Last Rubinstein Recital
There wa a huge gathering at the ColosReum Theatre on Sunday night when the large auditorium was filled to overflowing on the occasion of the last recital given in Johan- nesburg b:v Arthur Rubinstein, the brilliant piano virtuoso.
The famous artist was at the top of his form and was obviously touched by the enthusiasm of the representative and understanding audience. He was particularly bril- liant in the Tschaikovsky work. The orchestra, under the control of Mr.
Theo Wendt, gave the artist excellent support.
Rubinstein excelled himself in his playing of the Chopin Polon- aise and again repeated his sparkling rendition of the De Falla composi-
tion-full of musical "fireworks"- which he had played at his first con- cert. Rubinstein had to reply to many encores, and his audience final- ly, but reluctantly, left.
It was a memorable ev·ening of great music !

Fine Performance by String Quartet
mHE second in the series of cham-
.l ber music concerts given by the
· etelby String Quartet took place at he Carlton Hotel on Thursday even- ng last. The attendance was excel- tent.
The concert was made notable by i he appearanc·e of Isador Epstein, he eminent pianist, who co-operated
rr the Brahms pianoforte quartet, us 25 in G. Mnior and the Dohnanyi ianoforte quintet, No. 2, opus 26.
he quartet played delightfully some 3rahms and Haydn compositions.
The work of Mr. Epstein at the ianoforte was vital and full of fine orce. Unfortunately the effect was andicapped by an inadequate piano.
t is a pity that playing of so high a tandard should not have the advant- ge of a really first-class piano.
The members of the quartet are arold Ketelby, Violet Rowland, :.iettie Vermaak and Reuben Gold-
erg, and they are to be congratu- ated on presenting chamber music as
should be played. The next con- ert in the series will take place on
hursday, September 28th.
