbuild has helped more than 3 900 schools in Southern Africa with over R50- million worth of building materials.

STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: The National Assembly (NA) has approved the South African Sign Language (SASL) as the 12th official language during a hybrid plenary sitting recently.
The National Assembly approved the Report of the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development on the Constitution Eighteenth Amendment Bill to amend section 6 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996.
The amendment was to include South African Sign Language as an official language to promote the rights of persons who are deaf and hard of hearing. Until now, the South African Constitution provided for 11 official languages, which include Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, siSwati, Tshivenda, Xitsonga, Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa and isiZulu. “Primarily, the amendment seeks to advance the cultural acceptance of SASL, the deaf culture; ensure the realisation of the rights of persons who are deaf and hard of hearing to equal protection and benefit of the law and human dignity; and to promote inclusive and substantive equality and prevent or eliminate unfair discrimination on the ground of disability, as guaranteed by section 9 of the Constitution,” Parliament Spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo, said. The Bill was introduced and referred to the committee on January 12 2023, and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development briefed the committee on the contents of the Bill on 27 January 2023. In response to the call for public comment, the committee received 58 written submissions from individuals and organisations, with the majority of the submissions in support of the Bill. The committee noted the opposing views expressed by a few commentators, but submitted that the recognition of SASL as a 12th official language
“is an important step towards the realisation of the rights of persons who are deaf and hard of hearing”.
“Further, the committee acknowledged that SASL is not a universal language (different countries have their own sign language and regions have dialects) but submits that, in South Africa, it is in the promotion and development of SASL that the various dialects are also recognised. “In terms of section 74(4) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, a Bill that amends the Constitution may not include provisions other than constitutional amendments and matters connected with the amendments. The Committee noted that the use of South African Sign Language is mentioned in legislation, such as the Use of Official Languages Act 12 of 2012, the South African Schools Act 84 of 1996, and the Pan South African Language Board Act 59 of 1995,” Mothapo said. He emphasised that the adoption of the Bill could impact the scope and purpose of the reference to sign language in such legislation. “Relevant departments administering those and related legislation should take note of this constitutional amendment recognising SASL as an official language in terms of section 6 of the Constitution and consider whether the adoption of the Bill may require consequential amendment to associated legislation for purposes of clarifying the status of SASL as expressed in the Constitution,”
Mothapo said. The amendment was adopted without opposition in the NA. “The adoption of this constitutional amendment yesterday will bring to 12 the number of official languages in South Africa, once the President signs the Bill into law”
Water crisis at Piet Plessis and Tosca
STELLALANDER-PIET PLESSIS: According to the Constitution of South Africa, every citizen has the right to fresh drinking water.

In the case of the residents of Piet Plessis informal settlement, there are no taps or pipes with fresh running water. Residents have to walk approximately a kilometer or more with big plastic drums or any container for water, to get water. According to residents, a 1100 liter container with water only last for two days then the process to again fetch water is repeated. According to Johan Enslin from Piet Plessis, there are six boreholes in Piet Plessis of which one is at the church in the informal settlement. According to Enslin, the church has stopped providing water to the community as there were reports of damages to the pipes and borehole. Enslin further explains that the current boreholes fill water tanks, but never manage to be filled to capacity due to the great need for water for humans and animals. According to a member of the community, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that a contractor was threatened by community member and told to pay an amount of R30 000 before they can continue to drill for water.
A Community Liaison Officer (CLO) was then appointed to employ workers to assist the contractor to equip boreholes and work on the water problem.

Tosca: Stellalander has also received complaints from residents here complaining about the lack of water. According to a guesthouse owner, Adri Marx, they have to transport water from a farm for the guesthouse. Stellalander contacted councilor Nicol Muller about the water, and according to him there are three boreholes that are fully equipped. These boreholes have to pump water to the main reservoir in Tosca that will supply water to the residents of Tosca and the informal settlement. According to information a 2000 litre tank was connected to the main pipeline.
According to councilor Maryke Grobbelaar from Tosca, it seems that this connection of the 2000 liter tank can cause the major water shortage for the whole of Tosca residents. It is possible that this tank prevent that the main reservoir can be filled to capacity.
According to Grobbelaar, the rent paying businesses have constant shortage of water for days. This is a continuing problem. Grobbelaar has mentioned that the residents in the village have no running water in taps available and needs to collect water from the 2000
liter tank. According to councilor Municipal Manager Itumeleng Jonas, they are aware of the problem and that Magalies Water is the contractor attending to it.

STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: Die NG Kerk Vryburg-Wes se gemeente het Vrydagmiddag, 5 Mei heerlike samesyn beleef tydens hulle basaar.
Die feestelikheid is afgeskop met Vryburg Voorbereidingskool se Volkspele optrede. Die tafels het behoorlik gekreun onder die fyn gebak en koeke, terwyl die jongspan deelgeneem het aan ‘n kunskompetisie wat groot aftrek gekry het. Daar was ook perderitte vir die jeug wat hulle terdeë geniet het. Die hoogtepunt van die geleentheid was toe die leraar, Ds Chris van der Linde die aand byna onherkenbaar blou van die basaar uitgestap het.

Noord-Wes ope stoei
Die Noordwes Ope Stoeitoernooi is Saterdag, 6 Mei in Klerksdorp aangebied. Ses van Vryburg se stoeiers het deelgeneem en plekke oopgestoei om aan die SA -stoeitoernooi deel te neem en die Noordwes te verteenwoordig. Plaaslike stoeiers het met ses medaljes weggestap. STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: The North West University’s (NWU’s) Potchefstroom Campus can now rightly be called South Africa’s go-to tennis destination with the official opening of its clay court precinct end of Arpil.
These five new courts are supplemented by 10 hard courts and two grass courts to make the NWU Africa’s undisputed leader in providing players the best and only complete offering of tennis courts.
This, coupled with the NWU’s world class facilities, has again shown why the university is a hub of sporting excellence.
“It is not only a first for South Africa, but a first for the continent. These three surfaces are a unique one-stop shop that provides ease for our clients, whether they are from or outside the NWU. It also attracts world-class experts and athletes from around the world. The intention was always to create a facility that enhances opportunities as well as our value proposition and offerings for our students,” explained Sheldon Rostron, sport manager of the Potchefstroom Campus. “We wanted to create facilities that contribute to our greater community, and that also serve to drive the growth of tennis within our community and province. These surfaces will also help prepare our students and external users for major events”. Sheldron also said that the
university’s collaboration with the Riaan Venter Tennis Academy has resulted in a tennis boom in the local area. “We are also seeing our youth and students excelling on higher platforms. I think that is inspiring in itself and means that our intention has been felt and reached. The other aim was to create a facility that enhances our relationship with Tennis South Africa, as we are specifically focused on youth development,” added Sheldron. With the hosting of tennis events and camps, the expertise within the various sport science departments, the Centre for Health and Human Performance and the High Performance Institute, the NWU offers a unique, varied and valued tennis experience. “It is also a way for us to showcase our brand and what the NWU stands for. It is our goal and purpose to provide a sustainable economic impact in our community and we are doing that through the multitude of local and global athletes we lure here with our facilities and expertise. Through sport we will continue to work hard to make a difference to our country”.

Die veerpyltieklub bedank ook die borg vir die aand, Tokkie Ferreira Makelaars van Vryburg. Die Bee Squadspan is aangewys as die besgekleede span.
