Abstract

Background: Anemia is one of the nutritional problems caused by lack of iron intake were found in daily foods and the disruption of iron absorption by the body. Anemia in nursing mothers will decrease milk production, reduce the quality and quantity of breast milk. This is related to the prolactin and oxytocin hormones, and will affect the fulfillment of the needs of babies aged 0-6 months.
Objective: to determine the relationship of maternal hemoglobin levels with the growth of babies aged 7-12 months who are breastfed exclusively.
Methodology:This design uses descriptive correlative with cross sectional approach. The sample collection were done using the sampling method of purposive. The total sample in this research was 68 respondents. The study is done at the posyandu the working areas of Puskesmas Pancur Batu Kabupaten Deli Serdang 2015. Data analysis used the Exact Fisher.
Results: Based on the results obtained from the 68 respondents that the majority of mothers had higher levels of HB <11 g% as many as 37 people (54.4%). Statistical test results obtained value of p = 0.029 (p <0.05) that stated there was a significant association between hemoglobin levels with the growth of the baby and the obtained value OR = 3.619, which means mothers with Hb> 11 g% have a chance of having a baby 3,619 times with the growth of normal infants than mothers with Hb <11%.
Conclusion and suggestion: The results of the study proved that the hemoglobin concentration of breastfeeding mothers can influence the growth of the babies, because the anemia in nursing mothers will decrease milk production, reduce the quality and quantity of breast milk. So, Expected for health workers in order to improve service prevision of iron tablets in secondary anemia in breasfeeding mothers.
