--WOMEN URGED TO JOIN UNION DEFENCE FORCES
URGENT APPEAL MADE BY COLONEL WERDMULLER
"QUR soldiers cannot f~ght alone," said Colonel G. C. G.
Werdmuller, the Director for Re- cruiting; r cently. "Unless the men at the front have adequate support at the base their sacrifices are in vain. The !women ·of South Africa can give them that support by join- ing the W.A . .A.S. or the W • .A.A.Ji'.
They must stand by their men.
Thousands are already on the job, but thousands more are needed to free the men who are tied down to oase of fices."
The decision of th Union Def enc JJepartment to enli t the service of
\\omen in anti-aircraft an<l search- light batterie. has biought the ".ack- ack" very mucl into ti1e news r - cently. 'I'he greate:-;t importance has been attached to adequate "ack-ack"
defences for the Union coast town and aerodromes. This country is fol- lowing the scheme in Brita.in where the use of women to operate the sen- sitive dials of the fire control in:tru- ments in anti-aircraft batt ,ries ha been a notable i:::uccess.
\Y om n aro al. ·o wanted a::-; welders, painter., electricians, fitters for aero- nlane engines, carpenters, instrument makers, radio mechanics, parachute j)ackers, canteen workers, clerical worker,,, transJ>ort drivers a11d many other kinds of war work.
An Inspiration To The .Men.
The zeal with which many women have taken to war work has been an inspiration to their menfolk, who, de- termined not to be outdone, have shown their desire to pull their weight in this all-in war by going on active service. More inspiration, how- ever, is needed.
Jewish women have bee;i renowned for the way they stuod by their men throughout the centuries of struggle for Jewish freedom. To-day, more than ever before, the Jewish cause is in the b3lance. Jewish men and Jew- ish women have rallied to the fight against Hitlerism and tfle concentra- tion camp regime it stands for. But an even greater effort is needed.

"THE WOMEN" AT STANDARD THEATRE
Rooking is now open at Publix for th(' performances of the farnou.;; play,
"The Women,'' by Clare Boothe, which is being directed for the Jo- hannesburg Repertory Players by the celebrated producer, Miss Leontine Sagan, and will be presentefl at the Standard Theatre from June 6 to lG.
The sophisticated dialogue, ruth- les;;; characterisation, and lively situ- ations have made this play one of the most entertaining theatrical pieces of its kind, a11d one also that allows much scope to the producer and demands considerable talent from the actors. AU these requirements will be amply satisfied in the forth- coming production, which will no doubt prove a tn~mendous draw.
