A STUDY OF DIALECT DIFFERENTIATION BETWEEN JAVANESE SURABAYA AND MADIUN USED IN TRADITIONAL MARKET IN
EAST JAVA
ABSTRACT
Javanese language is the language used by some parts of regional in Java, especially East Java. Two of them are Surabaya and Madiun. The societies use Javanese language to communicate with others in their daily activity. However, they differ in terms of their vocabulary and pronunciation. It is known as Surabaya and Madiun’s dialect.
Those differentiations make the researcher interested to take it as her theme of research. This study is focusing on the differentiation of vocabulary and
pronunciation between Surabaya and Madiun.
The instruments used in this study were observation and documentation. The researcher did observation to know the condition of the subject in their daily activity. Besides, the researcher also used documentation as the instrument because the researcher collected the data by using the script of the record taken from recording. Then, the researcher analysed the data and classified the data based on the reseacrh problems.
The results of this study showed that there were fifteen vocabularies which were indicated the differentiation between Surabaya and Madiun societies. The vocabularies included into some parts of speech. They were verb, adjective, adverb, preposition and noun. Besides, there were thirteen pronunciations which were indicated the differentiation between Surabaya and Madiun societies. The differentiation of pronunciation was in some letters, most of them were vowel.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Chapter I of this research presents such topics as: background of study,
statement of problem, purpose of study, significance of study, scope and limitation,
and definition of key terms. Each section is presented as follows.
1.1
Background of the Study
People cannot live by themselves or without any help from others because
they live interdependently. They need to interact and communicate with others, so
they need language to express their thought. “Language is a system of communication
by written or spoken words which is used by the people of a particular country or
area” (Longman, 2008: 895). It is a way to express their feelings, toughs, and ideas to
others. Language is very important to human life, that is why in this world there are
many languages which are used by every society in their regions and it cannot be
separated each other especially in Indonesia.
According to Marjohan (1988: 1), “sociolinguistics is a branch of linguistics
which studies language variation and its relation to social variation.” It studies about
varieties of language like jargon, slang, colloquial, style, and dialect. One of the
interesting topics in this study is about dialect.
Indonesia has so many tribes, automatically it has many languages and
dialects. Every dialect has different characteristic from others. Dialect is a variety of
2
researcher interested to take the dialect to be a research’s theme because she can learn
more about the variation of dialect in our country.
There are three kinds of dialect, they are regional dialect, social dialect, and
geographical dialect. “Regional dialect is a dialect spoken in a specific geographic
area that may arise from, and is reinforced by, that areas integrity” (Fromkin, 2003:
593). For example the dialect spoken in Surabaya and Madiun are different even
though both have the same language that is Javanese.
Our country has many kinds of dialects, especially in Java which has three
parts of region, namely West Java, Central Java, and East Java that usually make the
society of Java difficult to understand the language itself. We also cannot use our
dialect in other dialects because it has differentiation in grammar, vocabulary, and
pronunciation. So, the researcher wants to do the research about the differentiation of
dialect between two cities in East Java, they are Surabaya and Madiun.
The researcher decides to do this research because basically the language of
Surabaya and Madiun are similar, that is Javanese language. Because they are
separated regionally, so automatically their dialects are different. Surabaya is located
in the central of East Java as the capital of East Java. It is well known as a city that
has more rude dialect compared with others. On the contrary, Madiun is frontier town
between East Java and Central Java. Madiun has smooth dialect because it is closer
with Central Java dialect than East Java dialect. So, the researcher believes that this
research is important because she can compare two dialects, which are in reality they
3
Based on the important of this research, the researcher must know about the
previous researches that studied about dialect. They were: Nurul Qadryanti (2007),
Elpa Nauli Raila (2008) and Alfian Dedi Rahman (2011).
The previous research was written by Qadryanti (2007) with the title “A Study
on Dialect Varieties Used by Sumenep People in Maduranese Regional Language”.
The result of her research stated that the dialect which was used between Kangean
and Kalianget people was different. Kalianget patois is easier to be understood than
the Kangean patois. Besides that, the dialect could be divided into four types, those
were: the words that were changed in letter/syllable, the words that were changed in
letter, the words that were nearly changed in letter/syllable, the words that were
different in syllable. The causes in differences were geographical position, the
coming of foreigners with different languages to Madura, and the development of
Modern technology.
The second research was written by Raila (2008) with the title “Dialect
Differences between Banjarmasin and Amuntai of Banjarese. The result of her
research stated that there were differences of sounds pattern such as sounds [e], for
example in words; semalam, in Banjarmasin it is pronounced //s[é]malam// but in
Amuntai //s[a]malam//. It also has differentiation in vocabulary, for example; the
word kamu, Banjarmasin people say nyawa, but Amuntai people say kau’ui. The
differences of sound pattern and vocabulary between Banjarmasin and Amuntai

The last research was conducted by Rahman (2011) with the title “A Study on
Dialect Varieties Used by Tenggeresin Javanesin Regional Language. The result of
his research stated that Tengger Javanese dialect characteristic was dominanced by
speech sound “a” at the end of syllables, not pronounced “o” as in most of Java
language or regional Javanese language. The intonation of their sentences were flat
because of the different characteristic of Javanese accent. There were many other
unique terms of variety of Tengger dialect which is interesting.
Based on the description in the previous research, there is none of the previous
researchers who took the research about the differentiation of Surabaya and Madiun
dialect used by the people in traditional market yet.
1.2
Statement of Study
1. What are the differences of vocabulary used by the people from Javanese
Surabaya and Madiun in traditional market in East Java?
2. What are the differences of pronunciation used by the people from Javanese
Surabaya and Madiun in traditional market in East Java?
1.3
Purpose of Study
1. To describe the differences of vocabulary used by the people from Javanese
Surabaya and Madiun in traditional market in East Java.
2. To describe the differences of pronunciation used by the people from Javanese

1.4
Significance of Study
Practically, this study gives more knowledge about the differences of
Surabaya and Madiun’s dialect to the people who live in Surabaya and Madiun. So,
they are able to understand both of the dialects. Besides, it gives the real example to
the student of sociolinguistic study about differentiation of dialect in our country,
especially between Javanese Surabaya and Madiun.
Theoretically, this study also gives contribution to the lecturers of
sociolinguistic study to improve their knowledge about dialects. Automatically, the
student are able to differentiate one dialect from others, especially Surabaya and
Madiun’s dialect.
1.5
Scope and Limitation
The scope of this study is the differentiation of dialects between Javanese
Surabaya and Madiun in East Java. The limitation of the study is focused on
vocabulary and pronunciation that are used by the people in Surabaya and Madiun’s
traditional market especially in trade transaction. The trade transaction here is a
transaction that is used by the buyer and seller of goods in every ages in Surabaya and
