Richard Tauber' s Recital

Lovers of singing were well re- warded on Sunday night at the Colosseum when Richard Tauber, the eminent tenor, gave the first song re- cital of his present season. The audi- ence was an appreciative one and the artist was recalled again and again and was not released until he had rendered a considerable number of encores. •

Tauber showed amazing art in his subtle interpretation of a number of Schubert songs. They certainly could not have been sung with finer ar- tistry. The artist was assisted by Mara Losseff, who rendered excerpts from "Land of Smiles" and by Mr.

Percy Kahn, who was not only the ideal accompanist, but also rendered a few piano items.

Tauber is due to appear with the Colosseum Orchestra on Sunday, No- vember 12, and the auditorium of the theatre will no doubt be crowded for the occasion. On Sunday evening, No- vember 5, he will give a recital at the Palladium Theatre in Springs.

"The Wizard of Oz" at the Metro

"The Wizard of Oz" now in its second week at the Metro Theatre, is a fairy tale set forth with living actors. Photographed in technicolour, the picture tells of a make-believe world with characters that are at once human and not human, grotesque and lovable. Judy Garland gives a splen- did performance as Dorothy, the Kansas girl, who ran away from home. There are some excellent scenes in the Land of Oz, in the Wizard's City, the Wizard's Castle, etc. The supporting programme is good.

"Confessions of a Nazi Spy"

Continues at the Empire

Now in its third week at the Em pire, "Confessions of a .Nazi Spy"

continues to impress crowded audi ences by its brilliant exposure of Nazi Germany to spread its ruthless doc- trines in other countries. Excellently

c~st with Edward G. Robinson, Fran- cis Lederer and Paul Lukas and many others, the film depicts the attempts of a huge Nazi organisation to foment unrest arnong Americans of German birth. The supporting pro gramme is up to its usual hig·h stan

"The Beachcomber" at the Colosseum

Charles Laughton, the Engli'sh character actor, gives an excellent performance in the leading role or Ginger Ted in "The Beachcomber,'' the film adapted from the comedy based on "Vessel of Wrath," by Somerset Maugham. Elsa Lanches- ter plays the supporting leading role

and the film is one which will endear the public to both these fine actors of the screen. The supporting pro- gramme includes "The March of Time" and various other news and shorts.
