Richard Crooks-A Great Tenor
Tremendous enthusiasm prevailed on Sunday night at the City Hall when a packed audience greeted Richard Crooks, the celebrated singer, upon his first appearance on the con- cert platform in South Africa.
From the first note onward the ar- tist proved himself to be the pos- sessor of a magnificent voice which he uses with great intelligence and perfect timing. Crooks is not only a fine interpreter of the sentimental song, for which he is beloved by thou- sands of people, but he is also the supreme artist who sings operatic airs and ballads with consummate skill. Not often has such en- thusiasm prevailed during a recital in Johannesburg .
The same enthusiastic applause greeted Richard Crooks at his con- cert on Thursday evening, and the City Hall is likely to be again over- flowing with a huge audience on Sun- day night, when he gives his third recital.
Thrilling Film at Colosseum
Featuring "Wings of the Navy," a new Warner Bros.' thriller, the Colosseum Theatre is presenting a bumper programme this week. George Brent and Olivia de Havilland, at the head of the cast, give excellent per- formances, and are ably supported by Frank McHu h and many others.
The interesting programme also in- cludes Walt Disney's long-awaited
'Ferdinand the Bull," an informative travelogue, and Miss Mary Skeaping assisted by Charles Manning and the orchestra in "The Ballet." The next attraction at this theatre will be Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer in "Love Affair."
Comedy at the Metro
Scintillating humour, bright action, and buoyant comedy come to the Metro Theatre this week, with James Stewart and Claudette Colbert in a dizzy whirl of laughter entitled "It's a Wonderful World." The plot is a clever one, the cast is well-chosen, and many other notable features go to make this film one of Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer' greatest triumphs in the com dy • ph r .
Spectacular Film at the Plaza
After its smashing success last week, "Union Pacific," Paramount's mighty epic, continues to show to packed houses at the Plaza Theatre this week. With Joel McCrea and Barbara Stanwyck in the main roles, this magnificent drama tells of the building of America's famous trans- continental railway. The supporting cast includes Akim Tamiroff, Robert Preston, Brian Donlevy, Lynne Over- man and nearly ten thousand others.
This film should be the attraction at the Plaza for some weeks to come.
