Key words: Cornell Note Taking Technique, Reading Comprehension

Achievement

Reading is one of the important skills in order to get some information from

different types of material and for different purposes in learning English. In teaching

reading, the teacher should apply the appropriate technique in the reading class that

can help the students to get the message or the information from the text. Therefore,

applying Cornell Note Taking technique can be used as one of the teaching

techniques that can help the students to comprehend the reading materials.

This research was conducted to investigate the effect of using Cornell Note

Taking technique on the ninth year students’ reading comprehension achievement at

SMPN 1 Diwek Jombang in the 2010/2011 academic year. The populations of this

research were the ninth year students of SMPN 1 Diwek Jombang in the 2010/2011

academic year. The research respondents were determined by cluster random

sampling through a lottery. The total number of the respondents was 71 students,

consisting of 36 students of grade IX-C as the experimental group taught by using

Cornell Note Taking technique that was done individually, while the control group

consisting of 35 students of grade IX-B taught by PPP (presentation, practice and

The data of this research were collected from the scores of reading

comprehension test. The data were collected from the post test to make comparison

between the two groups after treatments, and analyzed by using t-test formula. Based

on the calculation, the mean score of the experimental group was higher that that of

the mean score of the control group (78.05 > 70.71). The result of the t-test analysis

with 95% significant level of was higher than that of the t-table (5 2.00). It means

that the null hypothesis was rejected, thus the alternative hypothesis stating that there

is a significant effect of using Cornell Note Taking technique on the grade IX

students’ reading comprehension achievement at SMPN 1 Diwek Jombang in the

2010/2011 academic year was accepted. This shows that there was a significant mean

difference between the experimental group and the control group.

The research results proved that there was a significant effect of using Cornell

Note Taking technique on the ninth year students’ reading comprehension

achievement at SMPN 1 Diwek Jombang in the 2010/2011 academic year. Therefore,

it is recommended for the English teacher to learn and use Cornell Note Taking

technique as an alternative technique in teaching reading comprehension and the

students can practice their ability in comprehending the reading materials by using

Cornell Note Taking technique to improve their reading comprehension achievement.

Furthermore, hopefully the research results are useful as a consideration to give
