ABSTRACT

People as a social creature cannot avoid interacting with other people in the world. It means that they must communicate with their society. Language is a meansof communication, including sentences that are appropriate in various situations. Sociolinguistics is a part of the language which learns about society. This means that we have capacity to produce the languages that signify certain meaning to understand or to interpret the languages produced by certain community. Register is one of the language varieties that is used based on the use or the subject matter. The English register used by “Information Technology Technicians” is much and not all people know it well. Technician is a worker in a field of technology who is proficiently (professionally) to relevant with skills and techniques,a relatively practical understanding of the theoretical principles. The technicians usually have register to communicate each others. The register is used when the technicians are working together in the workplace.

This study was conducted to know the English registers used by information technology technicians at Hi-Tech Mall Surabaya. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative research. This research using research subject. Because of limited time, the researcher took observation from four stores, such as Perdana Computer, Gito Computer, Tan Computer and Istana Computer. And the researcher did the interview to ten technicians who had different experiences. Finally, the questionnaires distributed to seventy five technicians.

The research finding of the research was the English registers used by information technology technicians at Hi-Tech Mall was 52 words. The different names of English register showed that there were 30 Technicians who had more than one year experience used standard English registers when they working. 20 dan 15 technicians who had more than 5 years and 10 years experience had different names of English register arround 3.The last, 10 technicians who had more than 15 years experience had different names arround 5.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents an introduction. It discusses about the Background of

the Study, Statement of the Problems, Purpose of the Study, Scope and Limitation,

The Significance of the Study, and The Definition of Key Terms.

1.1 Background of the Study

Study of language is learning human being itself. Language is a

communication of thoughts and feelings through a system of arbitrary signals, such

as voice sounds, gestures, or written symbols. Language is a system of

communication, which has a function to give information. It means that a language

can establish and maintain relationship among members of society. A language is a

system of arbritary verbal symbols which is used by the member of a speech

community as a means communication to interact and express their ideas, feelings

and thoughts (Wardhaugh in Sabilah, 2001:1). Everyone uses a language to

communicate with others in order to understand each other. According to Sari

(1988:132) no human language is fixed, uniform, or unvarying: all language show

internal variation. The actual usage varies from group to group and speaker to

speaker, in term of pronunciation of language, the choice of word and the meaning of

those words, and the use of syntactic constructions.

According to R.A Hudson (1996:1) sociolinguistics is the study a language

sociolinguistics is a branch of linguistics which studies the relationship between

language and society. Furthermore, Chaika (1982:2) states that sociolinguistics is the

study of the ways people use language in social interaction. It investigates the

relationship between language and society with the goal of a better understanding of

the structure of the language and how the language functions.

Now, the development of language is more complex because society

consists of groups that can create new varieties of language in their communication

with other. In the University of Muhammadiyah Malang, there are some language

variations used by the members of organizations like “Tapak Suci”, “Photographic”,

“Music Community”. And advertising field “Jurnalist Community”, Etc. “ A

variation of language is the existence of observable differences in the way a language

is used in speech community” (Trask, 1999:333). From the variation of language, we

only take one, it is register.

Registers are sets of language items associated with discrete occupational of

social groups (Wardhaugh, 2002:51). There are Surgeons, airline pilots, bank

managers, motorcycle mechanics and engineer of a locomotive. It depends on the

profession in order to make their communication more easy in the working area. If

the register is used in public area, it will cause misunderstanding.

Technician is a worker in a field of technology who is proficient

(professional) in the relevant skills and techniques, with a relatively practical

understanding of the theoretical principles. For example, although audio technicians

operating sound equipment, and they will likely know more about acoustics than

other studio personnel such as performers.In this year, Techinicians are more many

than few years ago because the technology is more modern with advanced years. The

tools of technician are modern too. Right now, many technicians workin the

computer subject. And then the technician must know about software or hardware

because they are connecting each other.

Hi-Tech Mall is Information Technology Mall and it is popular in

Indonesia, especially, in Surabaya City. The store was built few years ago. There,

many kinds of goods are sold, such as, Laptop, Hardware, Software, Digital Camera.

The stores open at 10 A.M until 6 P.M, except, is Ramayana Store it open until 10

P.M. Every day is crowded with visitor who wants to buy concerning about

Information Technology.

There were some studies related with the registers. In 2004, Mujiningsih had

conducted the study about the registers used by Tapak Suci community of University

of Muhammadiyah Malang. The result of her research showed that there were 29

registers found and used by “Tapak Suci” community in their martial arts activity. It

happen when they practise the movements. In her thesis, she found that there were

three reasons why the community of “Tapak Suci” organization used registers. In

2005, Ichwanto studied “the register used by Traditional Apple Farmers at

Kecamatan Bumiaji Batu”. The result of her research showed that there were more

In this study, the researcher is interested in analyzing the register used by

“Information Technology Technicians” at Hi-Tech Mall Surabaya. Moreover most of

people used a computer services like Laptop or Personal Computer to doing daily

activities. In addition, Information Technology Technicians is selected as the object

of analysis because some English vocabularies are used by this community year by

year. Besides, English registers make easier for someone who knows and

understands English.

The researcher is interested in investigate the registers used by “Information

Technology Technicians” at Hi-Tech Mall Surabaya because many technicians are

there. The register are same in all technicians or not. The researcher to know the

kinds of English registers are used, the meaning of English register and different

names of English registers used by Information Technology Technicians. Based the

reason, the researcher take the title research “The English Registers Used by

Information Technology at Hi-Tech Mall Surabaya”. Many people used a computer

and not of them know about the language in the computer because English in

computer is not same in the dictionary.

1.2 Statement of the Problems

Related to the background of study, the writer formulates statements of

problem as follows :

1. What Kinds of English registers are used by Information Technology

3. What are the different names of English registers used by Information

Technology Technicians at Hi-Tech Mall Surabaya?

1.3 Purpose of the Study

This study conducted in order to get the answers of the statement of

problems, namely :

1. To know the kinds of English registers are used by Information Technology

Technicians community at Hi-Tech Mall Surabaya.

2. To know the meaning of English registers used by Information Technology

Technicians community at Hi-Tech Mall Surabaya.

3. To know the different names of English registers used by Information

Technology Technicians at Hi-Tech Mall Surabaya.

1.4 Scope and Limitation

In the study, the researcher only focuses on studying English registers used

by Information Technology Technicians at Hi-Tech Mall Surabaya. More

specifically, this study is focused on finding out the kinds of English registers, the

meaning of English registers and the different names of English register are used by

Information TechnologyTechnicians at Hi-Tech Mall Surabaya. There are some

some possible problems that may arise while doing this study, the researcheronly

takes the English registers used by Information Technology Technicians at Hi-Tech

Mall Surabaya because they communicate with others in working area more

intensively than the other profession in other units.

1.5 The Significance of the Study

The result of this study is expected to give knowledge about the study of

Sociolinguistics. First, for student of English Department, the writer hope to adding

the information about English register and to Enrich the English vocabulary.

Second, for Information Technology Teachers, this thesis can contribute adding the

knowledge especially about computer. And third, for technicians, the writer hopes to

other technicians can give information about computer subject. Finally, for all of

people, this thesis can becomes adding information and knowledge about register

especially English register used by Information Technology Technicians.

1.6 The Definition of Key Terms

The definition of key terms is important in this study to avoid

misunderstanding or misperception. The researcher has formulated the terms as

follows :

1. Language is a human system to communication with others.

2. Sociolinguistics is the study a language and society which has connecting
