Taking the plight of the needy to heart

BRITS POS – BRITS – Members of the Hartbeespoortdam police station on Wednesday, 28 July, joined forces with a local Non-Profit Organisation(NPO), the Zonke Anti-Drug & Abuse organisation, for an anti-bullying and sexual offences awareness campaign at Ennis Thabong Primary School in Sunway.
Learners from these families in need, were identified and showered with school shoes, socks and jerseys to keep them warm during the cold winter.
Uniforms were donated by residents of Hartbeespoortdam and Sediba Plaza. The Station Commander of Hartbeespoortdam, Colonel Willem Robbertse, emphasised that it takes a village to raise a child and that it is the responsibility of every citizen to develop social consciousness by ensuring that children are focusing on their studies and not deferred by their socio-economic conditions.
Farewell to Lieutenant Colonel Ben van Wyk
The management of the South African Police Service in Brits would like to bid farewell to one of its longest serving stalwarts, Lieutenant Colonel Ben van Wyk, who served the organisation for 42 years and retired on Friday, 30 July 2021.

BRITS POS - BRITS - Police in the province are warning members of the community to be careful when they respond to online advertisements - especially for livestock and vehicle sales.
In a recent incident, a potential client paid an amount of R100 000.00 via bank deposits to buy a minibus that was advertised on social media under the name of an auctioneer. On his way to collect his taxi, the client tried calling the seller, who agreed to meet him in Wolmaransstad, but discovered the seller had switched his phone off and could not be reached.
In another unrelated incident, a victim drove all the way from East London to Wolmaransstad to buy a Toyota Hilux, that was advertised online. He was taken to a house where he was shown the vehicle. An agreement was reached that the vehicle will be bought for R160 000.00 and the transaction was arranged for a couple of days later. On the day agreed, the victim, accompanied by his brother, met the seller inside their vehicle on the street in Wolmaransstad. Whilst waiting for the vehicle and documentation, four suspects approached them, pointed them with a firearm and proceeded to rob them of R200 000.00 cash.
The following tips might assist to prevent falling prey to scams:
Conduct research from a variety of websites.
· Look at a wide range of vehicles without feeling pressured to buy.
· View feedback from previous buyers.
Be on the lookout for online scams - Fake advertisements are appearing on genuine car sales websites, classifieds and online auction sites. These scams claim to offer used cars for lower than expected prices, but often the cars do not exist.
Before you strike up a deal you should check the car’s identity. Check for the warning signs that the vehicle car might have been stolen:
- There’s no vehicle registration document (V5C)
- The V5C has spelling mistakes, alterations or no watermark
- The name and address on the V5C don’t match the seller’s. (Ask to see their driving license, passport, or recent utility bill)
- The identifying numbers on the car don’t match the numbers on the V5C or look like they’ve been altered
- The seller has no insurance policy for the car
- Consider a private history check, you will have to pay to get this done, but a history, or data check will tell you if the vehicle has outstanding finance on it, been reported stolen, been in a serious accident and has the correct mileage.
- There are various companies that offer this service online - including the AA and RAC. Make sure that whatever company you choose take responsibility for the accuracy of information they supply.
· Don’t meet strangers at your home or in strictly residential areas. Instead, meet in a nearby shopping area, a grocery store, fast food restaurant parking lot or at the Police Station. Make sure the area is busy and filled with lots of people. Daytime is better. If you must meet after dark, make sure the area is well lit and there are lots of people around.
· It’s a good idea to bring a friend, or even two. Let other friends or family know of your plans. Have them check on you at a specific time after the meeting if you don’t call them first.
· Be sure to have your cell phone with you.
· If you are selling/buying something and become suspicious of the buyer/
seller—for any reason—don’t let them in your car - leave immediately! Your safety is more important than being polite.
· Do not carry a large amount of cash with you and leave immediately if the advertised product is not at the agreed place.
· If you are robbed, give the suspects the property they demand; your life is more valuable than your property.

BRITS POS – BRITS - Three security guards were on duty on Saturday, 1 August, at a business in Elandsdrift, Mooinooi.
BRITS POS – BRITS - A woman travelled by car to a business in Centreville, Letlhabile to seek mechanical assistance for her vehicle on Thursday, 29 July around 19:00.
The mechanic could not be found and as she went back to her vehicle, two men approached her, one armed with a firearm and they forcefully took her car’s keys and carjacked her vehicle.
“A case of carjacking was registered at the Letlhabile
police station,” confirmed Maria Nkabinde, SAPS spokesperson, “and no one has been apprehended.”
Anyone with information that might lead to the apprehension of the suspects can contact Captain Manota of Letlhabile Detectives on 082 370 2617.

Four armed men, one with a firearm and the others wielding knives, suddenly entered the premises and a shot was fired into the ground. The suspects tied the victims up and robbed them of their cellphones and then gained access to the offices by breaking the doors down. The suspects took four laptops, TV monitors and also office- and electrical kitchen
equipment. “We can confirm that a case of business robbery was opened at the Mooinooi police station. The suspects are still at large,” says Maria Nkabinde, SAPS spokesperson. Anyone with information that might lead to the apprehension of the suspects can contact Lieutenant Colonel Mojalefa Nkosi of Mooinooi Detectives on 060 987 5508.
BRITS POS – BRITS - On Friday, 30 July around midday, two men were delivering chickens to businesses in Slaagboom and surrounding areas and on their way to another delivery point, their vehicle was forced off the road by three armed men in a vehicle.
The victims were held at gunpoint and the suspects took cellphones, an undisclosed amount of cash and the balance of the chickens to be delivered. The suspects fled the scene in their vehicle.
“A case of armed robbery was registered at the Bedwang police station,” says Maria Nkabinde, SAPS spokesperson, “and the suspects are still at large.”

Hard lockdowns over more than a year now have seen extended family gatherings being few and far between, and as a result more and more families are considering going away together to make up for lost time. But some have yet to take the plunge.
Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group Hotels and Resorts says that some parents find it tough to plan a trip with small children, let alone the added stress of travelling with their ageing parents too.
He adds that whilst the idea may sound too overwhelming, it’s well worth investigating and implementing. “Your folks will not be here forever (and how do we know that we will still be here?) and there is no better time to make magical, lasting memories with them. Plus, time with their grandparents is possibly one of the greatest gifts you can give your children! And, you will have additional pairs of hands to help.”
Shaun offers some tips on how to ensure that your multi-generational holiday is stress-free and fabulous:
• Choose the right destination: A resort is always a popular choice, and for good reason! It caters for the young and the not- so-young. It also caters for the active (think long, leisurely walks, lawn bowls and challenging hikes), and the not-so-active (think Bingo or lazing around the pool).
Childcare is also available at most resorts which is an extra (and priceless) bonus.
• Choose the right type of accommodation:
Depending on the ages of your children, self-catering may well be more convenient, as it offers more flexibility and space.
If you worried that your kids may drive your parents up the wall, you may want to consider a blended accommodation option, whereby your parents book into the main hotel, and you and the kids opt for self- catering at the same resort.
• Choose the right mode of transport: Rather
than squashing into one smaller car, consider taking two vehicles (if this is a viable option), or hire one larger vehicle (one bigger car will use less fuel than two cars, and you’ll save on toll fees, where applicable). It’s also a lot more fun to travel together, and what’s a road trip if you’re not travelling in the same car?
• Plan for plenty of bathroom breaks:
Decide ahead of time where the designated
“stretch-your-legs” stops are going to be.
Be mindful that while some travellers may be able to go for hours without stopping, grandparents and smaller children will probably need to stop more often. Plan in advance as to when and where these breaks will happen, to avoid any anxiety before the holiday has even begun.
• Plan meals: Most elderly people don’t like surprises and uncertainty. Having a set routine and plan for meals let’s your parents predict and plan their day, which makes them feel safe and stable (same goes for smaller children). So, if you’re going the self-catering route, find out what equipment is provided, and then plan meals accordingly. Also, don’t be afraid to do a cooking roster. Let your parents share the load – they’ll love to help!
• Book everything in advance: While
“winging it” may work for some things, trying to last-minute-dot-com a multi- generational holiday is likely to cause unnecessary stress. Instead, rather plan everything ahead of time. This includes the booking of restaurants and activities.
“Don’t regret the trips you didn’t take with your parents. All you’ll have left once they’re gone are the magical, lasting memories - so make them count and book that trip with them today!” Shaun concludes.

Mature planted trees lining the streets in Elandsrand are being cut down on a daily basis by woodcutters. These trees were planted on sidewalks in Elandsrand for their aesthetic value and to provide shade to pedestrians, but are now being vandalized and unlawfully destructed by woodcutters in broad daylight and not only branches, but whole trees are cut down for firewood. The indigenous trees in the koppies in the area have long been subject to this total destruction.

BRITS POS – BRITS - On Tuesday, 3 August, two vehicles were involved in an accident at the traffic lights at Brits Mall on Hendrik Verwoerd Avenue (R511).
The seriously injured patient was stabilised by Hartbeespoort Emergency Medical Services’ paramedics (HEMS) on the scene and then rushed to a helipad at a local hospital Brits where the patient was airlifted with an ambulance helicopter to a specialised treatment hospital. BRITS POS – BRITS - SPAR has announced the new dates for the six races in the 2021 SPAR 10km Grand Prix series.

Each race will be by invitation only, and will be limited to 250 runners. Because there were no races in 2020, this year there will be no time incentive bonus points. However, Grand Prix points will be awarded to the first 25 runners home in the open category, and not the first 20, as in previous years. There will also be an additional age group category, namely for runners over 70.
Strict Covid-19 protocols will be followed at all the races, and no spectators will be allowed. However, the races will be live-streamed and runners can be tracked live using the SPORTSPLITS
There is substantial prize money on offer, amounting to a total of two million Rand. The winner of the SPAR Grand Prix after the six races will take home a cheque for R185 000.
One of the benefits of the revised calendar is that the SPAR Grand Prix Series starts two weeks after the end of the 2020 Olympics. This means that runners who competed in Tokyo can return in time to compete in Pietermaritzburg and the remaining of the SPAR Grand Prix races.

BRITS POS – Good news is that the longest running series of tournaments on the Sunshine Tour, The Vodacom Origins of Golf series is back on the Tour’s schedule in 2021 and 2022.
The five-tournament series will tee off in August, with the final tournament set to be played in 2022 and with a total of R5 million in prize money on offer throughout the series.
The return of the popular pro-am series is a major boost for the Sunshine Tour. Since it first teed off in 2004, the Vodacom Origins of Golf series has been the backbone of the Sunshine Tour’s winter schedule and has provided stars such as Louis Oosthuizen, George Coetzee, Branden Grace and Justin Harding with some of their earliest professional titles.
It has supported the work of the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) with golf clinics at every tournament throughout the country and helped to raise millions for charity through its support of amongst others The Smile Foundation, the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Foundation, New Beginnings and several other charities, and supported many of the Sunshine Tour’s development and charity initiatives over the years.
The series will tee off at De Zalze Golf Estate from 4-6 August 2021. It will then travel to Sishen Golf Club from 26-28 August, followed by Durban Country Club from 16-18 September, and Humewood Golf Club from 1-3 October. The final will be played in 2022 with the date and venue to be announced in due course.
Jaco Beukes, Chief Executive of FLOOID, the rights owners of the Vodacom Origins of Golf series, confirmed that the first tournament at De Zalze Golf Club will not feature the traditional pro- am element as an ongoing precaution in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Jamestown is 58km suid van Aliwal- Noord in die Oos Kaap geleë, ‘n distrik wat bekend is vir sy skaap-, bees- en koringboerdery.
In die Jaaroud-afdeling vlieg die duiwe teen ‘n spoed van 1326m.p.m en in die Ope-afdeling teen 1339m.p.m.

Bokke seëvier in tweede toets
BRITS POS – BRITS – ‘n Paar goeie tweede helfte drieë van Makazole Mapimpi en Lukhanyo Am het die Springbokke Saterdag (31 Julie) met 27-9 laat seëvier in die tweede toets teen die Britse en Ierse Leeus in Kaapstad.
Die toets met skynbaar eindelose TMO verwysings en geelkaarte het die Bokke se telling in die reeks gelykop laat eindig op 1-1. Duhan van der Merwe het ‘n geelkaart gekry vir ‘n vieslike pooitjie op Cheslin Kolbe, terwyl Kolbe gelukkig was om nie
‘n rooikaart te kry tydens ‘n doodvat op Conor Murray wat in die lug was. Nadat humeure opgevlam het en die skeidsregter tussenbeide moes tree, was die Bokke uiteindelik beloon deur ‘n strafskop wat Handre Pollard oorgeskop het om die Bokke met 3-0 te laat voorloop.
Wanneer die Leeus wel die bal in die hande gekry het, het hulle gewys hoe gevaarlik hulle was. Die Bokke het een van hulle groot wapens, Pieter-Steph du Toit, in die 21ste minuut as gevolg van
‘n besering verloor. Biggar van die Britse en Ierse Leeus het sy derde strafskop oorgeskop om die telling 9-6 te maak. Die Bok-vleuel Mapimpi het ‘n beweging
deurgevat en met ‘n uitstekende doel geëindig. Die Leeus het toe weer teruggeval na hulle skop wedstryd. Die Bokke het ook toe begin om die skopskoen in te lê. Die Bokke se aanslag het begin na die eerste uur toe ‘n maalbeweging vir omtrent 20 meter vorentoe beweeg het voordat O’Keeffe, die skeidsregter, die voordeel toegestaan het. Lukhanyo Am het ook die resies gewen terwyl die bal perfek in die lug gehou was waarna hy oor die doellyn gegaan het en die drie toegestaan is. Pollard het toe weer die Bokke laat voorloop met 18-9. Nog ‘n doelskop van Pollard het die Bokke met 21-9 laat voorloop. Die Leeus het geen punte in die tweede helfte aangeteken nie, terwyl Pollard punte met sy vyfde strafdoel aangeteken het. Volgende Saterdag se beslissende wedstryd wat ook in die Kaap gespeel gaan word, beloof om ‘n titaniese stryd te wees.
Makazole Mapimpi wat mooi onder die hangende bal inkom en doellyn toe gegaan het.

was dit onlangs ‘n besondere dag toe dié pappas hulle daaglikse kakie-klere en vellies moes verruil vir die mooiste Superhero-uitrustings - want, ‘n ‘Superprinses’ het mos natuurlik ’n ‘Superhero Pappa’.
“En die pappas het op die dag geskitter met hulle danspassies, fiksheid, saam lag en baie pret,” vertel Ané Erasmus, eienaar van Ané Erasmus Dans Ateljee.
“Dit was waarlik ‘n kosbare geleentheid
en ‘n dag waar spesiale herinneringe deur elke pappa en dogter vir altyd gekoester sal word.”
Ané bedank ook elke pappa en ballerina wat bygedra het om die dag spesiaal te maak.
