Based on information on the development of the operation of the issuer codenamed UNTR, gold sales from the Agincourt mine during 2021 to August were recorded at 230,900 Gold Equivalent Ounces (GEOs) or decreased by around 1.15 percent compared to the same period last year which reached 233,600 GEOs.

Meanwhile, when viewed from Komatsu heavy equipment sales, UNTR managed to record an 81.2 percent increase in heavy equipment sales from 1,043 units for year to date (ytd) August 2020 to 1,089 units in August 2021.

Meanwhile, Tuah Turangga Agung's coal sales volume increased by 10.34 percent from 6.72 million tons in August 2020 to 7.42 million tons in August 2021.

"For the Martabe mine, which is managed by Aglincourt, the sales volume is targeted to reach 320,000-330,000 ounces this year," said Sara Lubis, Corporate Secretary of UNTR to Bisnis, Friday (9/24/2021).

During the current year until August, UNTR's highest gold sales were recorded in January 2021 of 35,000 ounces.

Meanwhile, at the close of trading on Friday (9/24/2021), UNTR shares were also parked in the green zone, up 1,000 points or 4.74 percent to Rp22,075 with a market capitalization of Rp82.34 trillion.

Berdasarkan keterangan perkembangan operasi emiten berkode saham UNTR ini, penjualan emas dari tambang Agincourt sepanjang 2021 sampai Agustus tercatat sebanyak 230.900 Gold Equivalent Ounces (GEOs) atau turun sekitar 1,15 persen dibandingkan periode yang sama tahun lalu mencapai 233.600 GEOs.

Sementara itu, jika dilihat dari penjualan alat berat Komatsu, UNTR berhasil men- catatkan kenaikan penjualan alat beratnya 81,2 persen dari 1.043 unit untuk year to date (ytd) Agustus 2020 menjadi 1.089 unit pada ytd Agustus 2021.

Adapun, untuk volume penjualan batu bara Tuah Turangga Agung tercatat naik 10,34 persen dari 6,72 juta ton pada ytd Agustus 2020 menjadi 7,42 juta ton pada ytd Agustus 2021.

“Untuk tambang Martabe, yang dikelola Aglincourt ditargetkan volume penjualan- nya bisa mencapai 320.000-330.000 ons tahun ini,” kata Sara Lubis, Sekretaris Perusahaan UNTR kepada Bisnis, Jumat (24/9/2021).

Pada sepanjang tahun berjalan sampai Agustus ini, penjualan emas tertinggi UNTR dicatatkan pada Januari 2021 sebanyak 35.000 ons.

Adapun, pada penutupan perdagangan Jumat (24/9/2021), saham UNTR juga parkir di zona hijau, naik 1.000 poin atau 4,74 persen ke Rp22.075 dengan kapi- talisasi pasar Rp82,34 triliun. Editor : Farid Firdaus

HE GOVERNMENT continues to encourage downstreaming in the mining sector in order to increase added value for the country. Not without reason, the downstream the product is produced, the contribution to the country can be many times higher.

This was conveyed by the Director General of Mineral and Coal of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ridwan Djamaluddin at the Launching and Review of the Book 'TAMASYA: Mining for the Prosperity of the Community', Thursday (23/09/2021).

Ridwan said the existence of the mining industry provided benefits to the government. Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) from the mining sector is now an average of Rp 40 trillion annually.

However, according to him, this state revenue figure could increase many times to Rp 1,000 trillion per year if the downstream industry of all these mining commodities is developed and all the products produced are finished products and have great added value.

"The government benefits from the mining industry because the Minerba Non-Tax State Revenue is an average of Rp 40 T annually. If you add the processing industry, the contribution of Rp 1,000 trillion per year, the mining industry and its processing industry is very significant,"

Hal tersebut disampaikan oleh Direktur Jenderal Mineral dan Batu Bara Kemen- terian Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral (ESDM) Ridwan Djamaluddin dalam acara Peluncuran dan Bedah Buku 'TAMASYA:

Tambang Mensejahterakan Masyarakat', Kamis (23/09/2021).

Ridwan mengatakan, keberadaan industri tambang memberikan manfaat kepada pemerintah. Penerimaan Negara Bukan Pajak (PNBP) dari sektor pertambangan kini rata-rata setiap tahunnya Rp 40 triliun.

Namun demikian, angka penerimaan negara ini menurutnya bisa naik berlipat- lipat hingga Rp 1.000 triliun per tahun bila industri hilir semua komoditas tambang ini terbangun dan semua produk yang dihasilkan merupakan produk jadi dan bernilai tambah besar.

"Pemerintah mendapatkan manfaat dari industri pertambangan karena Penerimaan Negara Bukan Pajak Minerba setiap tahunnya rata-rata Rp 40 T. Kalau ditambahkan industri pengolahannya, kontribusi Rp 1.000 triliun per tahun, industri pertambangan dan industri pengolahannya sangat signifikan," jelasnya.

The ESDM Sector PNBP target in 2021 is Rp 121.20 trillion, consisting of Rp 75 trillion oil and gas, Rp 39.10 trillion Mineral and Coal, Geothermal Rp 1.44 trillion, and other sectors Rp 5.66 trillion.

Dalam hal ini, imbuhnya, ada 180.000 orang yang bekerja langsung di industri tambang. Jika dikalikan jumlah keluarga dari masing-masing yang terlibat di pertambangan empat orang, maka ada 700.000 orang yang terdampak langsung oleh industri pertambangan.

Sampai Juli 2021 PNBP di sektor ESDM terbesar berasal dari SDA Migas sebesar Rp 47,58 triliun, lalu SDA Minerba sebesar Rp 33,57 triliun, SDA Panas Bumi sebesar Rp 0,79 triliun, dan lainnya sebesar Rp 1,20 triliun.

Adapun target PNBP Sektor ESDM pada 2021 ini sebesar Rp 121,20 triliun, terdiri dari Migas Rp 75 triliun, Minerba Rp 39,10 triliun, Panas Bumi sebesar Rp 1,44 triliun, dan sektor lainnya sebesar Rp 5,66 triliun.

Based on data from the Ministry of ESDM 2020, the Wabu Block holds a potential resource of 117.26 tons of gold ore with an average grade of 2.16 grams per tonne (Au) and 1.76 grams per tonne silver.

Alpha Research Database researcher Ferdy Hasiman said this potential value was equivalent to US$14 billion or almost Rp300 trillion assuming a gold price of US$1,750 per troy once. Meanwhile, every 1 tonne of ore material contains 2.16 grams of gold metal.

"This is far greater than the gold content of Freeport Indonesia's Grasberg ore material, which each ton of material only contains 0.8 grams of gold," said Ferdy, quoted from Tempo.

The Wabu Block is a gold mining concession whose ownership has been released or reduced by PT Freeport Indonesia. According to Law Number 3 of 2020 concerning Minerals and Coal, Ferdy said, gold mining areas that have been released by foreigners must be returned to the state.

Ferdy explained that because the return of the Wabu Block by Freeport was carried out in 2018, its management uses the legal umbrella of Law Number 4 of 2009.

According to the provisions, mining priorities will also be handed over to BUMN or BUMD.

"The process of the Wabu Block has been long awaited and in 2020, SOE Minister Erick Thohir has asked directly to the Minister of ESDM that SOEs are willing and ready to manage the Wabu Block," said Ferdy.

With the news of private ownership in the gold mining area, Ferdy suspected that there had been a tender conducted by the Ministry of ESDM before, but it was not transparent.

Berdasarkan data Kementerian ESDM 2020, Blok Wabu menyimpan potensi sumber daya 117.26 ton bijih emas dengan rata-rata kadar 2,16 gram per ton (Au) dan 1,76 gram per ton perak.

Blok Wabu adalah konsensi tambang emas yang dilepas atau diciutkan kepemilikan- nya oleh PT Freeport Indonesia. Sesuai Undang-undang Nomor 3 Tahun 2020 tentang Mineral dan Batubara, tutur Ferdy, wilayah tambang emas yang telah dilepas asing harus dikembalikan ke negara.

Ferdy menjelaskan, lantaran pengembalian Blok Wabu oleh Freeport sudah di- laksanakan pada 2018, pengelolaannya menggunakan payung hukum Undang- udang Nomor 4 Tahun 2009. Menurut ketentuan, prioritas tambang pun akan diserahkan kepada BUMN atau BUMD.

“Blok Wabu sudah lama ditunggu proses- nya dan pada 2020, Menteri BUMN Erick Thohir pernah meminta langsung ke Menteri ESDM bahwa BUMN bersedia dan siap mengelola Blok Wabu,” ujar Ferdy.

Dengan adanya kabar penguasaan swasta di wilayah tambang emas tersebut, Ferdy menduga sudah ada tender yang dilakukan oleh Kementerian ESDM sebelumnya, namun tidak transparan.

Freeport Prepares Papuan Athlete Bonuses at PON XX

T FREEPORT Indonesia confirmed that it would support the implementation of the XX National Sports Week (PON) in Papua through various things, such as the construction of a sports complex, as well as the provision of bonuses.

T FREEPORT Indonesia menegaskan akan mewujudkan dukungan terhadap penyelenggaraan ajang Pekan Olahraga Nasional (PON) XX di Papua melalui berbagai hal, seperti pembangunan kompleks olahraga, serta pemberian bonus.

Vice President Corporate Communications PT Freeport Indonesia Riza Pratama mengungkapkan, bonus akan diberikan kepada para atlet Papua peraih medali. Sekalipun demikian, total bonus dan cabang olah- raganya belum ditentukan.

"Jumlahnya belum diputuskan dan akan diumumkan secepatnya," kata Riza.

Tak sampai di sana, PT Freeport Indonesia juga memberi dukungan dana mencapai Rp15 miliar. Untuk kompleks olahraga terkait, akan dibangun di atas lahan seluas 12,5 hektare dengan perkiraan biaya hingga US$33 juta, atau lebih dari Rp400 miliar.

"PTFI mengharapkan stadion atletik MSC dapat memberikan kontribusi yang berkesinambungan paska PON XX dengan adanya pertandingan-pertandingan olahraga baik tingkat lokal, nasional ataupun internasional.

Last weekend, the price of coal on the ICE Newcastle (Australia) market was recorded at US$ 191.1/ton. It was up 0.95% from the previous day and was the highest on record since at least 2008.

Over the past week, coal prices rose 1.97%

point-to-point. Since the end of 2020 (year- to-date), the price of the black stone has skyrocketed by 124.84%.

The increasingly expensive gas price also controls the price of coal. Last week, natural gas prices at Henry Hub (Oklahoma) jumped 3.39%. On a year-to- date basis, the price shot up 107.88%.

Increasingly expensive gas prices make the cost of generating electricity with this fuel increasingly uneconomical. In Europe, the cost of generating electricity with natural gas is EUR 75.32/MWh on 21 September 2021. With coal, the price is only EUR 44.18/MWh. This makes coal back to being excellent, even in Europe, which upholds the issue of being environmentally friendly.

"According to our study, coal-fired power generation in Europe has increased to near the peak. The increase in gas prices will further encourage coal price growth, as consumption continues to increase," said Toby Hassall, Analyst at Refinitiv, in his research.

Not only in Europe, coal-fired power generation is also increasing in China. In August 2021, coal-fired electricity production in Panda Country was 516.7 TWh, up 0.3% compared to the same period the previous year (year-on-year).

Coal consumption in Taiwan also shot up.

Sepanjang minggu kemarin, harga batu bara naik 1,97% secara point-to-point. Sejak akhir 2020 (year-to-date),harga si batu hitam meroket 124,84%.

Harga gas yang semakin mahal ikut mengatrol harga batu bara. Minggu lalu, harga gas alam di Henry Hub (Oklahoma) melonjak 3,39%. Secara year-to-date, harga melesat 107,88%.

Harga gas yang semakin mahal membuat biaya pembangkitan listrik dengan bahan bakar ini kian tidak ekonomis. Di Eropa, biaya pembangkitan listrik dengan gas alam adalah EUR 75,32/MWh pada 21 Septem- ber 2021. Dengan batu bara, harganya hanya EUR 44,18/MWh. Ini membuat batu bara kembali menjadi primadona, bahkan di Eropa yang menjunjung tinggi isu ramah lingkungan.

"Menurut kajian kami, pembangkitan listrik dengan batu bara di Eropa naik hingga ke mendekati titik puncak. Kenaikan harga gas akan semakin mendorong pertumbuhan harga batu bara, seiring konsumsi yang semakin bertambah," sebut Toby Hassall, Analis Refinitiv, dalam risetnya.

Tidak cuma di Eropa, pembangkitan listrik dengan batu bara juga meningkat di China.

Pada Agustus 2021, produksi listrik ber- tenaga batu bara di Negeri Panda adalah 516,7 TWh, naik 0,3% dibandingkan periode yang sama tahun sebelumnya (year-on-year).

Konsumsi batu bara di Taiwan pun melesat.

Companies are Encouraged to Apply Back to Back Concepts in

Ex-Mining Areas

INING companies are asked to apply the back to back concept in managing their mining areas in order to provide a sustainable environmental effect.

Director of Coal Business Development at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Sujatmiko said that the rules for the restoration of ex-mining areas had to be established since the mine management planning stage.

“The government requires the placement of reclamation guarantees and post-mining guarantees. If the implementation is not good, then the guarantee was used for reclamation and post-mining," he said during the webinar Friday (24/9/2021).

In principle, the company is obliged to return ex-mining areas to environmental and social functions. These efforts will have a sustainable environmental impact from before the mine operates to completion.

“The Minister of ESDM, Arifin Tasrif, gave a back to back concept. For example, ex- mining areas are then reclaimed. So the ex- mining area is strived to produce as much energy as possible,” he explained.

The energy in question is like from sustainable coal with biomass. Another way is to turn the ex-mining area into another energy source, such as a solar power plant (PLTS) construction area.

Perusahaan Didorong Terapkan Konsep Back to Back Pada Area

ERUSAHAAN tambang diminta untuk menerapkan konsep back to back dalam pengelolaan wilayah pertambangannya agar memberikan efek lingkungan berkelanjutan.

Direktur Pembinaan Pengusahaan Batubara Kementerian Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral (ESDM) Sujatmiko mengatakan bahwa aturan pemulihan area bekas tambang sebenarnya sudah harus di- tetapkan sejak dalam tahap perencanaan pengelolaan tambang.

“Pemerintah mewajibkan penempatan jaminan reklamasi dan jaminan pascatambang. Kalau pelaksanaan kurang baik, maka jaminan tadi digunakan untuk reklamasi dan pascatambang,” katanya saat webinar Jumat (24/9/2021).

Pada prinsipnya, perusahaan wajib mengembalikan daerah bekas tambang pada fungsi lingkungan dan sosial. Upaya itu akan menimbulkan dampak lingkungan berkelanjutan dari sebelum tambang beroperasi hingga selesai.

“Pak Menteri ESDM Arifin Tasrif memberikan konsep back to back. Misalnya daerah bekas tambang, kemudian direkla- masi. Maka daerah bekas tambangnya di- upayakan semaksimal mungkin menghasil- kan energi,” terangnya.

Energi yang dimaksudkan adalah seperti dari batu bara berkelanjutan dengan biomassa. Cara lainnya adalah menjadikan area bekas tambang menjadi sumber energi lain, semisal sebagai area pembangunan pembangkit listrik tenaga surya (PLTS).

(PTBA) is aiming to become an independent power producer (IPP) in line with the plan to build three PLTS in three ex-mining sites it manages.

The three locations belonging to PTBA are in the former Ombilin coal mine, West Sumatra; Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra;

and Bantuas, East Kalimantan.

Bukit Asam Corporate Secretary Apollonius Andwie C said that the plan was still being discussed together with PT PLN (Persero). It is not yet known how far the progress of discussing the project is.

Setali tiga uang, PT Bukit Asam Tbk. (PTBA) membidik target menjadi independent power producer (IPP) seiring dengan rencana pembangunan tiga PLTS di tiga lokasi bekas tambang yang dikelolanya.

Tiga lokasi milik PTBA tersebut berada di bekas tambang batu bara Ombilin, Sumatra Barat; Tanjung Enim, Sumatra Selatan; dan Bantuas, Kalimantan Timur.

Sekretaris Perusahaan Bukit Asam Apollonius Andwie C mengatakan bahwa rencana tersebut masih dibahas bersama dengan PT PLN (Persero). Belum diketahui sejauh mana progres dari pembahasan proyek tersebut.

This is because the price of copper which is traded in dollars is cheaper. For information, the US dollar and world copper prices are moving in opposite directions.

Meanwhile, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) injected funds of US$ 14 billion or equivalent to Rp. 199.4 trillion into the banking system to support market stabilization. Yasutada Suzuki, Head of Investment at EM Sumitomo Mitsui Bank Tokyo, said the injection of funds from the PBOC was an attempt by the Chinese government to prevent a crisis.

"I suspect it is to address Evergrande's concerns and show the PBOC is trying to support the market," Suzuki said.

Tin price hits record high on low inventories

IN prices jumped to a record high on Friday as inventories in exchange warehouses dwindled and supply issues persisted.

Benchmark tin on the London Metal Exchange rose to a record $36,770 a tonne, and was trading 2.4% higher at $36,310 by early afternoon.

The most-traded October tin contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange jumped as much as 4.8% to a record 287,960 yuan ($44,576.54) a tonne.

Prices for the metal have been fueled by supply disruptions in major producing countries and booming demand for electronics, where the metal is used for soldering to connect components.

“A combination of supply issues and a pick up in demand means stocks are very low,” said James Willoughby, an analyst at the International Tin Association (ITA).

The global tin market deficit is expected to rise to 12,700 tonnes in 2022 from 10,200 tonnes this year, the ITA said in June.

Malaysian top producer Malaysia Smelting Corporation (MSC) has been hit by a combination of equipment problems and covid-19 controls which culminated in the smelter declaring force majeure in June.

“It’s a good time, especially for producers,” said a tin trader, adding that the production issue at MSC, the world’s third-biggest refined tin maker, was a major factor this year.

“Prices can go up more based on supply and demand, although a rate hike by the US Federal Reserve will likely suppress the rally.” (With files from Reuters)

Chinas Chengxin, Tsingshan team up for $350 mln Indonesia lithium project

HINA's Shenzhen Chengxin Lithium Group Co Ltd and an affiliate of steel and nickel giant Tsingshan Holding Group will invest in a $350 million Indonesian lithium project to capture demand from the electric vehicle (EV) battery sector.

Tsingshan, which shook up the global nickel market by rapidly increasing production at low cost in Indonesia, is moving into lithium at a time when prices for the commodity are soaring amid booming EV sales in top market China. In a filing, Chengxin said the partners would build a plant to make lithium chemicals in Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park on the island of Sulawesi. The park is home to several Chinese-invested projects including those making nickel and cobalt, which are also used in EV batteries. Chengxin said the plant would produce 50,000 tonnes a year of lithium hydroxide and 10,000 tonnes a year of lithium carbonate, without providing a startup date.

Hydroxide prices in China are up 162.7% year-to-date, while those for carbonate are up 192.6%, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. Chengxin said it would own 65% of the joint venture - called PT ChengTok Lithium Indonesia - and Singapore-incorporated Stellar Investment Pte would hold 35%. A Chengxin investor relations officer on Friday said Stellar is an affiliate of Tsingshan.

Tsingshan did not respond to a request for comment. Indonesia is the world's biggest nickel miner but banned exports of nickel ore from 2020 as it sought to process more resources at home and establish a complete EV battery supply chain. Last week, South Korea's LG Energy Solution and Hyundai Motor Group started construction of a $1.1 billion plant to make EV batteries in Indonesia's West Java province. Chengxin did not say from where the lithium plant would source its raw materials but Daiwa Capital Markets analyst Dennis Ip said in a note that nearby Australia, which mines lithium-rich mineral spodumene, was the most likely option. "It will be interesting to see which Australian miners have spare spodumene resources to be sold to Chengxin," Ip added.

Fuel supply by Coal India to power sector rises 11% in August

UEL supply by state-owned Coal India Ltd to the power sector rose by 11.4 per cent to 38.61 million tonnes last month, official data showed. The development assumes significance in the wake of thermal power plants in the country grappling with coal shortage.

Coal India (CIL) which accounts for 80 per cent of the country's coal output had supplied 34.64 million tonnes (MT) of coal in August last fiscal, according to official data.

Fuel supply by CIL in the April-August period of the current fiscal increased by 27.2 per cent to 205.90 MT over 161.87 MT in the year-ago period, it said.

The supply of coal by Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) in August increased by 73.2 per cent to 4.08 MT over 2.36 MT of coal supplied in August last fiscal, it said.

SCCL supplies to the power sector in the April-August period increased by 84.2 per cent to 22.16 MT from 12.03 MT a year ago.

CIL has been writing to power generating companies since October last year urging them not to regulate the intake of coal and build up stock at their end, so that the electricity production does not suffer during summer and monsoon seasons, according to official sources.

Coal India had earlier said that it had launched a multi-pronged effort to help build up coal stocks at power plants, and stressed that supply to the electricity units carrying stock of zero to six days had been prioritised by preparing a contingency supply plan to increase their stock.

"Launching a multi-pronged effort to help build up stocks at power plants, CIL has offered coal on the 'as is where' basis through the rail-cum-road mode from sources where high stock is available," the company had said.

"Twenty-three such mines carrying 40.3 MT (million tonnes) of stock as of August 16 were identified," CIL had said in a statement.

Supply to the power plants carrying stock of zero to six days has been prioritised by preparing a contingency supply plan to increase their stock, it had said.

In the case of availability issue at linked mines, alternative sources have already been allocated for smooth running of the plant, the company had said.

Vitrinite gets green light for Vulcan coal mine

ITRINITE has received approval for its Vulcan mine complex, paving the way for the development of a $160 million metallurgical coal mine in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.

The lease will unlock the first four years of an expected 15-years-plus mine life, opening the door for more than 150 full-time jobs whilst delivering a major economic boost to the region.

“Having the Vulcan mining lease approved for Vitrinite is a huge milestone for our company,”

Vitrinite founder and managing director Nick Williams said of the approval.

“Going from a greenfield to a producing mine is a huge feat for any company and to do it in the time we’ve done it is an amazing feat and we’re very excited.”

Vitrinite first acquired the nine-million-tonne asset in 2018, quickly accelerating the project into development soon thereafter.

Williams was buoyed by the opportunities that will come of the Vulcan mine.

“The Vitrinite family are looking forward to supplying 150 jobs to the local people,” he said.

“We’re also excited about providing opportunities for local businesses.”

With the sustainability of producing coal always in question, Williams said Vitrinite is conscious of the role it needs to play to maintain the environment.

“We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously. We are adopting world-class, innovative technologies to progressively rehabilitate our pit beyond our statutory requirements.”

Queensland Resources Council (QRC) chief executive Ian Macfarlane echoed Williams’

sentiments, highlighting the environmental considerations at play.

“Queensland is widely regarded as having the strictest environmental regulations in the world, which our industry is fully committed to complying with, along with our determination to lower carbon emissions and implement sustainable mining practices,” Macfarlane said.

“The Vulcan complex mine project is also the first resources project in Queensland to have its progressive rehabilitation and closure plan (PRCP) approved under new legislation introduced in 2019.

“A PRCP commits mine operators to progressively rehabilitating land while the mine is operating and returning the land to its pre-mining use at the end of the project, which in this case is low-intensity cattle grazing.”

ICKEL and its compounds are essential for manufacturing steel, but nickel has also been dubbed ‘the silent saviour’ as it plays a role in the global transition to clean energy as one of the key metals used in batteries for electric vehicles.

Total nickel reserves are estimated at 94 million tonnes globally, according to the US Geological Survey, with Indonesia and Australia among the countries holding the largest endowments.

Global nickel production totalled some 2.2 million tonnes in 2020 despite a global pandemic.

This year, global mine production is expected to grow —GlobalData estimates a 6.8%

increase to nearly 2.5 million tonnes.

Using data provided by sister company Miningintelligence, MINING.COM has compiled a list of the world’s biggest nickel companies based on their production in 2020.

Russia’s Norilsk Nickel (Nornickel) takes the top spot with over 178 kilotonnes (kt) produced, up from 172kts in 2019. Nornickel’s Kola division, which includes five operating mines, is under scrutiny for its environmental footprint, and the company has pledged to invest about

$5 billion over the next decade to clean up lines on the Kola Peninsula.

Brazil’s Vale comes in second place, with 167kt, down from 171kt produced the year prior. PT Vale Indonesia said it aims to start construction at its Pomalaa nickel project next year.

Mining giants in third, fourth and fifth places respectively are Glencore, with assets in Australia, Canada and Europe producing a combined 101kt, down from 108kt in 2019, followed by BHP with 74.8kt from its Nickel West operations in Australia, and Anglo American at 43.6kt from its operations in Brazil.

Australian diversified miner South32’s Colombian nickel operations produced 36.1kts, down 11% from the prior year, nearly neck and neck with Paris-based Eramet Group, which produced 35.9kts.

Perth-based IGO produced 29.5kts, with Finland’s Terrafame following closely with 28.7kts.

China’s MCC-JJJ Mining, with production based on its 85% ownership of the Ramu mine in Papua New Guinea, rounds out the top ten, trailing only a point behind Terrafame, with 28.6kts of nickel produced in 2020.

Top 10 largest uranium mining companies in 2020

ITCO ranked the top 10 largest uranium mining companies worldwide based on production data from the World Nuclear Association for 2020.

Kazakhstan’s Kazatomprom is the world’s largest uranium producer. Kazatomprom uses highly efficient and low-cost in-situ recovery mining method. In 2020, the company’s attributable uranium production of 10,736 tU dropped by 19.2% compared to 2019 because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, as mine preparation, repair and renewal operations were suspended for four months in 2020.

French nuclear giant Orano sits second with 4,453 tU produced in 2020, a 23% decline compared to 2019. Orano’s decline in production was due to the COVID-19 related suspensions of mining operations in Kazakhstan and Canada. In addition, in March 2021, the company ceased uranium mining activities at the Akouta (Cominak) mine in Niger as its reserves and resources have been depleted.

Uranium One is third with 4,276 tU produced in 2020. This British Columbia-incorporated, Canadian-resident corporation is controlled by the Russian state nuclear giant Rosatom and owns stakes in a diverse portfolio of assets worldwide, including Kazakhstan, the United States, Tanzania and Namibia. The company’s attributable uranium output decreased by 8%

over 2019 primarily due to lower production in Kazakhstan.

China’s CGN Mining sits fourth. The company produced 3,671 tU in 2020, which is 5% less than in 2019 (3,871 tU).

Uzbekistan’s state-controlled mining company Navoi, one of the world’s largest producers of gold and uranium, produced 3,500 tU in 2020, unchanged from 2019. Navoi uses in-situ recovery mining method to produce uranium at its mines.
