and the importance of home environ- ment and home influence.

Mrs. Bloom proposed a vote of thanks to Rabbi Zlotnik, and a vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Klein for the v·ery pleasant afternoon.

FINE CONCERT FOR RED CROSS

Mrs. I. Kuper and a commiteee of ladies were responsible for a success- ful concert held in the charming and spacious home of Dr. and Mr . E.

Archer-Brown in Houghton on Wed- nesday evening, in aid of the Red Cross War Relief Fund. There was a varied programme consisting of instrumental and vocal items. The concert was opened by Ethel Mann's singing of "Land of Hope and Glory,"

in which the audience joined.

Isador Epstein, the noted piano virtuoso, contributed short works by Scriabin and Chopin, and his fine performance was deeply appreciated. ' The Johannesburg Trio (Robert Lloyd, Bram Verhoef and Herman Becker) contributed solos and a Schubert movement. Making her first appearance since her return from England, Isobel McLaren sang a Debussy song and an aria from

"Samson and Delilah," and sh wed herself the possessor of a gifted voice. She has a fine platform pre- sence. Madge Fabian recited a Robert Browning poem, and Cantor S. Backon, Cantor I. Alter and Mrs.

Jean Russell contributed to an excel- lent programme.

It is announced by the Mayfair Hebrew Co.ngregatiqn of Johannes- burg that Cantor P. Braitman has been engaged as permanent chazan.

Cantor Braitman will conduct ser- vices every Friday evening and Saturday morning and will also of- ficiate at weddings.

Housman's "We Are Not Amu ed,'' a very fine performance was given by Anita Colman as Queen Victoria.

S.A. RED CROSS SOCIETY General Smuts Expresses Thank

The President of the South African Red Cross Society has received a letter from the Prime Minister, General J. C. Smuts, thanking the Society for its gift of nearly £26,000 for the purchase of an aeroplane ambulance.

The ninth annual general meeting of the Souther.n Suburbs ~omen's Mizrachi was held at the residence ?f

Rev. and Mrs. A. L. Kaplan, Kenil- worth on Thursday, 14th instant. A repre~entative gathering, including members of the Women's Zionist League, attended.

Mrs. A. L. Kaplan, who presided, at the outset paid ti·ibute to the late Mrs. I lein who had been chairlady of the organisation for four years.

The gathering rose as a mark of respect.

Mrs. Feinstein, the hon. secretary, read the minutes of the last general meeting.

Mr. S. M. Levin Visits Strand- Somerset West

On Sunday evening, 3rd inst., Mr.

S. M. Levin, of Capetown, addressed the members of the Strand-Somerset West Zio.nist Society on "Jewry After Twelve Months of War."

The speaker reviewed the Jewish position since the outbreak of war, pointing out that the .Jewish people were wholeheartedly behind the Allies in their struggle against Nazism. He went on to deal with the efforts of the Jewish Agency for the creaticn of a. Jewish army and also showed how Palestine to-day was, from the industrial and agric~ltural point of view, o'f enormous assist- ance to the Allies.

Discussion followed, and-a vote of thanks to the speaker was. nroposed by Mr. M. Horwitz. Mr. G. Kruss was in the chair.

"Rose Marie" at Metro

Formby Film at Curzon

George Formby has one of the fun- niest rol s of his screen career in the film, "Let George Do It," to b seen at the Curzon this week. A number of highly amu ing episodes are strung together in a diverting story of a British Secret Service agent whose business it is to discover an enemy organisation which is giving informa- tion to U Boats about departing vessels. Particularly hilarious is a dream sequence in which George meet Hitler and engages in a fight with him. The picture reaches a high level of scr en entertai.nment and is one which no Formby fan will care to miss.

Bette Davis at Colosseum

"All This and Heaven Too," the film based on Rachel Field's best- seller of that name, has attracted

such large audiences to. the Colosseum that it is .now entering on its second week at that theatre. Starring Bette Davis and Charles. Boyer, the film is outstanding bot;h for the superb act- ing of this gifted pair and for ~he intrinsic interest of the plot, which tells an almost forgotten story of a scandal which rocked France .nearly a hundred years ago. Some ex- ceedingly talented child-stars appear in the picture, and make a consider- able contribution to the polished acting to be seen in this film.

sure of present-day living, Walter Wanger has produced a diverting story in "Winter Car.nival," which will open at the 20th Century Theatre shortly.
