ABSTRACT
Afida, Nova, 1009010003. 2015: Social Segregation in Kathryn Stockett’s The Help: The Sociological Approach. Undergraduate Thesis for Sarjana Sastra Degree, English Department, Faculty of Letters, University of Muhammadiyah Purwokerto.
This research reveals about social segregation in Kathryn stockett’s The Help novel. It is proposed to find out the segregation in Jackson Mississippi in 1960s as it is reflected by the characters of the novel.
In conducting this research, the researcher applies sociology of literature theory. By using that theory, this research focuses on the characters’ view toward social segregation. The researcher divides into two characters, the main and the minor characters. The main characters are: Aibileen and Minny as the black maids, and Skeeter and Hilly as white lady. The minor characters are all the white ladies: Elizabeth, and Celia. Each character represents the social segregation in Jackson Mississippi in 1960s as reflected in the novel.
From the analysis, the researcher finds the social segregation in each character based on material and manner aspects. Stockett shows her point of view that she wishes there are equality and no segregation between black and white.
