A successful dance under the aus- 11ices of the United Hebrew Schools of Johannesburg was held at the H.O.n.
Hall on Wednesday, June 24.
This function was in honour of thos who assisted in making a success of the recent Talmud Torah Sunday House to House Collection. About 360 peopl danced to the strains of Gaby Peimer's Orchestra, and Mr. Michael H. Kam ably carried out the duties of D.C. Dr. J.
L. Landau (Chief Rabbi), addressed the gathering on the important and valuable work the United Hebrew Schools wer doing, and expressed the sincere thanks of the council of this institution to all those who had assisted in the collection on June 7. Pr sentations were made to the most successful conveners and can- vassers, by Mrs. L. H. Penn, wife of the Hon. Secretary of the United Heb1·ew Schools, and were awarded to the fol- lowing: Mrs. J. The Synagogue was tastefully decor- ated and the Rev. S. Backon officiated at the ceremony. MiRR Ethel Hirschmann, sister of the bride, acted as maid of honour, and the Misses Rix Agranat and Eileen Herzen- berg were the bridesmaids. Dr. A. Miller, of Johannesburg, canied out the duties of best man, and the canopy-bearers were Dr. J. Hofman, Dr. H. Epstein, Mr. W. Agranat, and Mr. S. Eliason.

They were married on June 19, 1906, Lady Oppenheimer being the daughter of the late

Sir Ernest has over a long period of years been intimately as- sociated with the diamond industry in South Africa and has devoted a great deal of attention in recent years to the solution of the prob- lems of production and marketing which the industry has had to face.
He has been chairman of De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., since 1930, and is chairman of the Anglo- American Corporation, the Consoli- dated Diamonds of South-West Africa and a director of Barclays
Some 300 guests attended the subse- quent reception at the Town Hall. Th~ • toast of the bride and bridegroom was proposed by Dr. MacGregor, that of the parents by the Mayor of Potchefstroorn.
