The res i l i en c e o f the i nd i genous vege t a t i on ensu red s u r v i va l of t empe r a t e lowland fores t s un t i l t h e a r r i va l o f European s e t t le r s abou t 150 years ago . The t ephroch rono logy and bo t any were well known and fo rmed a sound bas i s on wh i ch t o commence palynolog i ca l s tud i e s .
