Rev. Backon, accompanied by Mrs.
Backon and his sister-in-law, Mi R.
Duchen, are returning to South Africa in the Guilio Cesare ter n ab nee of over ten months in Europe and will rrlv in Cape Town at the week-end.
During that time they were living in Milan, Italy, where Rev. Backon studied assiduously under the leading profesaors of singing there.
Immediately on their arrival in Johannesburg, Rev. Backon will take up his new duties as Cantor at the Yeoville Synagogue.

PLAZA ATTRACTION
Over the week-end, the film attraction at the Plaza Theatre will be "Hollywood Hotel" a sparkling musical with Dick Powell and Rose- mary Lane, Hugh Herbert and Glenda Farrell, and also Benny Goodman with his Swing Band. From Monday
"A Slight Case of Murder," the mystery thriller featuring Edward G. Robinson will be shown. The sup- porting programmes of both films are interesting.

A dance in aid of the funds of the Communal Hall of Bloemfontein, was held at that institution on the 13th inst., and proved a most successful affair.
The hall was well filled with dancers. The committee responsible for the function worked very hard·
indeed in order to make it a success.

A pretty wedding was solemnised in the local Synagogue when Miss Rae Kimmel married Mr. Ben Smith of Germiston. The Synagogue was crowded and the bride looked charm- ing as she entered on the arm of her father. Rabbi 01". M. Romm assist"d by the Reve1 end Hadassin, officiated at the ceremony. A reception was held afterwards at the Communal iiall. Mr. J. Phillips proposed the toast of the parents after Dr. Romm had proposed the principal toast o the b1 ide and bridegroom.
On Sunday the 17th ult., Bloem- fontein to ether with all the com- munities in the British Common- wealth assembled in the Synagogue to offer their prayers on behalf of our persecuted brethren in Central Europe. Dr. Romm read the prin- cipal prayer and delivered an eloquent sermon. He was assisted by the Reverends Hadasmn and Reichen- berg.

The Free State Committee of the Board of Deputies held their Bi- Annual Provincial Conference on Sunday, the 24th ult. Mr. ·J. Phillips, Vice-President of the Board, presided and was assisted by Advocate G.
Saron, Secretary of the Executive, who came down from Johannesburg.
Animated discussions took place and the deliberations lasted to a late hour in the afternoon. At the election all the members of the previous Commit- tee were returned with the addition of Advocate I. L. Horwitz, K.C. The delegates were entertained to a luncheon which was given in their honour by the Free State Committee at the Phoenix Hotel.

A Successful Function
The first dance of the Blue TrianoJe Table Tennis Club took place last Saturday night in the Yeoville Hall.
Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Slater were the guests of honour. The committe<' re- sponsible for the success of the function were Mr. D. Kaplan, Chair- man; Messrs. B. Amdur; M. and H. Stein; D. Sampson; C. Pierson and B.
