Analyse the problem.
Introduction
• Everyone has problems, although we do deal with them differently. Some of us do it in ways that are more healthy than others.
• To help those who can’t face their problems with the right mind set, I present the six step problem solving process.
• It provides clearly defined, east to follow steps to assist in problem solving that lead to the development of the best possible solution.
Step 1: Identify and Select the Problem
• Take a step back and identify the problem. The PDSA method can be used to determine “what is really causing” the problem.
• Once everything has been thoroughly thought through, a consensus should try to be reached.
• You need to keep an open mind for this and be flexible regarding emotions and feelings. You MUST be able to live with the decision made.
• Once you have identified the problem, write it down in a clear, concise
statement. This will illustrate the gap between the problem and the goal and help to bridge that gap.
Step 2: Analyse the Problem
• Identify the bottom-line root cause of the problem.
• Research, collect and gather any information relating to the problem.
• Examine the problem closely. Try to come to a consensus and conclusion about the problem occurs.
Step 3: Generate Potential Solutions
• Develop possible solutions. They should be creative and practical.
• Every possible solution to every variation of the problem should be accounted for.
• Use the brainstorming process. Remember, there are no wrong answers and you should not judge yourself too harshly.
• At the end of brainstorming, clarify all ideas and suggestions to garner a better understanding.
Step 4: Select and Plan the Solution
• It is now time to select the best possible solution from the variety of ideas.
• Take into consideration circumstances, resources i.e. money, people, procedures, politics, etc.
• Prioritise solutions into what will work best. This begins an elimination process.
• Reach a consensus about the best solution.
• PLAN from the PDSA- formulate a plan of action to track the progress of the solution.
Step 5: Implement the Solution
• This is the DO stage of the PDSA, carry out the solution.
• You must be able to track the solution to the to the STUDY stage.
Step 6: Evaluate the Solution
• This is the STUDY stage of the PDSA. Ask yourself whether the solution worked or not…
• Analyse and improve upon the solution based on the information gathered in the DO stage.
• Then ACT upon your feelings regarding the problem.
• The problem should now either be solved or be more manageable.
Concluding Statements
• The 6 Step Problem solving Process in conjunction with the PDSA assists people in making better decisions and improve important areas of their lives.
• A multitude of people and businesses use this technique. Now knowing the steps, you will be able to take a good, analytical look at issues and problems you regularly face.
