Excellent · Work of

The eighth annual general meet- ing of the Sisterhood (Women's As- sociation of the Johannesburg Jew- ish Reform Congregation), was held in the Sisterhood Reception Room, Temple Israel. Mrs. M. Cassell was in the chair.

The Executive report dealt with a wide sphere of activities, chief of which was war relief work. The billeting of soldiers at Herholdt House (under the auspices of the S.A. Jewish Ex-Service League) had done much good. Since the com- mencement of this . cheme on 22nd June, 1940, to date, 22,044 soldiers had been billeted by the Sisterhood.

"Thatchings," the After Care Home for Soldiers, was another branch of war ielief work to which the Sisterhood devoted time.

Military hospital visiting was car- ried on in capable manner by a special sub-committee of the Sister- hood.

Assistance had been given to Jewish organisations, especi- ally to the Johannesburg Jew- ish Reform Congregation, in re- ligious, educational, charitable !ind social activities of the congregation.

The success of the Temple Israel School, the Children's Sabbath morn- ing services, etc., was in a large measure due to the indefatigable ef- forts of the Sisterhood.

SUCCESSFUL VARIETY CONCERT FOR J.N.F.

A successful N"ariety concert, held in aid of the Jewish N atio.nal Fund, attracted a large audience to the Coronation Hall on Wednesday night, 29th October. It was held under the auspices of the City branch of the Johannesburg Women's Zionist League, and was organised by Maida Hassall and her "Co-o.ptimists.''

The following co.ntributed to the programme: Terry Martin, Freda Gross, Athol McPhail, Daphne McRose, Beryl Thatcher, Mudah Dirk, Naomi Green, Eula Keat, Maida Hass all, Lilian Abbot,

"Edwin" the Master Magician, Jessie Birk, Jean Kruger, Francis Fried- man, the Wyllis Levett's Tiny Tots, and the "Rhythm Rascals" Orchestra.

The accompanist was Stella Sapire.

Mr. Barney L. Lurie compered.

The function concluded after Mrs.

Cecilia Lewenthal, secretary of the City branch of the League, had pro- posed a vote of thanks to the artists, who had provided such -excellent en- tertainment.

Tributes to the Sisterhood were then paid by the following persons:

Councillor Mrs. E. M. Pemberton, chairman of Home Comforts; Mrs.

Maurice Franks, chairman of the Union of Jewish Women of South Africa; Mr. Michael H. Kam, hon- orarv secretary of the S.A. Jewish Ex-Service League; Mr. Harry Landau, chairman of the War Ser- vices Council of the S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies, and Rabbi M. C.

Weiler, on behalf of the Johannes- burg Jewish Reform Congregation.

Mrs. M. Cassell, chairma.n of the Sisterhood for three consecutive

~·ears, has retired from that position.

A BALL ON 3rd DECEMBER

The annual ball organised by the City Jewish Ladies' Benevolent Society will take place at the City Hall on Wednesday, 3rd December.

The proceeds are in aid of distressed families in Johannesburg. Charles Berman's orchestra will supply the dance music. Catering is by Gins- berg's (sit-down supper). Tickets ar.d table reservations can be made by 'phoning 44-6268 or 44-1250.

Kossowsky are leaving on the 3.10 p.m. train on Wednesday, 12th No-

vember, for a month's holiday at Muizenberg.

Concert of Russian Music on Sunday Night

Tickets are selling fast for the concert of Russian music to be held in the Colosseum Theatre on Sunday night, in support of Medical Aid for Russia, and th-ere are still a number of good seats available at the vari- ous prices. Tickets can be obtained at the Colosseum and Publix, and also at the door on the night of the concert.

"The Lady Eve" at Colosseum

The film opening at the Colosseum to-day is "The Lady Eve," co-starr- ing Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda. It was directed and produced by Preston Sturges. There is a clever and exciting plot, and the picture ends on an unusual note. Others in the cast include Charles Coburn, Eric Blore and Melville Cooper as w JI as Eugene Pallette, Martha O'Driscoll and William Demarest.

Attractions at Standard

To-morrow, Monday and Tues- day, the Standard Theatre will show "The Ware Case." Clive Brook acts opposite Jane Baxter in this dramatic story taken from the great novel, and Barry K. Barnes also has an important role.

On Wednesday, Thursday and Fri- day the Standard Theatre will pre- sent that entertaining comedy, "The Doctor Takes A Wife," featuring Loretta Young and Ray Milland.

Loretta takes the role of a spinster novelist who is inveigled into mar- riage with a doctor. Their domestic bliss is continually upset by her career and her attempts to keep up her publicity at the cost of her hus- band's peace of mind.

"The Lone Wolf Meets a Lady"

"The Trial of Mary Dugan" at Metro

That sensational play by Bayard Veiller, "The Trial of Mary Dugan,"

has been brought to the screen again.

It is being presented at the Metro to- day and will without doubt prove most popular with patrons of this theatre.

It is an exciting and intriguing crime story in which Robert Y our.g and Laraine Day take the leading roles, and in which full scope is given to the talents of both. All lovers of thrilling fiction will enjoy this pic- ture. Children under twelve will not be admitted.
