Piet Hayward (79) en sy eggenoot Anita, het etlike jare op die plaas Elpe by Louwna geboer. Piet was ook bekend in perderit- kringe. Piet en Anita, wat in 2021 hulle goue bruilof gevier het, het ongeveer drie jaar gelede verhuis na Kimberley, weens Piet se gesondheid wat verswak het. Piet laat sy eggenoot Anita, seuns Bertus, Hardus en sy eggenoot Anneke, skoondogter Esther en sewe kleinkinders agter. Lede van Vryburg VLV het op Woensdag (18 Mei) hulle kennis rondom demonstrasies gedeel.
Adila Theunissen demonstreer hoe blomme van plastiekhouers gemaak word. Die rante word gekrul deur dit effens in ‘n gasvlam te verhit. Dele word met ‘n gomgeweer in plek gehou.
Esta Twigge demonstreer hoe vingerhekelwerk gedoen word.

Sy verskaf ook wenke oor raming.
Lede het tydens die byeenkoms turkoois gedra om aandag te vestig op die behoeftes van bejaardes van 15 Mei tot 15 Junie. Lede gaan in Junie inwoners en personeel van Rusoord Vryburg bederf tydens die Tooi Turkoois-veldtog (lees elders meer oor die veldtog).

Verskeie inwoners in die Bray, Pomfret en Tosca omgewing is sedert Woensdag (18 Mei) vir vier dae kragloos, weens sabotasie by die elektriese substasie op Pomfret.
Volgens Nicol Muller, DA-raadslid in die Kagisano-Molopo munisipaliteit, is 14 000 liter olie uit die transformator gesteel. Volgens Muller is ‘n ander transformator ook by Pomfret, ongeveer
‘n maand gelede, se olie en koper gesteel wat dit heeltemal onherstelbaar laat.
Muller het genoem dat Eskom deur ‘n geweldige groot proses gegaan het om die liters olie wat gesteel is, te vervang.
Eskom sou Maandag (23 Mei) die herstelde transformator aanskakel en die dele wat vir vier dae sonder elektrisiteit is, met krag voorsien. Sedert die diefstal, is elektrisiteit van Stella geringvoer vir ander dele wat ook geaffekteer is. Dié dele sal ook stelselmatig weer aan die substasie se kragtoevoer gekoppel word.
Plaaslike Polisiewoordvoerder, sersant Tryphosa van Rooyen het bevestig dat ‘n saak van beskadiging van noodsaaklike infrastruktuur op Woensdag geopen is.
Niemand is nog in hegtenis geneem nie en die ondersoek duur voort.

STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: Meer as 14 000 inwoners in Bray, teen die Moloporivier, se krane is vir maande droog.
Water word vir ‘n uur lank elke vier dae aan inwoners en diere voorsien. Meer as 500 RDP-huise word bewoon, met geen watertoevoer nie. Die inwoners, wat langs ‘n rivier vol water woon, moet etlike kilometers na die naaste kraan loop met die hoop om water te kry. Boere in die omgewing word nou reeds daagliks deur die gemeenskap genader vir water. Volgens die voorsitter van die boerevereniging, WF du Preez, sukkel Bray al lank met die water.
WF noem dat Sedibeng water verantwoordelik is om water te voorsien, maar wanneer hulle gekontak word, word vertel dat hulle bankrot is. ‘n Voormalige werknemer van Sedibeng, France Toba, woon ook in Bray en vertel dat hy vir 10 jaar die water operateur vir Sedibeng in Bray was.
Volgens France is vyf boorgate in 2016 in Bray vir meer as R20 miljoen volledig toegerus met pype, pompe en Lister enjins.
France vertel dat al vyf boorgate na behore water gepomp het tot 2018 toe hy bedank het. France vertel verder dat Sedibeng water verantwoordelik is om die na die vyf boorgate om te sien, maar in 2020 is drie van die boorgate se pype, pomope en Lister enjins gesteel. Stellalander kon geen bevestiging kry of daar wel ‘n diefstal saak by die polisie aangegee is nie.
Dit laat Bray tans met twee boorgate wat 1.5 liter water per sekonde pomp wat nie naastenby genoeg is vir die aantal mense en dier wat in Bray woon nie. Besigheidseienaar op Bray en suster by die plaaslike hospitaal, Annemarie Janse van Rensburg vertel dat die hospitaal vir meer as ‘n maand geen water het nie. Water was altyd met ‘n waterkar aangekry hospitaal toe, maar dit het ook gestop. Die hospitaal kan geen medisyne meng vir pasiënte nie.
“’n Kind het op n dag by die hospitaal na my bottel water gegryp wat ek van die plaas af bring en het onophoudelik daarvan gedrink.
STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: Vryburg SAPS school safety officer in partnership with the CPF, department of community safety, department of social development, department of correctional services and department of health visited Modisakoma primary school on Tuesday (17 May).
The outreach was to address bullying and substance abuse amongst grade 5 to grade 7 learners. Social worker, Portia Pedenyane stated that learners come to school from different environments and backgrounds.
She added that it does not matter where learners start, but rather the decision where they will finish and what they will achieve. She urged learners to start working on their future
to achieve greatness and not be in conflict with the law. In his address, Mosala Seobi of Dept of Correctional Services told learners that it all starts with respect. He urged the learners to become respectful people in everything they do. Samuel Ramokgadi, a professional nurse from the Dept of Health, spoke about substances abuse and its effects on the human body. He explained how it affects the normal function of their internal
organs and influences the performance of the brain. The SAPS Junior Station commander of Vryburg, Otlotleng Mogokonyane, a grade 10 learner of Vryburg High School, told learners that just because all people are different, it does not mean people should be treated bad. She stated
that learners go to school to be taught and not to be bullied. She urged her peers to respect each other and allow each other to be taught in a safe and secure environment. She closed in saying that learners should focus on what they want to achieve in life. (Images: supplied)

Wêreld se oudste vrou van Noordwes
STELLALANDER-OTTOSDAL: Die wêreld se oudste vrou is van Noordwes in Suid-Afrika!
Johanna Mazibuko is glo die wêreld se oudste mens, nadat sy verlede Woensdag (11 Mei) 128 jaar oud geword het.
Mazibuko het identifikasie dokumente wat bevestig dat sy in 1894 gebore is. Sy is egter nog nie amptelik deur die Guinness-wêreldrekord erken nie. Mazibuko, wie tans in Jouberton, Klerksdorp woon, sê sy is op ‘n mielieplaas in Ottosdal in Noordwes gebore en is die oudste van 12 kinders. Sy sê hulle het goed gelewe op die plaas en het geen problem gehad nie. Sy vertel dat hulle wel een jaar ‘n springkaanplaag gehad het en het selfs van die groot springkane gebraai wat soos vleis geproe het. Sy het sedertdien die Britse kolonialisme, apartheid en twee wêreldoorloë
oorleef. Mazibuko is met ‘n ouer man getroud, nadat sy eerste vrou oorlede is. Hy het ‘n perdekar en koeie gehad wat sy gemelk het en botter gemaak het om te verkoop. Johanna het self vars melk gedrink en wilde spinasie geëet wat gehelp het om die rype ouderdom van 128 te word. Sy het agt kinders, waarvan slegs twee nog lewendig is.
Sy het ook ‘n versameling van 50 kleinkinders en agterkleinkinders. Na sy getroud is, het Johanna al die jare gewerk en geld verdien as ‘n huiswerker op plase. Mazibuko het haar verjaarsdag saam met vriende en familie gevier. (Foto: verskaf)

STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: Die jaarlikse Tooi Turkoois vir Bejaardes- inisiatief is van 15 Mei tot 15 Junie.
Alle Suid-Afrikaners word genooi om hulself, hul strate en dorpe in turkoois te tooi vir bejaardes. Die hoofdoel van dié projek is om fondse in te samel vir bejaarde ondersteuning.
Tooi Turkoois skep ook die geleentheid om kritieke aspekte rondom bejaardes uit te lig en aan te spreek. Die sigbare deel van die veldtog duur vanaf 15 Mei – wat Internasionale Familiedag is – tot 15 Junie – wat die Wêreld Bewustheidsdag vir Bejaardemishandeling is.
Weens Covid-19 was die afgelope twee jaar ‘n uitdaging vir bejaardes. In afsondering was hulle sonder die lag en drukkies van hul geliefdes.
Daar was maande aaneen geen besoeke van kinders, familie en vriende. Gemeenskappe gaan kleiner geleenthede hou om bejaardes te bederf. Die fokus is vanjaar op die Word Warm- projek. Tooi Turkoois se doel in 2022 is om die winterkoue vir dié wat blootgestel is, te verlig deur ’n verskeidenheid items, wat mense help om warm te word, te skenk aan dié in nood.
Dit sluit die volgende items in: truie, serpe, baadjies, handskoene, langbroeke, kouse en skoene, musse, komberse, warm sop of ’n bord kos. Daar is ongelooflike groot waardering en dankbaarheid vir die Tooi Turkoois-veldtog wat deur die Nederduitsch Hervormende Kerk van Afrika gelei word. Turkoois bo!

STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: You’ve probably seen reports about Monekypox being detected in Italy and Sweden and cases being investigated in the United States and Canada.
But what exactly is it? Cases of Monkeypox had been reported in at least 15 countries by Sunday (22 May), including Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands. The World Health Organization (WHO) says the virus is not endemic in many of those countries. Cases of Monkeypox have been detected in various parts of Europe and North America, including, the UK, Portugal, Spain, Canada and the United States. Most of the 92 cases recorded by WHO by Saturday (21 May) had been reported in Britain, Spain and Portugal.
No deaths have been recorded so far.
The World Health Organization said it expects to identify more cases of monkeypox as it expands surveillance in countries where the disease is not typically found. Monkeypox is a virus from the same family as smallpox. It was first documented in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 1970s and primarily came from animal-to-human transmission. So far, two primary strains of the virus have been identified, the Congo strain - which has a 10% mortality rate, and the milder West African strain, which has a 1% mortality rate. The recent cases in the UK have all been the West African strain.
What does it look like and how does it spread?
The virus can be identified by a distinctive bumpy rash and the presence of a fever. The early symptoms include swelling of lymph nodes and general flu-like symptoms, such as headaches and lack of energy. The incubation period of the disease ranges from five to 21 days and the symptoms usually last between two to four weeks. While animal-to-human transmission is more common, human-to-human transmission is possible and occurs through contact with bodily fluids, lesions, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials. How is it treated?
There is currently no
known specific treatment for Monkeypox, but the smallpox vaccinia vaccine has been shown to be effective in preventing the virus. In 2019, a newer version of this vaccine was approved for Monkeypox, but it is not widely available according to the WHO.
The spread has likely occurred because of the easing of travel restrictions after COVID and while experts have said it is not likely to cause the same scale of outbreak, it is important to be vigilant. “Available information suggests that human-to-human transmission is occurring among people in close physical contact with cases who are symptomatic”, the agency added. “What seems to be happening now is that it has got into the population as a sexual form, as a genital form, and is being spread as are sexually transmitted infections, which has amplified its transmission around the world,” WHO official David Heymann, an infectious disease specialist, told Reuters. He said close contact was the key transmission route, as lesions typical of the disease are very infectious. For example, parents caring for sick children are at risk, as are health workers, which is why some countries have started inoculating teams treating Monkeypox patients using vaccines for smallpox, a related virus. Many of the current cases have been identified at sexual health clinics.
He stressed that the Monkeypox outbreak did not resemble the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic because it does not transmit as easily.
Those who suspect they may have been exposed or who show symptoms including bumpy rash and fever, should avoid close contact with others, he said. “There are vaccines available, but the most important message is, you can protect yourself,” he added

STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: Noordwes inwoners het onlangs gebuk gegaan onder swerms van die klein groen stinkgogga wat orals in hulle huise, wasgoed, tuine, dorpe en plase aangetref is.
Die goggas veroorsaak geen gewasskade op plase nie, maar hulle kruip orals in vensterrame en deurkosyne weg.
Inwoners het wolke van gif gespuit om hierdie plaag te beheer. Marietjie Strydom van Vryburg sê hulle weet al die goggatjies maak so een keer per jaar hul verskyning wanneer hulle hitte soek. “Maar dit was vanjaar baie erg. My mure was oortrek. Ek het maar die ligte afgesit sover moontlik om hulle nie te lok nie.”
Cindy Garnett en haar gesin boer tussen Vryburg en Lykso. Sy sê sy het hordes van die goggatjies op haar wasgoed gehad. “Daar het swerms verby ons gevlieg en hulle het oral ingeklim. Wanneer ons vensters oopmaak het die hordes
goggatjies afgeval. Dit was nog nooit so erg soos vanjaar nie.”
Dr. Schalk Schoeman, entomoloog by die makadamia- kwekersvereniging van Suid-Afrika (Samac) sê die klein groen goggatjies is van die genus Piezodoris. Hulle is bekend daarvoor dat hulle in hordes voorkom. “’n Paar jaar gelede, ook die tyd van die jaar, het ’n magdom goggatjies in die makadamiaboorde in die Laeveld ingetrek. Die boere was histeries, maar daar was gelukkig geen kommersiële skade nie, want hul bekke is te kort om deur die doppe van die neute te dring.” Hy sê die groter stinkgoggas veroorsaak jaarliks skade van meer as R100 miljoen aan makadamianeute.
Schoeman sê meer navorsing oor die goggatjies is nodig. Tans is dit amper onmoontlik om te bepaal presies wanneer uitbrekings gaan voorkom en hoe lank hul lewensiklus is. “Ek vermoed hulle soek nou plek om te oorwinter, soos wat kakkerlakke maak. Hulle soek plekke waar hul bors en rug aan ’n oppervlak kan raak en dan raak hulle rustig. Hulle sal daar bly vir die winter totdat dit weer warmer is. Dit verklaar hoekom mense so baie van hulle sien op deurkosyne en vensterrame,” sê Schoeman. Hy vermoed die nat somerseisoen was die oorsaak van die groot uitbreking.
Dr. Gerhard Verdoorn, bedryfsbestuurder by Croplife SA, sê sedert daar so baie reën begin val het, het die insekbevolking ontplof. “Ons sien goggas wat ons 30 jaar laas gesien het, soos die groot larwe van die patatadder en groen druiwewurms.” Schoeman sê dis nie nodig om gif te spuit nie. Die stinkgoggas sal ’n week of twee in die veld wees en dan weer aanbeweeg. Dan sal dit jare wees voordat daar so ’n groot uitbreking is. “Maar ek besef so iets in jou huis is nie aangenaam nie. Daarvoor is enige gif met peretroïd ideaal. ”Hy vermoed dat hulle dalk soos besies van kleur verander om aan te pas by die seisoen. Hoewel hulle heldergroen is, is van die goggatjies se doppies besig om te verbruin, wat daarop dui dat hulle gereed maak vir die winter. Buiten die heldergroen kleur is die stinkgoggastjies natuurlik ook bekend vir die skerp reuk wat hulle afskei wanneer hulle bedreig word of doodgaan. Inwoners van Noordwes sê daar is oliekolletjies oral waar die dooie goggatjies lê of waar op hulle getrap is. “Dis weens die jodiumagtige stof wat hulle afskei. As jy dit op jou hande kry, sal dit geel raak,” vertel Schoeman. ’n Inwoner van Stella vertel dat hul hoenders wat vry rondloop, gemaai het onder die goggas. Schoeman sê dit maak sin aangesien die goggatjies hoë proteïenvlakke het en goeie hoenderkos sal wees.

Die beste gees het aan die span van VEC gegaan. Daar word beoog om op 10 Junie weer ‘n besigheidsliga- aand te hou. Die Suid-Afrikaanse JKA karate kampioenskappe is gehou op Vrydag (20 Mei) en Saterdag (21 Mei) in die Standardbank arena in Ellispark, Johannesburg. Daar was ongeveer 3600 deelnemers oor die twee dae.

STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: There was a surprise awaiting the South African Cross Country riders, when they arrived at Ganyesa’s, 55 kilometres north-west of Vryburg on Saturday (21 May) for Round 3 in the SA Cross Country.
The normally arid semi desert of the Northwest Province was far from hot and dry as unseasonal cold, damp and muddy conditions prevailed. With a fantastic venue set out by farm owner, Wim Scholtz, and run by the efficient KZN Racing team, the stage was set for an emphatic weekend of racing.
What prevailed was a battle of the KTM giants as Bradley Cox fought back to defeat upstart former motocrosser Kerim Fitz-Gerald for the win.
250cc OR2 class Red Bull KTM rider Fitz-Gerald opened the action with the fastest run in Friday’s (20 May) time trial from Cox’s open class OR1 bike, Brett Swanepoel’s OR2 Husqvarna, MCA Honda OR3 lad Peter Karam, Scott Heygate’s OR2 Factory KTM and Kawasaki OR1 man Mike Pentecost.
KTM star Cox then moved ahead of Fitz-Gerald as the two KTMs diced hard up front on Saturday morning with the others holding a watching brief.
But Fitz-Gerald emerged 42 seconds clear of Cox at the end of lap 3 and extended that to 48 seconds following the fourth tour. Cox however, struck back when Fitz-Gerald made a mistake and took a tumble. So Brad took a comeback win after missing the previous race to injury and re-ignite his championship charge with his second overall victory of the season. He ultimately beat Fitz-Gerald by a minute and 33 seconds. Brett Swanepoel was always there to pick up the pieces on his factory Husqvarna as he ended up a couple minutes adrift in third.
Third in 350 cc OR2, Zambian KTM rider Scott Heygate was fourth overall. OR3 trio, Peter Karam took a welcome maiden win for the returning Honda team from Matthew Wilson and Ryan Pelser’s KTMs. Kenny Gilbert was crushing in Senior victory in ninth overall aboard his Pepson Plastics Scottish Cables Motul Kawasaki as Jaycee Nienaber closed off the top ten on his OR1 Pepson Plastics Spherical Logistics Kawasaki.
In the classes, Cox took OR1 from Pentecost and Nienaber in his guest Kawasaki outing, Husqvarna newcomer Michael Docherty and Hayden Louw on a Yamaha. Always in the hunt, Fitz-Gerald took his maiden Cross Country class win from Brett Swanepoel, Heygate, Erik Merry’s Husqvarna and KTM rider Kyle Eggar in OR2. Peter Karam took a massive maiden National class win in OR3 for Honda from KTM Factory rider Wilson, Pelser, Taki Bogiages’ Pespson Motul Kawasaki, Haydn Cole’s Sleepover CIT Honda and John Botha’s Franchise Co. CIT Kawasaki. Kenny Gilbert dominated Seniors on his Kawasaki from Wade Blaauw’s Sleepover CIT Honda, Marco Cocci’s Yamaha, Ronald Venter and Alain du Toit on a Husqvarna. Warrick van Schalkwyk made it a Kawasaki double in Masters from Husqvarna trio, Greg Nairn, Mielies Le Roux, Wayne Farmer and Martin Poole. Derek Karam won High School on his KTM to make it a family double from Husqvarna duo Wian Wentzel and Cobus Bester and Rory Donaldson and Ross Ramseyer’s KTMs. Brandon Clarke’s Husqvarna took primary school 85cc honours from Bruno Niebuhr and Murray Smith’s KTMs and Husqvarna duo AJ Louw and Franco Fourie and Werner Kleinhans and GJ Coetzee made it a Husqvarna 1-2 in the baby 65cc class from Jake Pretorius’ Kawasaki, Matthew Meyer on a Gas Gas and Liam Scheepers’ Husqvarna. The Trademore Group South African Cross Country will remain up north for the GXCC-run fourth round in Carletonville on 9 July.
